We don't know why Sydney dislikes Keith so strongly until about three-quarters of the way in, when we learn that Keith raped her older sister.
Now, am I mistaken when I say that Carly should have immediatly told an adult, not just Sydney?
Yes, I GET that their dad adored Keith and probably wouldn't have believed either of them. But couldn't Carly have told her mom, or another Alchemist?
Oh, and Sydney? You should never have promised not to tell in the first place. Rape is a crime. And you should never keep your mouth shut about a crime, especially if it happened to you, a friend, or a family member.
Am I right about all this, or am I horribly wrong because I have as little life experience as Sydney? Please let me know!

Gabby I totally agree!

Sina Same her, the have to tell someone!!

Shweta well u do have to tell someone mabye carly was afraid of her parents....not sure

Sandra Hmm... but Alchemist are a bit of loners.
And if her father liked him so much, even to put his faith in Keiths words instead of both his daughters... Where were they supposed to be telling it to then. And their father does hold a lot of power with the high ranking alchemists...

I can see the dilemma. And if you happen to come across some one who can fix it why not...
I bet though, seeing Abe isn't all that bad (lol) if he knew the true reason why she had requested it, he would have done something a lot worse.

But I'm not arguing the fact that either of the girls should have told some one. I'm telling my daughter the same thing, no matter how you are threatened you have to tell someone...

What bugs me now is that I haven't even thought of it that way and I've read the book about 5 times already lol.

You make a valid point!

S.L.J. She went for vigilante justice. It didn't end up too well for since Abe had her by the short and curly's afterwards but still. Keith got what he deserved.

Besides, Sydney is not exactly John MacClane. She does things slightly differently.

Okay I will just say that unless you're in the situation you will never truly know what you would do. I know that my older sister had sex with one of my dads' employees and made me swear not to tell anybody. It wasn't rape, but it was inappropriate since it happened at the work place. I was scared to tell, because my sister trusted me. My parents found out and my sister blamed me. Some situations suck and we can only do the best we can. If I was in Sydney's situation I don't know what I would have done.

Racheal Renwick It's fiction, and when you're writing, you have to ask yourself: "What can make this worse?" Without constant pitfalls, a story would be bland and never be read. If they would have told someone, there wouldn't be Keith, no hate for him, no obstacle for Syndey to have to overcome, and no bad guy in the end.

There are so many things that make you go crazy in books, wondering why the MC would do these stupid things, but we all do things like this to some extent. Without the mistakes, there is no story.

Mikaela I think if you don't understand why she didn't tell anyone then you don't understand Sydney or alchemists

Lauraleigh I get how hard it is for people not to tell and how much it hurts building up inside you, but the fact that she did tell someone and it was her younger sister isnt fair, even if the adult doesnt believe you its ALWAYS right to tell someone, and then scream at them until they listen, keeping it in is the worst thing you can do, i kept it in for 9 years and it ruined my life and sent me off the rails so long story short always tell someone no matter what dont carry it alone and make damn sure you are NEVER near the person alone again and if you are kick the SHIT out of them.

Ifrah I can understand why she wouldn't tell anyone and I also understand why Carly would confide in Sydney rather than her parents or an adult. I feel like if I were to go through something really traumatic because of someone I knew and cared about I would have an easier time telling my friend or sibling who I'm really close with than telling a parent about it. Especially if the parents are really fond of the person who caused this traumatic event.

I agree with this. The OP is right that Carly and Sydney SHOULD have told an adult they trusted to prevent him from hurting other girls, but that's a lot easier said than done when the rapist is someone your parents love almost more than you.

Society also does so much victim blaming in rape cases that Carly was also probably terrified that she would be the one in trouble if she called Keith a rapist. He was so well liked by her father and the alchemists that they may have not even believed her.

BookHeroin True i agree but Keith IS THE golden boy in Alchemist community ,Sydney and her sister were scared for different reasons first her sister is a rape victim, everyone is brave about this until they are raped, usually raped victim are always scared ALWAYS,and Syd was scared because like i said earlier he is the golden boy and everyone adored him including her dad ,and if Keith said they are liars then they are liars no one would have believed them . ever. not to mention his dad who work in high places and lets not forget that if Keith has said that syd is a vamp lover they will look her away in that Rehabilitation Institution she was so afraid of . so no that made total sense to me and what he got at the end is so worth it if was even better than cutting the ass dick making him all go old nuts is good punishment for me. Don't get me wrong though Rape victims should always ALWAYS tell someone as soon as the crime happens but it all depends on the support system ...

Shreya I really understand the points that you guys are all making. I agree with them. Sydney SHOULD have told somebody. And I'm making a point that she did. She told Abe, Rose's father and got revenge on Keith. He lost an eye. Now, I honestly think that this wasn't enough. She should have had him be subjected to stronger punishment.

the Rehabilitation Institution is the stronger punishment it's what every Alchemist is afraid of and he went there i think it was even better that killing him

Yeah, I was happy when he did and then when Sydney saw him after that, she started to feel bad for him. THAT pissed me off especially after all he's done not only to Carly but he also tried to hand the gang in Palm Springs to the Strigoi. Everything's he's ever done has been unforgivable and I wish his character was just killed off. You know what I mean?

BookHeroin Shreya wrote: "Haya wrote: "Shreya wrote: "I really understand the points that you guys are all making. I agree with them. Sydney SHOULD have told somebody. And I'm making a point that she did. She told Abe, ..."

YES it's exactly how i feel, but i think we'll see more of him i haven't read The Indigo Spell yet so i don't know what happened after that.

I finished The Indigo Spell yesterday. Keith isn't in the book at all.
