George R.R. Martin Discussion
I suppose in Ned's defence, I have to say that he didn't much involve himself in politics. He fought for Robert when he was much younger and proved himself to be a competent soldier, but then he went back to the North and settled down there. The people in Kings Landing want little to do with the North so Ned was pretty much left alone (he hadn't seen Robert for years, until he visited Winterfell.) I get the impression that the people in the North respect Winterfell and they don't seem to play the games that go on in Kings Landing. They're more concerned with survival up there. So, I think Ned's political savvy was enough to keep on top of things up North, but he was completely out his depth in the South. And his single biggest mistake was to assume that the southerners would be honourable like the Northmen.
I have to agree with that, Lannister. Ned isn't a political sort because that's just not what the Starks have had to do. It's why he didn't even want to go to Kings Landing in the first place. Cat talked him into doing it.

Help! (view spoiler)
Abt Ned - I kinda agree. In that sense, the North does not have time for politics. (view spoiler) Plus they do have honor. I guess you need to have your word be given value if you are to survive the winter. After all, I assume they all may have to end up depending on one another to survive winter so backstabbing is kind of out of the question. No trust just might mean death by starvation.
I was thinking about this... And also, Ned wasn't really groomed for this life was he? It was supposed to be his brother who died and then it became Ned. But I still think he could have been brighter. Maybe I'll find out more as I read on.
@Zeenat - You do find out more. And Ned was not groomed. His brother was the heir, but the Mad King happened. @Lannister - (view spoiler)
I finished a Game of Thrones (4/5 stars). I didn't really write a review, but here are the thoughts I wrote out:** World building, excellent. I was surprised actually by the supernatural elements that were in there--more than I expected (since I expected only dragons). I really want to see what's on the other side of the wall.
** The characters are rich and complex. As are their relationships.
** The middle was slow. I wanted to skip ahead during many of those Ned chapters.
** The end, superb. I got chills reading Dany's last couple of chapter. That 14 year old girl is something to be admired. She's the only one with the brain's and guts to be a leader.
** Shakespearean feeling. Cersei = Lady Macbeth. Probably why I hated her as much as I liked her.
My favorite quote: "What is honor compared to a woman’s love? What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms … or the memory of a brother’s smile? Wind and words. Wind and words. We are only human, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy."
Maggie, there's a good article on Tower of the Hand about all this stuff ...http://towerofthehand.com/blog/2010/0...
For the people who have finished Dance, there's a new teaser chapter from Winds of Winter up on GRRM's website.http://www.georgerrmartin.com/if-samp...
If you only knew how funny that really is to me.... It's a long story... Waaaah too personal.... But yes you " Rick" like all get out Lannister babe!
Maggie (view spoiler)Finally, if you've never much looked at Tower of the Hand, you should def check out some of their articles. They publish excellent essays every so often that are really worth reading.

Yeah, that's him.
I'm about 200 pages into book 3 and for the life of me I still can't see Jaimee Lannister's appeal. Without giving away future plot lines is our Lannister alone in this kingly devotion?
LOL, I can't speak for anyone else, but I think many people start to see Jaime differently from their initial impressions, and that's the big appeal. They don't worship him (yeah, that's probably just me!) but they go from hating him to empathising with him, and that's a huge change of sentiment from how they might have felt early on.It's that old saying about not judging someone till you've walked a mile in their shoes. That really applies to Jaime, and I think it's the u-turn of opinion that most appealing.
I loved him from that scene with Catelyn in Clash of Kings (view spoiler)
But don't feel bad if you still hate him by the end of Feast. Some character work for you, some don't. :)
@Anna - I really like Jaime. I started out liking to dislike him. I never really could get to hate. But as Lannister says, don't judge when you don't know, really applies to the Kingslayer. Once you get to see his side of the story, you empathize with him. You also finally get to see a better picture of a lot of people. Jaime is observant and he has an awesome memory. But Jaime, he makes you understand his point. Once he does that, you can never unsee it. I actually like him more than Tyrion right now. GRRM is awesome for the way he's developed his characters.
I dislike a lot of what jamie has done (in the first book as that is as far as I have gotten). but I can't bring myself to hate him either. He's GRRM's version of Macbeth :) and it fits cause Cersei is Lady Macbeth. LOL
Which number is Clash of Kings?Ok so I'll hold my breath a bit longer for Jaimee. I do agree GRRMartin is very good at setting up a point of view then challenging your perception of things.

That scene with Cersei was so stupid I had no words. But trust me, that was not the worst.
