The Rise of Nine
question
Most hated character: Sarah (but why?)

So I know most people have latched on to Sarah as the problem, so am I the only one who dislikes John? Frankly I think he's the real problem. I mean its easy to hate Sarah. Yeah she's clingy and annoying and demands he stay with her to make her social life better. She is however human and has no experience with or obligation to another planet. John knows better. My question is, who keeps going back to her? Who whines and pines and gets his Cepan killed over staying with her? Who ditches Six and Sam to meet Sarah while they are trying to rescue HIS chest and overrun by Mogs? He threw a tantrum for that chest, then left his friends to die trying to get it for him. Im sure he would have been real sorry afterward, just like he was for Henri. BUT Sarahs not mind controlling him. So who is the one we really dont like?
For the record he also whines a LOT. And makes really really stupid decisions. He also tries to drag other Garde members down with him. First Six and then Nine when he tried to guilt them into going in the Mog mt to try to fix what he screwed up when he met Sarah instead of helping get it back. Sam was only captured because they went to try to get the chest back. Again. After John ditched them in their first effort for Sarah. Who got Sam captured? John. Then he has the nerve to try to force Nine to go back in for Sam by playing a guilt trip about Sams dad? If he cared so much, he wouldn't have been willing to trade Sams safety for his chest. Some have said Sarahs selfish but John takes it to a whole new level. John is plenty old enough to actually think before doing all these very stupid things, but does he? Hes not even really loyal, just selfish, and only brave when he can make someone go with him. He is so low on my character totem pole he is underground at this point.
So anyway the point of my rant is...he gets my vote. If you have a better argument for Sarah I would love to hear it. Mostly all I get is....because she exists. :)

Come to think about it, you're quite right. I think four is very self centered. I don't have a problem with Sarah at all. I think she was just in love with John and she was just missing him and wanted to be with him.

I'm not sure why I hated Sarah so much in Rise of Nine. I mean in I Am Number Four I really liked her. It must be because of Six.
Kenneth Manangan
Me too. I can't see 4 and 6 together as husband and wife. The most I can see them is Guy and Girl BFFs. I think most people tend to hate her because o
...more
I think both Sarah and Sam are good people but they have a really bad influence on number Four (Sarah alot more then Sam). I finding my self wish that he never meet them. Sarah mentioned in the first book that she didn't like the person she was when she was together with Mark. I don't like the person Four is because his affections to Sarah and Sam. Having them out of his life for a while and have him spend time with number Nine have had a really good impact on him, and Four's friendship with Six have help too. So I don't see Four as the problem but his relationship with Sarah (and to some extent his friendship with Sam), or more his affections to Sarah as the main problem. Four started doing stupid things the moment he meet Sarah. And after that it just went downhill. You see similar problems between One and Wade or Nine and Mandy. The way One started acting because of her affections to Wade led to her death. And the way Nine started acting because of his affections to Mandy got him capture. Do you see pattern? And no I don't see love as the problem because the right person brings out the best in you. The problem is that they are not with the right person. So I do wish that the author would break up Sarah and Four for good in the next book. I prefer Sarah dead than this destruktiv relationship to continue.
maybe the author thought putting six as one of 4's loves would make people wonder and keep reading. yes in I am Number Four, I really liked Sarah. she seemed strong and now she i kind of pulling 4 away from the importance of defeating setraku ra and saving his planet from extinction. Sarah is holding him back from what he was sent to do. But on the other hand i don't think six would be that interested in 4 because she knows 4 is for Sarah and 4 would chose Sarah over 6. I think that from the other hand 4 was tired of running and needed to have a social life and wanted to have a human girlfriend to feel normal. I still think that Sarah is pulling 4 a little.
The main reason that everyone hates Sarah is.... Wait for it... Wait for it....
"Six is soooooo much better", "Six is so cool", "Six is tough!", "She's bad***"...
That's basically it. Sarah has done nothing do deserve the hate. She didn't betray John as everyone believed (not me, I thought it was pretty obvious that the author was setting the readers up to pull the rug out from under them)
If she had actually betrayed John, then I might be able to understand it, but she didn't, so I don't, lol.
People are grasping at straws, and using any excuse that they can think of in order to feel justified in their hate for her.

For me, I think people don't like Sarah because:
1.her 'perfectiness' (I know it's not a word.) she's....PERFECT...nothing sad/bad/tough happened to her....absolutely nothing.
2. The thought that she MIGHT'VE actually called the police. Who knows? Maybe she said she was innocent only because she didn't want to deal with a heart-broken, sad and very pissed-off alien.
3.I...just didn't like her from the start...(OUCH! Sorry Sarah lovers. At least I didn't say the hurtful word 'Hate' yeah?)
4.She reminds me of typical Blonds in movies and chick flicks
Trust me....the whole "I despise Sarah" thing has NOTHING to do with Six

My dislike for Sarah is kind of a small point but ... I think her presence creates too much forced drama. I think I get the point of her role, that she's the one tying Four to Earth and giving him hope or whatever, but the FBI storyline? Her being captured and sent to Mexico? I don't see the relevance. She detracts from what the Loriens are trying to do, and makes Four sound, as you said, like a self-centred asshole. Without her, he sounds pretty reasonable, using Henri's advice to reason with Nine and Six. He's meant to be the balance for their impulsive natures, the one who thinks things through, and Sarah's meant to be his one flaw or something. It makes Four seem really OOC to still be banging on about her. By all means, keep Sarah on John's mind and have them get together when the battle is won, but don't keep dragging her back in every book, FFS.
