I do think it is an exaggeration to blame Four for Sam's being captured. Nobody forced Sam to go to the cave. He chose to go there and he was aware of the risks. They got separated because Sam run of to look for his father. It didn't matter how many times Four told him they have no time or means for a rescuing operation. Sam had made up his mind, he was not leaving the cave without his father, nothing Four could have said or done would have changed Sam's mind. Sam put everyone in danger and for what? They have never got confirmation if Sam's dad is still alive, or if he really was captured by the mog or even if he was in the cave. That didn't stop Sam from running of to search for his father in the middle of the Mog's headquarter while the Mogs was regrouping. Not to mention that Sam lost Four's chest to the Mogs to begin with.
Jessica, I guess I blame John because they could have gotten the chest back in the woods if he hadn't decided to go visit Sarah while Six and Sam were almost killed in the woods. They also wanted to find the others but John insisted they go back to that town. They also asked him to leave his chest and he literally threw a tantrum and said he wouldn't leave without it, disregarding their safety in favor of an object. Valuable, but still an object. The chest wasn't even urgent since they didn't know how to use most of it. Sam also supported whatever haphazard plan John came up with. EVEN when it made so little sense that Six would walk away rather than follow. Sam based that decision on blind emotion yes, but thats what John acts on for the entire series so far. Maybe thats why I have a hard time holding Sam's one bad choice against him. John just frustrates me. Why on earth is he so sure he is the key garde that can take on the king of the Mogs? I liked Henri, he was realistic, and maybe its just me but I feel almost like John has a death wish. He repeatedly charges into the worst case situations when he has other options. I guess it depends how vital you believe it was that he have his chest at all times.
I REALLY like your point about Sarahs comment early on, about the way she didn't like who she was when she was with her bf. Maybe thats the point the author is trying to make, that John can't accept the fact that the right person wouldn't make him stupid. Or as stupid anyway. I think my favorite part was when Six tells John that the "Lorien One Love for Life" thing was romantic belief on Henri's part. I expected that to settle this mess with Sarah actually, since that was his main excuse for his deteriorating thinking and behavior since he met her.
