May I ask a crazy question?! Was Austen really portraying Darcy as a shy person? It's been a long time since I read the book, but I can't remember where it said or implied he was shy. It may be there, I just can't remember. The only line I remember is where he says, I'm not comfortable enough in company to easily converse (major paraphrasing when he was talking to Lizzy & Colonel Fitzwilliam). But to me that doesn't necessarily mean you're shy. I don't do small talk very well either, but I don't think anyone would call me shy.Sorry if this question doesn't belong under this topic, I just had to ask for others opinions. I know fanfiction likes to portray Darcy as shy, but I just don't remember thinking that of him when I read the book.
Matthew was the Mr Darcy I imagined(: Colin did a great job too, but I got to admit Matthew was my favorite

I agree with you in that I think his pride is far more prominent and implied in PRIDE and prejudice but I definitely believe the shyness is there :)

I agree with Soph & Caro. He was extremely proud, but also shy (which mostly came across as arrogance).

No competition - COLIN FIRTH. Remember having to make sure I was at home on a Sunday night for the BBC version to record it on a tape - would watch it, rewind it and watch it again and probably watch it AGAIN before the next Sunday ... my husband was actually a little worried about me I was so addicted to it. And when he walked out of that pond .....SWOOOON. OK, its been a few years, maybe I need to watch it again. And Colin is still HOT, so many years later.
FIRTH!!! Absolutely!! He's my man! And the wet white shirt moment *sigh* I agree with everything you said, Mo :)

Showing my age now but I could not wait for Sunday to come around - we all have digital tv and Apple Tv etc. so really there is no waiting around for stuff to watch on TV .... and we had no Goodreads where we could rant and rave about Mr Darcy's wet shirt. Yes, I think it is due another look. Have the DVD now but still have the cassette tape somewhere...

And Darcy is certainly Colin Firth. In addition to other Darcy qualifications, he's got the voice. :) I can't bear to watch 2005 movie, since I watched the 1995 one. Although the reason of it might also be Keira Knightley, I'm not sure, but this is the fact. Colin Firth is Darcy, and Darcy is Colin Firth. :))

I agree too Elif. The trouble with the 2005 version is that it's so different to the book, it changes some of the characters (e.g. Lizzie not telling Jane that Darcy proposed the first time - what were they thinking? I can't fathom why they changed it!)As a period drama fan, it's a nice movie but as a P&P/JA fan, it just annoys me...

Remastered version - mmmm, maybe I should re-write my letter to Santa.
Last year I bought the remastered blu-ray of the 1995 P&P and the quality is MUCH better.

I agree about Lizzie not telling Jane! She should have shared more! It wouldn't have taken much longer in the film! That was one thing I couldn't abide!
