From what I've read, this is due to invisible formatting in Word. If you transfer the book to a .txt file then back to word, it removes all formatting and should resolve this issue.

Yeah, that works great. I've also heard that Sigil works great, too.

Sigil? I'll have to look into that.

It's all self published to me, until I see quality improve. "

YES. i'm not really going to dig into whether a "publisher" is in fact a legit, independent (not big-5), actual publisher purchasing someone's work to publish, or if it's just one author's vanity imprint. i don't need to do that kind of work to figure out my price breaks. the sad fact is that plenty of indie/vanity publishing way underutilizes proofreaders (as others here have mentioned), and so they all get lumped together in my head. i'm not shelling out more than 99 cents for the first book i've read by an author that's outside of traditional publishing. i'm rather fond of a general absence of obvious typos.

Try this site, too: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/foru...

They have great user guides and help here.

I will if I've been recommended by someone I trust. So, if an author friend tells me she just read this book and it was fantastic (the person I'm thinking of is also a copyeditor/proofreader), I will assume it has the quality I'm looking for. Otherwise, I'm always hesitant.

Me, too. I used to read a lot of SPA work. Until the sheer numbers of SPAs started making it harder and harder to find a good book.

But I'll pick one up based on reviews from people I know in a heartbeat.

My next SPA reads are:

The Madness of Hallen
Elegy

I have high hopes for both of them.

Ken Magee It took me a few moments to work out what a SPA was... I'm slow tonight.

Earlier in this thread, I mentioned a poll which ranked the reasons why people buy books... 'Recommendations' came #4 in US and #3 in UK. I think MrsJoseph reinforces that ranking. A recommendation (or, to a lesser extent, review) by someone we know and respect is very hard to beat.

Sometimes. I use Scrivener and Open Office, though. Anyway, I found out ways around the issues I had.
