We are looking for nominations for books set in a
Specific City. You need nominate a book, tell us which city it is set in (has to be a real city) and why you choose it.

For example here is my nominations;

The Shadow of the Wind (set in Barcelona) and the reason I nominate this book is because this is an amazing book about being obsessed with this book. Also this book covers so many different genre styles there is something in it for everything

Lisa (leeees) Forever- set in New York City is one of my favorite books. Historical fiction- it takes you through 1740's New York through the 2001 with all the changes that occur. I read it several years ago but it's still at the top of my list when recommending a read to a friend.

New York: The Novel- I haven't read it yet to say why I choose this one except that I have heard good things about it and I have it on my shelf to read still. He also has London: The Novel

One nomination per person, so pick one

EDIT: I think you did nominate one there, my bad

M.L. | 309 comments In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, set in Berlin. Reason would be the developing eye of the storm.

Really need some more nominations, we only have three

message 7: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) | 289 comments I nominate A Confederacy of Dunces.
It's set in New Orleans and really is more about the people and the city and the mentality there. It has one of the most annoying characters I ever encountered, but somehow you still can't put it down. It has very funny parts and very difficult parts, but over all, it's really worth it.
This is one of the love-it-or-hate-it books, so I don't blame people if they don't like it.

message 8: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) How about Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood? It is (obviously ;) set in Berlin, during the rise of the Nazis in the 1930's, and is said to be semiautobiographical. I have not actually read it yet, but it has come highly recommended and was apparently listed among Time Magazine's 100 best American novels of the 20's century.
The book was also the inspiration (or at least part of the book) for the film Cabaret (1972) for which Liza Minnelli won an Academy Award, playing Sally.

Thanks, they both sound like good reads

message 10: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) I second New York the Novel.

message 11: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I'll nominate Roma: The Novel of Ancient Rome by Steven Saylor. It's about the first 1000 years of Romes history and I think it looks to be a really good book.

I have searched for a nomination that could rival the brilliance of
The Shadow of the Wind, but I cannot find one.

EDIT: I stand by my earlier statement, but to offer another option, I nominate Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It reads like literary crime fiction, but it's a true story, and the city and citizens of Savannah are the stars of the book.

Sounds interesting. I think I'd like to try that one.

Dawn (caveatlector) I think it should be interesting but I'll be torn between voting for Roma or In the Garden of Beasts.
