You're right about that, except in Jem's case. I think Cassie clearly pointed out in the TID books that he's the only Carstairs left. So when she started making TDA, fans went crazy because the leading lady is a Carstairs. I sure hope Jem doesn't die.
Now about Gideon and Sophie. I think they are the ancestors of Alec. But my reason is kinda dense. I mean just because Alec's middle name is Gideon, doesn't mean he's a direct descendant of Gideon. Hahaha! :D
The lack of Branwells in TMI also made me think that Charlotte (and her family) would die in TID. But the Shadowhunter world is big (just like the Wizarding world in Harry Potter) so we can't and should not expect Cassie to keep using the same last names in all her books. (She didn't use Morgenstern in TID, but it doesn't mean that the family name wasn't used then. :D)
I think she just constantly uses Herondale, Lightwood and Carstairs because these are the last names of all her important characters. (Plus! It gives the fans the excitement, and annoyance, of correlating the three series!)

Remember that at this time Ascensions were still allowed, so if she got engaged to him she could be made a Shadowhunter.

That is a very good point.

Actually, Will doesn't have to have children for there to be Jace. There is still his sister Cecily.

But if Cecily had kids, then she would be married, and her last name would be changed.

Jem has an uncle, who also bears Carstairs' name. Emma doesn't have to be Jem's direct descendant. And Jem has been long dying, it is unlikely that he will produce an offspring. Unless there is some strong magic for that purpose...
Jace can only be Will's direct descendant. When Cecily gets married, she will bear her husband's name, as her children do. Even if Cecily is to have a child without being married, the bastards in Victorian era are usually raised under their father's wing and bear their father's name.

That's modern life. Will lived in Victorian era. Women with kids hardly raised their children. The bastards would be raised under their father's house, or by the mother's family, not by the mother herself.

I completely agree with you about Jem and Tessa possibly adopt a male shadowhunter. As everyone was pointing out, a woman would change her last name unless she decides to keep it like Jocelyn did.
I also have a theory about the Carstairs/Herondale family but I do not take it to heart:
I know it was a huge scandal back in Victorian times if a woman had children with two different guys at the same time. But I'm not sure if Tessa would even allow it because she was raised like a lady. If Tessa had a child with Will, that could explain why Clary recognized Tessa at the end CoG.
The other thing is if it's possible that Tessa's blood could save Jem. I know that she's an unique type of warlock but that does not mean her blood might be useless. Since Tessa is a shapeshifter, could she become a complete human or shadowhunter in order to have children?
I don't remember reading/hearing that Jem had an uncle. Can someone tell me where in the books it says that or if Cassie posted something on tumblr.

exactly. the jem/tessa having a baby seems silly to me because seeing the circumstances it isnt possible. Also i am pretty sure jace is will's descendant and if jem does end up with tessa, will can always have a kid even though he isnt in love with the girl he has the kid with.

You must really be paying attention to detail because I never would've picked up on all of that without really thinking about it, also I agree it would be sad if Tessa doesn't end up with Will

I read the Infernal Devices, and have now just finished City of Fallen Angels, and I think I found some clues as to what happens in Clockwork Princess.
#1: It is mentioned in City of Ashes, that the Herondales manage the London Institute.
That means that the Branwells do not manage it anymore, and maybe at the end of Clockwork Princess, Will does something to have the rights of managing it. Whether that means something happens to the Branwells, I have no idea, but there is no mention of that last name in the Mortal Instruments. But why Will and not Jem??? Does something happen to him? I hope not.
#2: Will has to have children or else there would be no Jace. And (as sad as I am to say this)there is a chance that Tessa cannot have children, which means they might not end up together. They just as well could, but maybe Tessa doesn't end up with Will?? (If that happens I will be so sad).
#3: Gideon and Sophie might get married. I doubt Gabriel will, since he doesn't seem to care for anyone except himself, but a Lightwood brother hasto have children in order for there to be Isabelle and Alec.
#4: Jem has to have children. In order for there to be an Emma Carstairs, Jem has to have children. If both Jem and Will have children, then they can't be Brother Zacharia.
Okay, these are all sorts of conspiracy theories, but all of these facts jumped out at me when I was reading the Mortal Instruments. Please comment and tell me what YOU think will happen in Clockwork Princess!
