Robert Wright (rhwright) | 30 comments Can't seem to find much on this, but if I am making original scans from book-in-hand, what are the file preferences for what we upload?

• JPEG or GIF?
• what DPI?
• what image dimensions?
• overall file size limit?

As I start scanning in some of these, my particular side ones to have them be as optimal as possible. I'm sure goodreads will accept a range of files, but given a choice what is most preferred?

Banjomike | 5166 comments Most of the time Goodreads will resample your uploaded covers ANYWAY so whatever you start with will be altered even if you send it at the correct dpi & dimensions.

This cover of mine was resampled down to a JPG compression level of 81. 81! Who uses 81? Good demo of compression artifacts.

Keep a copy of the old covers that you are replacing.
Just try a few, see what happens.
Don't use GIF.

Robert Wright (rhwright) | 30 comments Thanks, banjomike!

It's less replacing covers as creating ones that aren't there. For a few it's a matter of alternate covers, which I've read up on the when/how of that.

GR resampling engine has certainly done a number on quite a few of my scans over the last few months as well. They start out looking lovely and end up on the book page looking jagged and artefact ridden.
