Book synopsis:
Cassia faces the ultimate choices in the long-anticipated conclusion to the "New York Times" bestselling Matched Trilogy
After leaving Society and desperately searching for the Rising--and each other--Cassia and Ky have found what they were looking for, but at the cost of losing each other yet again: Cassia has been assigned to work for the Rising from within Society, while Ky has been stationed outside its borders. But nothing is as predicted, and all too soon the veil lifts and things shift once again.
In this gripping conclusion to the #1 "New York Times" bestselling Matched Trilogy, Cassia will reconcile the difficulties of challenging a life too confining, seeking a freedom she never dreamed possible, and honoring a love she cannot live without.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 1 - 4

1) What were your thoughts of The Story of the Pilot written at the front of the book? I believe this is the first time we see all that information put together.

2) Were you surprised that Xander was an Official? I don't recall, but I guess I might have forgotten, them saying he was one in Crossed. He has to act all proud of the uniform.

3) What do you think of the Rising's plan to release then cure the Plague? Will they be selective in who they cure? Is Cassia immune? Will they let those in charge of the society succumb to the Plague's fate?

4) What did you think of Cassia doing sorting for the Match banquet? Could a member of the Rising have tinkered with her Matching pool? Could that be how Ky's name got included?

5) Do you think Cassia's explanation of what happened to her was plausible?

6) What did you think of the three different person perspectives in the book? It could have been done differently, but I kind of like knowing what's happening with each of the main characters.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 5 - 8

7) So Cassia might not be immune. Are there people in Central administering the cure?

8) What did you make of Cassia's papers (stories and poems) being stolen?

9) So did Society cause the plague or is that the cover the Rising is using to make themselves out to be the heroes? Did we just assume it was the Rising who unleashed the plague? The water Cassia saw makes me think the Plague was released by the Rising. What do you think? Sounds like you join or die. Not a great way to recruit people.

10) So the enemy has been killed and Society was sending aberrations and anomalies to the outer provinces as a means of cleansing the race and as a means of punishment?

11) Do you think the archivist Cassia dealt with is part of the Rising? She seemed awful calm about the plague. "People die until there is a cure."

12) Do you trust the Pilot?

Questions and Comments for Chapters 9 - 13

13) Should Xander have vouched for Lei? Will it come back to haunt him later?

14) What do you think of Xander wanting Cassia to choose him? i feel so bad for him. I keep wondering if he'd known he had competition for her would he have done anything differently? I think he had the advantage at first. Could he have kept it had he known?

15) What did you think of Cassia's advice to the woman to sing to the boy who couldn't sleep? Did you like her lyrics?

16) It sounds like traveling is being limited between the cities. Does this seem logical to you so they can keep control of everyone and the plague spreading or does it seem odd?

17) So the Rising is still using Cassia's sorting skills. What in the world is she sorting?

18) Cassia needs to earn her way out of Central. Does that seem odd since she's been a part of the rising even before the Plague went full force?

19) Who do you think made the E? Cassia made an E earlier in the book. It couldn't be the same one could it?

20) What did you make of Connor and his insulting Indie because she said he didn't have what it takes to become the pilot? Will he cause problems later?

21) If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go? Indie says she'd go to some place she hasn't been before. Ky says he'd go to wherever Cassia is.

22) Ky misses Cassia. Do you think he'll do something desperate to get to her?

23) I'm having a little problem figuring out how much time is passing within the book. Is anyone else feeling the same?

24) What do you think Cassia would have said after the but? That she loved Ky or something else?

25) Do you think Indie still has a crush on Xander?

26) What do you think happened with Patrick and his son. Why would he ask, "Why did I do it?" What really happened?

27) Sounds like Cassia is going to start up a new type of trading. What do you think of it? Will the rising approve? Do you think her Grandfather would have like the idea?

Okay not too many questions today.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 14 - 18

28) As Logan stated diseases are hard to control and we now see that the Plague is mutating. Could this be the wrench that causes the Rising to fail? Do you think they'll be able to get a handle on the mutation? Running far, far away is starting to look like the best option.

29) Taly you were right about Indie making a move on Ky. He's probably the only one who gets her. I'm not liking Indie at the moment. Anyone else?

30) The Archivist tried to find out if Cassia had any of the DNA tubes. We also find out how Xander got the blue tablets--by helping to take blood samples. Even though no one has found away to bring back those lost people are still holding on to the possibility. Do you find this strange or do you mark it up to people just being people and there will always be those seeking out immortality or a way to bring back loved ones?

31) What to you think the Otherlands are? Could it be where the enemy once lived?

32) I find it interesting that that one of the archivist came to the Gallery. Seems like word is spreading.

33) What did you think of the carvings/drawings on the airships?

Questions and Comments for Chapters 1 - 4

1) What were your thoughts of The Story of the Pilot written at the front of the book? I believe this is the first time we see all that information put together.
It reminded me of the opening of the second book with the poems: a way of recounting the previous episode without making some trite summary. It also served as a focuser. Very neat.

2) Were you surprised that Xander was an Official? I don't recall, but I guess I might have forgotten, them saying he was one in Crossed. He has to act all proud of the uniform.
Not much. I expected he'd be a healer from book one, and it looked like they had a high standing society wise. I didn't realize not all healers were officials.

3) What do you think of the Resistance's plan to release then cure the Plague? Will they be selective in who they cure? Is Cassia immune? Will they let those in charge of the society succumb to the Plague's fate?
I was horrified. It's wrong on so many levels. And Xander's yes man attitude, so deluded and brainwashed. Deeply disturbing.

4) What did you think of Cassia doing sorting for the Match banquet? Could a member of the Resistance have tinkered with her Matching pool? Could that be how Ky's name got included?
I though if it happened once, it could have happened any number of times before. Maybe Ky was a trial run before the big thing?
What I found strange about the scene is the almost memory Cassia had. I want to know what that's about

5) Do you think Cassia's explanation of what happened to her was plausible?
Very. And if things are in such a disarray, people might not care much for where some temp worker was misplaced. I though the explanation on foraging was overkill though. From Society's point of view, the thing to do would have been to take a blue pill and stay put.

6) What did you think of the three different person perspectives in the book? It could have been done differently, but I kind of like knowing what's happening with each of the main characters.
What I liked about it was the fact that voices are differentiated. Condie seems to have gotten the hang of it. Last book I kept confounding the characters perspectives once they got together. As an extra inside joke, book 1 has 1 POV, book 2 has 2, book 3 has 3. Cover followed on it too, with the strange E

message 33: by Lisarenee (last edited Nov 20, 2012 05:33PM) (new) - added it

Lisarenee | 7659 comments 1) I liked that too.

2) For some reason I didn't think that, but maybe you're right?

3) I did not like this idea either. I was shocked by it.

4) I'm curious how the Resistance wanted everyone sorted differently. Sounds like she may remember, but perhaps not everything?

5) True. That's a scary point about taking the blue pill.

6)Ha ha. I noticed too that it went from 1 to 2 to 3. lol I don't think the first cover had a strange letter. Funny note about the E, my daughter took the book to school and one of her friends asked what book she was reading because they couldn't figure out the letter was an E. Another friend was jealous that she had it already on the day it came out and wouldn't talk to her about the book. lol

Chelsi | 49 comments 1. I liked it. I also found it similar to the opening of the first book.
2. I thought he would be a medic but I think this field will be helpful for his role in the rising.
3. I don't recall cassia having anything happen that could have made her immune. I hope they don't let some succomb to the disease. That's not a good base for a new society. Maybe they will just wait to revive them when the rising is over so those against it wont be able to interfere.
4. I didn't think of that but maybe she was the trial run. Maybe she had to take the red pill last time she did thus sort of thing which is why it seems vaguely familiar.
5. I think society is probably too preoccupied to really look into what happened al her story was able to work.
6. I think it builds the suspense because you have to rotate through two other POV before you find out about the cliffhanger condie creates
in each chapter. It draws you in and keeps you reading.

3) I was trying to remember if they did anything to her when she first made it to the Resistance's camp? Did she receive a shot before they sent her back into Society?

6) I confess, I read ahead through the next day's reading.

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Comments for Chapters 1 - 4

1) The Story of the Pilot - I loved it! I like when books have some kind of mythology/folklore etc. at the beginning. The meaning becomes richer the more of the blok you read.

2) I was surprised that Xander was an Official, but I suppose it makes sense given his background and seemingly pro-Society attitude.

3) I have a bad feeling about the Resistance, and this biological warfare element kind of seals that thought for me. I keep thinking that this mysterious Pilot is going to turn out just as bad as Society. Who releases a Plague unless they really don't care who lives and who dies? Disease is so hard to control.

4) I hadn't thought of the sorting being part of the glitch with Ky. Or maybe the Resistance came up with this plot after they realized this last minute type of sorting was happening. Maybe Cassia's Match was really just a mistake. Like mentioned above, I was really curious about her memory of doing this before.

5) I also agree about the foraging. That seemed like an unnecessary detail, but how do they explain that she survived if she told them she took her blue pill? Since that's supposed to kill them and all. lol

6) I like knowing what's happening with the characters, but all of their voices sound the same to me. I wish the series had all been in 3rd person.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

@Logan 3) Exactly!

5) Well, two are enough to kill, but one puts them to a deep sleep or coma. They could have concocted it as the official finding her passed out on the woods.

Andrea Diaz (literarygetaway) | 26 comments I'm a day behind! Ahh, I'll catch up tonight. But, here are my answers for Chapters 1-4:

1) What were your thoughts of The Story of the Pilot written at the front of the book? I believe this is the first time we see all that information put together.
When I started reading it, I remembered it from the previous books. I think it was smart to put all that information together right before Part One of the book, which is labeled The Pilot.

2) Were you surprised that Xander was an Official? I don't recall, but I guess I might have forgotten, them saying he was one in Crossed. He has to act all proud of the uniform.
For some reason, I already knew he was an Official. I believe it was stated in Crossed.

3) What do you think of the Resistance's plan to release then cure the Plague? Will they be selective in who they cure? Is Cassia immune? Will they let those in charge of the society succumb to the Plague's fate?
I don't understand where they're going with this plan, honestly. I'm sure they will be choosing certain people to cure. For instance, the higher powers of the Society? I'm sure they won't be chosen. I feel the Cassia is the Pilot, I've believed this since Crossed. So, I'm sure she is immune. Again, I'm sure the higher powers in the Society will fall under the Plague.

4) What did you think of Cassia doing sorting for the Match banquet? Could a member of the Resistance have tinkered with her Matching pool? Could that be how Ky's name got included?
This is exactly what I was thinking! When she was sorting for the Match Banquet, I honestly got nervous. What if it wasn't part of The Rising?

5) Do you think Cassia's explanation of what happened to her was plausible?
Yes, I feel that they gave her enough of an explanation to where if the Society DID in fact question her further, she'd be able to add onto it without it being obvious.

6) What did you think of the three different person perspectives in the book? It could have been done differently, but I kind of like knowing what's happening with each of the main characters.
I love the 3 different perspectives. I agree, knowing what's going on with each character individually is better than constantly wondering or even getting bias information through other characters.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments @Logan

1) I agree. I like a little folklore included in books whether author created or not.

2) I'm glad I wasn't the only one. :)

3) That was what I was thinking to.

4) I actually had to go back and reread about her memory. It slipped my mind. lol Darn do I still have my red pill???? Actually lately a red pill isn't always needed.

5) I don't think she told them she took the blue pill. I think the Resistance replaced it.

6) Interesting thought. I kind of feel the first book needed to be from only Cassia's perspective or we'd get too much information. Plus, I think Condie wanted us to bond with Cassia and that was her way of doing it. I wouldn't mind getting Ky and Xander's perspectives later in a short story.

1) I agree

2) I couldn't remember.

3) We'll have to see, but I'm guessing those in charge will be killed off.

4) On of my theories while reading Crossed was that it was the Resistance's way of getting Ky to participate in the uprising by showing him what he could have.

5) True

6) I agree.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 5 - 8

7) So Cassia might not be immune. Are there people in Central administering the cure?
I reckon there will be. At any rate, she might qualify for one just for being a member.

8) What did you make of Cassia's papers (stories and poems) being stolen?
I wondered if it could be the Head Archivist. Either for the value of the papers themselves, or as a kind of test for Cassia.

9) So did Society cause the plague or is that the cover the Resistance is using to make themselves out to be the heroes? Did we just assume it was the Resistance who unleashed the plague? The water Cassia saw makes me think the Plague was released by the Resistance. What do you think? Sounds like you join or die. Not a great way to recruit people.
The fact that the Resistance was inoculating hand picked people is very, very suspicious. It is plausible that the plague came back form wherever the Society dumped it, but of course, plausibility is part of a convincing lie. From the end of the last book, I've been dreading another Area 13, and I thought we were fast approaching it with Xander's view of it. The way they come with the cure but wait till things are critical...

10) So the enemy has been killed and Society was sending aberrations and anomalies to the outer provinces as a means of cleansing the race and as a means of punishment?
That sounded like a plausible line too. Was it the truth, or a convenient way of stating things for the rising? Ky saw suspicious marks on the bellies of their ships. Who's to say THEY weren't the ones shooting the Aberrations. I don't know. I'm feeling very mistrustful of this "Rising" and all the formulaic guerrilla speeches.

11) Do you think the archivist Cassia dealt with is part of the rising? She seemed awful calm about the plague. "People die until there is a cure."
I think she sounded like a person that knows her history, and is part of an organization that survived societal upheavals. If you think about it, there has always been groups of people like that, that keep knowledge and things through burnings and wars. She was part of a black market while the Society was up, she's part of a black market while the Rising is up, and in "business as usual"

12) Do you trust the Pilot?
Resounding NO. I get the necessity for partitioned information, but I don't trust it. It could go either way, but I like Ky's idea of just flying away and leaving them all to fight for who's king of the hill.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Aside: Anyone else had the philosophical though that The Pilot is each of them, anyone and everyone trying to help correct wrongs? Each time it's talked about, specially in the story, it sounds like a quiet leader by example, not a revolutionary general. Like it being about you becoming a pilot, working little by little, steady.
At least, that's the feel I get. Which is why the whole party thing clashes so much for me.

7) So Cassia might not be immune. Are there people in Central administering the cure?
I'm sure. And I agree with Taly, she'll probably get a cure just for being a member. But, does she need it? She isn't showing symptoms.

8) What did you make of Cassia's papers (stories and poems) being stolen?
Oh, that pissed me off (pardon the language). I feel that someone participating in the Rising had something to do with it. Or, maybe one of the Archivists?

9) So did Society cause the plague or is that the cover the Resistance is using to make themselves out to be the heroes? Did we just assume it was the Resistance who unleashed the plague? The water Cassia saw makes me think the Plague was released by the Resistance. What do you think? Sounds like you join or die. Not a great way to recruit people.
I feel that at the very beginning, years back, the Society did release the Plague to get rid of the enemy. But, the recent mishaps with poisoned water? I have a feeling it was the Rising.

10) So the enemy has been killed and Society was sending aberrations and anomalies to the outer provinces as a means of cleansing the race and as a means of punishment?
I personally think that this part is true, although the Rising is somehow making use of this.

11) Do you think the archivist Cassia dealt with is part of the rising? She seemed awful calm about the plague. "People die until there is a cure."
YES. She's got to be a part of the Rising. I actually hope she is. Maybe even Pilot material?

12) Do you trust the Pilot?
At the moment, I do. But, that can change at any moment.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments @ Taly Okay this is why I love doing buddy reads with you Taly. You spark off questions and remind me of things that I might have otherwise forgot. :)

7) I can't wait to find out.

8) I wondered the same thing. They knew she had asked for the box AND she had followed her around that first time she introduced herself. Also, she said Cassia was too trusting.

9) I agree.

10) What you said brings back the memory of what Ky saw at the end of Crossed. It sounded like the Farmers had been killed by the Rising (okay so now I'm using the right term instead of Resistance. lol). Remember the ship he saw?

11) I don't know. She seemed to know too much.

12) I don't trust him either, but I don't know if running away is a good idea. Is there really any safe place to run to?

I thought that at one time, but am no longer sure. It sounds like there will be a leader or group of leaders. To be as organized as they are I think there has to be a group Leading the whole thing. Maybe that was how it was supposed to be.

7)You guys are probably right.

8) I hope we find out who stole them.

9) Perhaps a rerelease?

10) I wonder how big the rising is? Would they have the resources and people to kill that many people? I have to go with you and say I believe this one was the doing of Society otherwise they would have supplied ammo.

11) Could be.

12) I feel it's hard to trust anyone at this time. There are too many unanswered questions.

7) I'm very curious to see where they go with the Cassia thing. I think there must be some big consequence to come from not being immune to the red pill or the plague. Very interested to see if she gets sick, but she can't get a coma or we'd lose her narration!

8) I like Taly's suggestion that the archivists did it! I want to know who else knew they were there.

9) The Rising is up to no good, and I would be surprised if they didn't have some role in the spreading of the plague. I mean, only giving some immunity because the time wasn't right? Fishy!

10) That's my take on it.

11) I think of her as a neutral party who can operate outside of the power scheme, so she doesn't have to care about who wins or loses.

12) Do you trust the Pilot? NO!!! :)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 9 - 13

Andrea Diaz (literarygetaway) | 26 comments I'm sad to say that I haven't had time to read today, being Thanksgiving in the US and all. I'll have to catch up tonight and post my thoughts tomorrow.
