Questions and Comments for Chapters 9 - 13

13) Should Xander have vouched for Lei? Will it come back to haunt him later?
The way her empathy is portrayed has me wavering from thinking her a beautiful character to thinking she's an extremely skilled manipulator. I like her, and want her to be good.

14) What do you think of Xander wanting Cassia to choose him? i feel so bad for him. I keep wondering if he'd known he had competition for her would he have done anything differently? I think he had the advantage at first. Could he have kept it had he known?
These glimpses into his mind have made him even more awesome and pitiful in a way. He truly loves Cassia. I'd thought he could have been just following his correct ways, but it goes beyond. Amazing. As convinced of his righteousness as he is, he's proving better than his golden boy image.

15) What did you think of Cassia's advice to the woman to sing to the boy who couldn't sleep? Did you like her lyrics?
I loved the last two stanzas. And I liked how she though of it as something to be given, not traded.

16) It sounds like traveling is being limited between the cities. Does this seem logical to you so they can keep control of everyone and the plague spreading or does it seem odd?
It's a very reasonable restriction in case of disease. The thing is, it'll make things strained.

17) So the Rising is still using Cassia's matching skills. What in the world is she matching?
Huh? She's sorting, but matching? Did it say matching? I missed it.

18) Cassia needs to earn her way out of Central. Does that seem odd since she's been a part of the rising even before the Plague went full force?
I reckon while traveling is restricted, even the Risers are staying put. Even pilots seem to have restrictions. Actually, it sounds better to me, thinking that even the taking organization is following their own rules.

19) Who do you think made the E? Cassia made an E earlier in the book. It couldn't be the same one could it?
I didn't have it in mind much. With the rising, and more people trading and walking in the edge, more and more people writing should crop up. It could be significant, or it could be just a sign of people relishing their freedom.

20) What did you make of Connor and his insulting Indie because she said he didn't have what it takes to become the pilot? Will he cause problems later?
If we see him again, he's bound to annoy or trip someone. Ambitious and loud people like that don't bear skilled people well.

21) If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go? Indie says she'd go to some place she hasn't been before. Ky says he'd go to wherever Cassia is.
I'm not much for the "saving the world" thing. I'm for living a good life that makes no harm. I'd leave all those big enterprises to the Xanders and Connors of the world, and take myself out of the equation, far far away.

22) Ky misses Cassia. Do you think he'll do something desperate to get to her?
I think his moment was at the beginning of the book, but that once the plague broke he chose to do right by everyone and be an errand runner as was needed. While the plague holds, he'll stay in duty I think.

23) I'm having a little problem figuring out how much time is passing within the book. Is anyone else feeling the same?
It felt like quite a bit, given the recovery times, and the way the pilots seem used to the runnings. Some weeks at least, between chapter 8 and 12.

24) What do you think Cassia would have said after the but? That she loved Ky or something else?
"but" sounds like, "not like you want me to"

25) Do you think Indie still has a crush on Xander?
She seems more focused on Ky now, doesn't she? Maybe meeting him erased some of the idealization, or maybe she held onto his image because his secret was that he was part of the rising, but now so is Ky, and he's proving to be really good at it, even if reluctant.

26) What do you think happened with Patrick and his son. Why would he ask, "Why did I do it?" What really happened?
Ever since Cassia mentioned an Anomaly on her city center killing the Markham boy, I've wondered what really happened. It seemed to be set up as not-that-simple. I hope we get some answers in this volume given it's been brought back up.

27) Sounds like Cassia is going to start up a new type of trading. What do you think of it? Will the rising approve? Do you think her Grandfather would have like the idea?
I think her grandfather would have loved it, since he gave her two very distinctive options with his poems and told her it was OK to choose. There is freedom in art, not just in the expression, but also in the sharing, and in the fact that it resist an assigned value, and that possession is not necessary for getting the whole experience. I don't think anyone trying to get a good grip on society will approve much. People meeting? talking? sharing? without a method to control it? The horror!.

13) I didn't think it was wise. I don't think he knows her that well.

14) I agree it does make you like Xander more than before. We're finally able to glimpse who he really is.

15) I liked it too and that she gave it as a gift. Such a contrast to what we see with the Archivists.

16) That is true.

17) Oops, my mistake. I meant sorting. I was kind of sleepy last night when I wrote the questions. I'll need to fix that.

18) That's one way of looking at it.

19) I'm thinking its significant, but I have no idea how. Seems like every time I dismiss something as being insignificant we later find that it was.

20) True. I think he'll pop up.

21) I think I'd try to track down my family.

22) We'll see. I'm not so sure.

23) I thought it was just days and then a comment was made when Cassia's letter arrived and I was a little shocked at how much time had passed.

24) That would make sense.

25) I have to say Indie and Ky together makes me nervous. I was thinking last night about the book and wondered why Ky and Indie are always sent on missions together? Connor made it sound like they were the only two who were always paired with someone else. Do they not trust them yet since they just joined or is there another reason?

26) I hope we get answers too.

27)lol I think it's significant. It will get rid of all the 100 restraints. It's like breaking free of what Society dictated.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Okay not too many questions today.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 14 - 18

28) As Logan stated diseases are hard to control and we now see that the Plague is mutating. Could this be the wrench that causes the Rising to fail? Do you think they'll be able to get a handle on the mutation? Running far, far away is starting to look like the best option.

29) Taly you were right about Indie making a move on Ky. He's probably the only one who gets her. I'm not liking Indie at the moment. Anyone else?

30) The Archivist tried to find out if Cassia had any of the DNA tubes. We also find out how Xander got the blue tablets--by helping to take blood samples. Even though no one has found away to bring back those lost people are still holding on to the possibility. Do you find this strange or do you mark it up to people just being people and there will always be those seeking out immortality or a way to bring back loved ones?

31) What to you think the Otherlands are? Could it be where the enemy once lived?

32) I find it interesting that that one of the archivist came to the Gallery. Seems like word is spreading.

33) What did you think of the carvings/drawings on the airships?

Chelsi | 49 comments 7. I agree with everyone. She should be entitled but the cure is a cure not an immunization so she has to get sick first.

8. That is really really unfortunate for her because those were her currency so now she is essentially broke.

9. I think that the plague came back in rain like one of the charecters explained.

10. Yes this seems like some weird sort of genocide.

11. I feel like she could be but I'm not sure yet.

12. No I wont trust him until I'm sure he is good.

34) I don't know about anyone else, but it wasn't until this section that I finally got hooked on the book.

35) So we find out Oria didn't fare that well with the plague. I wonder if Xander's parents are still there?

36) Have you noticed Condie likes to repeat significant facts via more than once and from more than one source? She did it with the vials of DNA and now again with the Otherlands.

37) So it appears the Archivist stole the items Cassia owned. Now we know the Pilot was suspicious of Cassia, do you think it was on his orders so she'd be stranded where she was? So she'd be separated from Xander and Ky?

38) Indie knew the cockpits transmitted everything said to others. I wonder if Ky knew? If he didn't would he have said what he did to Caleb?

39) Indie doesn't have the mark and she was placed in a position where she'd be exposed. Does the Pilot only reveal himself to those who he knows will probably die. First Caleb, will Indie fall victim too???? What about Ky, Xander and Cassia?

40) I wonder why those from the villages are immune? Could it be something in their diet? Could it have something to do with the flowers Cassia listed in the poem with the Queen Anne's Lace?

41) What do you think Cassia's Grandfather was trying to tell her about the Red Garden Day?

42)Were you surprised that Cassia's Grandmother was the first Pilot? I wasn't surprised at all. I kind of wondered.

43) Do you think it strange that the Pilot would distrust the Granddaughter of the first Pilot? Was Cassia's father against the rising?

44) Do you think the Pilot believes them?

45) Anyone else want to ring the neck of the Archivist? I wonder if she could be the double agent here?

46) What do you think Cassia's father was proud of her for doing? Going after Ky or joining the Rising?

My feed didn't tell me these were up! *glares at the page*

The Rising came in with all pomp, announcing themselves saviors, and now can't deliver. You have a bunch of scared people that have always been cosseted and corseted, and suddenly aren't. I worry over the building possibilities of civil unrest and violence.

29) Taly you were right about Indie making a move on Ky. He's probably the only one who gets her. I'm not liking Indie at the moment. Anyone else?
I still like her, with a mix of pity and fear for what she might do, and wonder at her skill. She's so strong but so without something to hold on to. She seems to be taking the Rise as that thing, to became her bones instead of hope, like that quote from Ky said.

Society doesn't have a religion, so the tubes and the hope of bringing people back seems the closest thing people needing one were getting. Xander has his convictions, Cassia and Ky have each other. Other people might need something else to mark their world with hope or give it meaning. At least, that's how I take it.

31) What to you think the Otherlands are? Could it be where the enemy once lived?
The fact that the maps are shrinking has been mentioned, and also the bit where people in Society didn't normally learn that the word is round. I think it sounds like this vast thing it was portrayed to be is just an insular nation. There could be so much more out there.

32) I find it interesting that one of the archivist came to the Gallery. Seems like word is spreading.
Yes, and he came to share too!.

33) What did you think of the carvings/drawings on the airships?
Cargo bay, people in it, drinking the sky. It sounded like freedom. Like a slave marking the ship delivering them.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 19 - 23

34) I don't know about anyone else, but it wasn't until this section that I finally got hooked on the book.
Things are picking up. Interestingly, I was caught almost from the start. Xander's POV and the unfolding of the plague did it. It sounded like a du-dum song in the back of my mind, so I wanted to see it explode :D

35) So we find out Oria didn't fare that well with the plague. I wonder if Xander's parents are still there?
That was a downer. Are the troubles because of the mutation, or did the cures come too tight to some spots?. I'd forgotten Xander's family ought to still be there. And his brother! I wonder what he's doing. Xander seems convinced he has to be part of the Rising, but don't you suspect he might have taken their parent's teachings exactly the other way around?

36) Have you noticed Condie likes to repeat significant facts via more than once and from more than one source? She did it with the vials of DNA and now again with the Otherlands.
In a way, it's neat. Given that all is hear say and rumor, corroborating seem the name of the game.

37) So it appears the Archivist stole the items Cassia owned. Now we know the Pilot was suspicious of Cassia, do you think it was on his orders so she'd be stranded where she was? So she'd be separated from Xander and Ky?
Wow, I hadn't hough about it, but it's very possible

38) Indie knew the cockpits transmitted everything said to others. I wonder if Ky knew? If he didn't would he have said what he did to Caleb?
I think Ky knew. Remember that previous scene where he wants to talk to Indie, and starts looking for a paper to write on?

39) Indie doesn't have the mark and she was placed in a position where she'd be exposed. Does the Pilot only reveal himself to those who he knows will probably die. First Caleb, will Indie fall victim too???? What about Ky, Xander and Cassia?
Reveal himself? Hasn't he done that waaay ago? Or do you mean, show the paddling under the swan? As much as I wanted to punch him, I started liking him a bit more now that I know he is human and cares. The tubes thing though dashed any possibility of true trust. And he's paranoid and scared. Dangerous mix.

40) I wonder why those from the villages are immune? Could it be something in their diet? Could it have something to do with the flowers Cassia listed in the poem with the Queen Anne's Lace?
*blink* Huh.... Wouldn't that be a perfect fit?. They said new arrivals are immune too, so it might not be DNA, but an actual external variable.

41) What do you think Cassia's Grandfather was trying to tell her about the Red Garden Day?
I so want to know!, lol

42)Were you surprised that Cassia's Grandmother was the first Pilot? I wasn't surprised at all. I kind of wondered.
Not a lot. I'd assumed she'd been part of the rising, it was a skip and a beat to make her the Pilot.

43) Do you think it strange that the Pilot would distrust the Granddaughter of the first Pilot? Was Cassia's father against the rising?
I don't think he ought to trust her just on her genealogy. There is the bit about a fight between her father and grandfather. Given how much her grandfather seems to appreciate choosing your own way, I can see it being about becoming an official and staying true to Society, and loving him for it.

44) Do you think the Pilot believes them?
I think he has little to loose, and doesn't really care right now one way or the other. If they lie, Ky dies. If they find the cure the Pilot has what he needs, and whether they are for or against the Rising can be dealt with later.

45) Anyone else want to ring the neck of the Archivist? I wonder if she could be the double agent here?
Yes! I was so disappointed. I thought she was above getting herself mixed in politics. Even after the deft I would have liked her, because it's a personal weakness, but having her working for the Pilot ruined her character for me. I liked her image of a free agent for preserving culture.

46) What do you think Cassia's father was proud of her for doing? Going after Ky or joining the Rising?
I'd assumed it was going after Ky, but now that you pose it like that, it could very well be joining the Rising. But how would he know?

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 1 - 4

1) What were your thoughts of The Story of the Pilot written at the front of the book? I believe this is the first time we see all that information put together.

2) Were you surprised that Xander was an Official? I don't recall, but I guess I might have forgotten, them saying he was one in Crossed. He has to act all proud of the uniform.
I didn't remember that either. It was a surprise to me, but I felt that he could play a big role later in the Rising.

3) What do you think of the Rising's plan to release then cure the Plague? Will they be selective in who they cure? Is Cassia immune? Will they let those in charge of the society succumb to the Plague's fate? At first it bothered me because I thought they were going to sacrifice lives. To me that was really disturbing, especially where the children were concerned. Knowing they had a cure made it a little more tolerable, but still there is risk involved and I didn't like the thought of any accidental deaths that could occur.
As for those in charge, if the Rising let those individuals die, it wouldn't look good to the population. Although those in charge are so tyrannical in their control, I think the Rising leadership needs to demonstrate they are merciful and truly want what is best for everyone.

4) What did you think of Cassia doing sorting for the Match banquet? Could a member of the Rising have tinkered with her Matching pool? Could that be how Ky's name got included?
Honestly, I didn't understand what was going on here. I did think that the pool had definitely been compromised.

5) Do you think Cassia's explanation of what happened to her was plausible? I guess anything is possible. I think I am having trouble understanding the red tablet. If it's supposed to steal your memories, how can she remember simply by looking at a piece of paper that says remember?
Wouldn't she have forgotten everything, despite a reminder to remember?

6) What did you think of the three different person perspectives in the book? It could have been done differently, but I kind of like knowing what's happening with each of the main characters.

I am glad we get multiple perspectives to see what is going on in different areas of the society.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 5 - 8

7) So Cassia might not be immune. Are there people in Central administering the cure?

Yes, I think so.

8) What did you make of Cassia's papers (stories and poems) being stolen?

They were so well hidden that I can't imagine who found them. I understand why they would be stolen, but the fact that they were found is bizarre.

9) So did Society cause the plague or is that the cover the Resistance is using to make themselves out to be the heroes? Did we just assume it was the Resistance who unleashed the plague? The water Cassia saw makes me think the Plague was released by the Resistance. What do you think? Sounds like you join or die. Not a great way to recruit people.

I thought it was the Rising who released the plague so that they could find a way to make the Society look incompetent and out of control. Hmmm, "join or die"...I didn't think of it that way. In my mind I am thinking anyone who would want things to stay status quo would be rare, but maybe not!
What will they do to those who resist the Rising??

10) So the enemy has been killed and Society was sending aberrations and anomalies to the outer provinces as a means of cleansing the race and as a means of punishment?

Yes, I think so. There were those who were trying to grow their own food and govern themselves, but Society didn't like that so they sent people like Ky and vick out to fight/be decoys.

11) Do you think the archivist Cassia dealt with is part of the rising? She seemed awful calm about the plague. "People die until there is a cure."

I always thought the Archivists were those who were subversive to the Society. Yes, I think this particular Archivist is part of the Rising.

12) Do you trust the Pilot?

I don't know enough about the Pilot to answer this question. Who is he? How did he become the Pilot? How long as the Rising plan been in the works? Was it his idea, or an idea that has been around for decades?

Chelsi | 49 comments 13. I hope it doesn't because he did it with such good intentions.

14. He loves her so it names sense. I feel bad for him as well though.

15. That was so thoughtful since it would have been more benefit Hal to her to do the trade. I though her poem was beautiful considering how quickly she wrote it.

16. It makes sense from an epidimiological (I think I made that word up) stand pointbut that doesn't mean there isn't more behind it.

17. Ahhh! I really don't know but I want to!

18. No because Sheba's to sneak out so she is earning her passage. The rising, I think, wants her there for a purpose because she is such an excellent sorted.

19. I don't know. Its weird that it was just one random letter.

20. He is just a bully. I think indie's wit will beat his stupid insults any day.

21. This seems like normal responses for both of them.

22. I think Indies will keep him in check.

23. Yes! The changing point of views is making it difficult. How ling was it before xander got the message from Ky.

24. But she wants to be with ky because she loves him in a different way.

25. Yes.

26. Maybe he did do it but I'm sure society used him as a puppet if he did.

27. I think its great. She is setting up a real art museum. I think her grandfather would have liked the idea but I don't know if the rising will.

Questions and Comments for Chapter 24 - 31

46) Well, Ky wasn't from one of the villages. He wasn't immune. So I'm guessing Indie is infected too. I wonder why the Pilot didn't have her go with them? Sounds like Oker was hoping for more subject who were as he termed "fresh".

47) This section which appears to be the last section of the book is titled the Prisoner's Dilemma. Yes, there kind of being held like prisoners, but they don't, at least at the moment, appear to be asked any more questions. They are being kept apart, well, with the exception of Ky and Cassia. In a way, however, with Ky being sick, they are apart. Why do you think Condie gave the name to this section?

48) Cassia and Ky knew Hunter and Eli. Do you think this will help win people over? Additionally, Anna seems to have taken a liking to Cassia.

49) We finally find out what happened to Matthew Markham. Did you think he was still alive? Were you surprised at what his father did?

50) Interesting how the people in the village distrust those from Society since so many of them originally came from there. I guess trust needs to be earned, but you think they could at least be polite. Obviously Ky, Cassia, and Xander were against what Society was doing.

51) Interesting the villages respect the Pilot, but are not willing to be led by him.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 9 - 13

13) Should Xander have vouched for Lei? Will it come back to haunt him later?

This is a tough one. I actually think he shouldn't have vouched for her and that she may be a Society spy. I hope not, though!

14) What do you think of Xander wanting Cassia to choose him? i feel so bad for him. I keep wondering if he'd known he had competition for her would he have done anything differently? I think he had the advantage at first. Could he have kept it had he known?

Xander has loved Cassia for a long time. I feel badly for him too. I don't think he could do anything to change her mind about Ky, though.

15) What did you think of Cassia's advice to the woman to sing to the boy who couldn't sleep? Did you like her lyrics?

I can't imagine not having lullabies. I thought it was sad that this was a new concept for the mother. The lyrics were ok.

16) It sounds like traveling is being limited between the cities. Does this seem logical to you so they can keep control of everyone and the plague spreading or does it seem odd?

I think it makes sense in light of the plague danger.

17) So the Rising is still using Cassia's sorting skills. What in the world is she sorting?

I have no earthly clue.

18) Cassia needs to earn her way out of Central. Does that seem odd since she's been a part of the rising even before the Plague went full force?

19) Who do you think made the E? Cassia made an E earlier in the book. It couldn't be the same one could it? ?

20) What did you make of Connor and his insulting Indie because she said he didn't have what it takes to become the pilot? Will he cause problems later?

Connor is someone who is out to show off and is self-centered. It won't surprise me if he causes problems later. Why include this scene if that's not the case?

21) If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go? Indie says she'd go to some place she hasn't been before. Ky says he'd go to wherever Cassia is.

I don't know where I would choose to go, but I would definitely want my family with me.

22) Ky misses Cassia. Do you think he'll do something desperate to get to her?

I don't think he will. He is being careful and doesn't want to risk getting others into trouble.

23) I'm having a little problem figuring out how much time is passing within the book. Is anyone else feeling the same?

Yes, definitely. (As a side note, I don't think this book is very well-written so far.)

24) What do you think Cassia would have said after the but? That she loved Ky or something else?

But...she loves him like a brother.

25) Do you think Indie still has a crush on Xander? Did she ever have a crush on Xander? I don't recall.

26) What do you think happened with Patrick and his son. Why would he ask, "Why did I do it?" What really happened?

Was he forced to kill him, and then had to take a pill to forget?

27) Sounds like Cassia is going to start up a new type of trading. What do you think of it? Will the rising approve? Do you think her Grandfather would have like the idea?

I don't see why the Rising wouldn't approve. Yes, Grandfather would be proud.

It sounded careless from the Pilot. And I think if Indie is feeling the Plague creeping in, she even less likely than Ky to let the symptoms be noticed. I don't think she'd ever let herself be used as a body, like Ky put it.

Whenever "The prisoners Dilemma" was mentioned, it went beyond the external aspect of pressure, to the group internal state of trust and care. I think Condies means it as the three of them trusting each other to do their part, and see each other through this.

48) Cassia and Ky knew Hunter and Eli. Do you think this will help win people over? Additionally, Anna seems to have taken a liking to Cassia.
Hunter was so broken. Like a wounded animal wanting to die. I don't know how helpful he'll be. I want to see more of Eli, though. Anna seems like an amazing town leader, calm and wise, and strong.

49) We finally find out what happened to Matthew Markham. Did you think he was still alive? Were you surprised at what his father did?
Putting the bit about "Why did I do it" plus the rumors of parents flying their children out, I though it could come to this, but the sheer grief made me think something had gone wrong. And I couldn't quite account as how they'd come to bring Ky to them if they had chosen to send their kid away. I guess this explained that part.

50) Interesting how the people in the village distrust those from Society since so many of them originally came from there. I guess trust needs to be earned, but you think they could at least be polite. Obviously Ky, Cassia, and Xander were against what Society was doing.
I think it has to do with the leap. The town people don't know they actually leaped from the boat at least once already, and risked all, like those that came from the Society running towards the borders. To the town people, they are some suspicious people that were flown in semi willingly by a guy that is trading with them for their freedom.

51) Interesting the villages respect the Pilot, but are not willing to be led by him.
Again, the guy is trading with them for their freedom, not offering it. Why would they follow someone that charges them for what they can achieve on their own work? And as outsiders, I think they see what the reader can glean: that as much as the Rising calls itself a revolution, they are not changing anything significant, plague notwithstanding.

7. Definitely.

8. Yep. She has nothing to barter with.

9. Could very well be. Hopefully we'll get a definitive answer.

10. I agree. Very sad to see.

11. It is really early on.

12. I agree. You have to earn trust.

The Rising came in with all pomp, announcing themselves saviors, and now can't deliver. You have a bunch of scared people that have always been cosseted and corseted, and suddenly aren't. I worry over the building possibilities of civil unrest and violence.

If they're healthy enough I could see this happening, but I wonder if fear of catching the illness would prevent them from doing it? I'm guessing someone will definitely rebel.

True. I just don't like how she keeps trying to take from Cassia. Of course the way she probably sees it is that Cassia as one guy to spear.

Society doesn't have a religion, so the tubes and the hope of bringing people back seems the closest thing people needing one were getting. Xander has his convictions, Cassia and Ky have each other. Other people might need something else to mark their world with hope or give it meaning. At least, that's how I take it.

You may be right. I feel kind of like they're being mislead and that is something I would never wish to be.

I truly wish we had a map to visualize things.

32) I find it interesting that one of the archivist came to the Gallery. Seems like word is spreading.

Yes, and he came to share too!.

Very cool.

33) What did you think of the carvings/drawings on the airships?

Cargo bay, people in it, drinking the sky. It sounded like freedom. Like a slave marking the ship delivering them.

I love it when authors throw in so many extra little details to their stories.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 19 - 23

34) I don't know about anyone else, but it wasn't until this section that I finally got hooked on the book.
Things are picking up. Interestingly, I was caught almost from the start. Xander's POV and the unfolding of the plague did it. It sounded like a du-dum song in the back of my mind, so I wanted to see it explode :D

lol

35) So we find out Oria didn't fare that well with the plague. I wonder if Xander's parents are still there?

That was a downer. Are the troubles because of the mutation, or did the cures come too tight to some spots?. I'd forgotten Xander's family ought to still be there. And his brother! I wonder what he's doing. Xander seems convinced he has to be part of the Rising, but don't you suspect he might have taken their parent's teachings exactly the other way around?

I don't know. That would be interesting to find out.

36) Have you noticed Condie likes to repeat significant facts via more than once and from more than one source? She did it with the vials of DNA and now again with the Otherlands.
In a way, it's neat. Given that all is hear say and rumor, corroborating seem the name of the game.

Perhaps its her way of giving us an extra bit of info so we know more than the characters?

37) So it appears the Archivist stole the items Cassia owned. Now we know the Pilot was suspicious of Cassia, do you think it was on his orders so she'd be stranded where she was? So she'd be separated from Xander and Ky?
Wow, I hadn't hough about it, but it's very possible
I guess I just don't trust him

38) Indie knew the cockpits transmitted everything said to others. I wonder if Ky knew? If he didn't would he have said what he did to Caleb?
I think Ky knew. Remember that previous scene where he wants to talk to Indie, and starts looking for a paper to write on?

True. I forgot about that. I guess Ky is a little reckless at times.

I guess prior to this he was somewhat mysterious and for all we knew these messages could have been prerecorded or perhaps even a digital image created by someone. He also could have altered his appearance. Meeting face to face, as you said. Makes it more real.

Just the conviction the Pilot had about the poem had me think that.

41) What do you think Cassia's Grandfather was trying to tell her about the Red Garden Day?
I so want to know!, lol

Me too. I hope she remembers. I wonder why she can remember things that must have been wiped from her mind?

42)Were you surprised that Cassia's Grandmother was the first Pilot? I wasn't surprised at all. I kind of wondered.
Not a lot. I'd assumed she'd been part of the rising, it was a skip and a beat to make her the Pilot.
:)

True

44) Do you think the Pilot believes them?
I think he has little to loose, and doesn't really care right now one way or the other. If they lie, Ky dies. If they find the cure the Pilot has what he needs, and whether they are for or against the Rising can be dealt with later.

true

45) Anyone else want to ring the neck of the Archivist? I wonder if she could be the double agent here?
Yes! I was so disappointed. I thought she was above getting herself mixed in politics. Even after the deft I would have liked her, because it's a personal weakness, but having her working for the Pilot ruined her character for me. I liked her image of a free agent for preserving culture.
I Agree.

46) What do you think Cassia's father was proud of her for doing? Going after Ky or joining the Rising?
I'd assumed it was going after Ky, but now that you pose it like that, it could very well be joining the Rising. But how would he know?

True. Maybe he didn't figure it out. I just figure it would be obvious if she went after Ky.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 1 - 4

2) Were you surprised that Xander was an Official? I don't recall, but I guess I might have forgotten, them saying he was one in Crossed. He has to act all proud of the uniform.
I didn't remember that either. It was a surprise to me, but I felt that he could play a big role later in the Rising.

I thought that too.

I agree. They need to earn the trust of everyone.

4) What did you think of Cassia doing sorting for the Match banquet? Could a member of the Rising have tinkered with her Matching pool? Could that be how Ky's name got included?
Honestly, I didn't understand what was going on here. I did think that the pool had definitely been compromised.

I've been trying to figure out if this was Condie's way of explaining how Ky got into the pool. I'm still not sure, but it seems likely.

Hopefully it will be explained later. Maybe it's like her waling through the blue pill.

6) What did you think of the three different person perspectives in the book? It could have been done differently, but I kind of like knowing what's happening with each of the main characters.

I am glad we get multiple perspectives to see what is going on in different areas of the society.

I feel like a fly on the wall buzzing from one place to another and seeing all.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 5 - 8

7) So Cassia might not be immune. Are there people in Central administering the cure?

Yes, I think so.

That is what I thought too.

8) What did you make of Cassia's papers (stories and poems) being stolen?

They were so well hidden that I can't imagine who found them. I understand why they would be stolen, but the fact that they were found is bizarre.

I'm siding with Taly on this one that the Archivist or one of her friends watched Cassia and waited.

I don't know. Maybe the Plague will take care of that.

It would be a selective process to keep only the most malleable of people.

11) Do you think the archivist Cassia dealt with is part of the rising? She seemed awful calm about the plague. "People die until there is a cure."

I always thought the Archivists were those who were subversive to the Society. Yes, I think this particular Archivist is part of the Rising.

I agree

12) Do you trust the Pilot?

I don't know enough about the Pilot to answer this question. Who is he? How did he become the Pilot? How long as the Rising plan been in the works? Was it his idea, or an idea that has been around for decades?

Good point. We have no clue if he's really any different from the Society.

13. I hope it doesn't because he did it with such good intentions.
I hope so as well.

14. He loves her so it names sense. I feel bad for him as well though.

It does make sense. I love we finally get the chance to get to know Xander.

15. That was so thoughtful since it would have been more benefit Hal to her to do the trade. I though her poem was beautiful considering how quickly she wrote it.
Me to.

16. It makes sense from an epidimiological (I think I made that word up) stand/point but that doesn't mean there isn't more behind it.

I agree. I'm not sure if you were thinking epidemic?

17. Ahhh! I really don't know but I want to!
I wish we knew more about what her sorting consists of.

18. No because Sheba's to sneak out so she is earning her passage. The rising, I think, wants her there for a purpose because she is such an excellent sorted.

You may be right

19. I don't know. Its weird that it was just one random letter.
I know and it's the one she wrote earlier. Perhaps the makings of a copy cat?

20. He is just a bully. I think indie's wit will beat his stupid insults any day.

Sometimes people lash out to make themselves look better or feel better. We've got this guy's number. He's most definitely a jerk.

21. This seems like normal responses for both of them.
True
22. I think Indies will keep him in check.
I don't know. She's seems the type to do what she wants when she wants and might just think doing something crazy would be fun. I think she's a risk taker.

23. Yes! The changing point of views is making it difficult. How ling was it before xander got the message from Ky.

I think 2 or three months. I wish Condie could have tracked the passage of time better.

24. But she wants to be with ky because she loves him in a different way.
I think you're right. :)
25. Yes.
Could be.
26. Maybe he did do it but I'm sure society used him as a puppet if he did.
I agree
27. I think its great. She is setting up a real art museum. I think her grandfather would have liked the idea but I don't know if the rising will.
I think Cassia has some people skills. She's always talking about how charismatic Xander is, but I think she is too, but doesn't realize it.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I'll respond to the rest of the questions tomorrow. I'm starting to get a little tire, so I'll post today's questions:

Questions and Comments for Chapters 32 - 40

52)Do you think Cassia just had a natural immunity to the Plague? I guess it's a bit like other illnesses, take chicken pox. Some people get the disease and don't have much to show for it. I find it interesting.

53) Were you surprised that Cassia wasn't upset about the kiss when Ky told her?

54) What did you think of the poem Cassia wrote for Xander?

55)Interesting that Ky dreamed about Indie when he was sick and Cassia dreamed of Xander and it seemed they were both trying to guide them out of their sickness. What do you make of this?

56) Is the sort Cassia faintly remembers the one someone told her was for her grandfather?

57) Taly had brought up earlier that she wondered if each of us were our own pilot. This part of the book sounds a little bit like that is what Condie might be hinting at. Do you think that is the case or do you think Condie's trying to say we all need to find our own pilot?

58) What do you think about Cassia sorting for a cure? Do you think she'll find it?

59) Would you have trusted Hunter with Ky if you were Cassia? I thought it odd she trusted him so much.

60) Now that we've got to know everyone pretty well, if you were Cassia would you choose Xander or Ky and why? I personally like Xander better. He's seems pretty honest and sweet.

52)Do you think Cassia just had a natural immunity to the Plague? I guess it's a bit like other illnesses, take chicken pox. Some people get the disease and don't have much to show for it. I find it interesting.
Oker did say that a bit over 5% of any population has a level of resistance or immunity to a certain decease. Cassia very well could be one of those lucky.

53) Were you surprised that Cassia wasn't upset about the kiss when Ky told her?
In a way, I get that she likes Idie too much, and also, she realizes that she loves Xander a lot too, so maybe begrudge a kiss is not in her place.

54) What did you think of the poem Cassia wrote for Xander?
It fitted him so well

55)Interesting that Ky dreamed about Indie when he was sick and Cassia dreamed of Xander and it seemed they were both trying to guide them out of their sickness. What do you make of this?
Nice balance, huh?. I think they see themselves in them, so in a way, it's a part of themselves that guides them out?

56) Is the sort Cassia faintly remembers the one someone told her was for her grandfather?
Hadn't made the connection. It sound likely.

57) Taly, This part about the pilot sounds like it's going where you thought--about each of us being our own pilots. Do you think that is the case or perhaps we all need to find our own pilot?
Probably a bit of both. Choosing someone to admire and follow, maybe for ever, mybe for a while, has the "choice" bit, which implies that in that you are your own pilot too. I do believe there was supposed to be a designated Pilot from a revolution point of view, but from the true, change-the-world-to-the-better point of view, you need to be cognizant of your actions and your choices, and aware that even good intentions can lead to disastrous results, not just a mindless follower. That means questioning the banner someone puts up for you.

58) What do you think about Cassia sorting for a cure? Do you think she'll find it?
What is our protagonist doing there then? :D

59) Would you have trusted Hunter with Ky if you were Cassia? I thought it odd she trusted him so much.
No, but she didn't exactly have better options. I'd have chosen Eli.

60) Now that we've got to know everyone pretty well, if you were Cassia would you choose Xander or Ky and why? I personally like Xander better. He's seems pretty honest and sweet.
I really, really, really like Xander, but if I'm honest he's too much superman (in the psychological sense) for me. I reckon Id get tired of trying to save the world all the time down the years. Ky for me.

Questions and Comments for Chapters 9 - 13

13) Should Xander have vouched for Lei? Will it come back to haunt him later?

This is a tough one. I actually think he shouldn't have vouched for her and that she may be a Society spy. I hope not, though!

I agree. We and he don't know a lot about her. I don't think it was wise.

I agree.

15) What did you think of Cassia's advice to the woman to sing to the boy who couldn't sleep? Did you like her lyrics?

I can't imagine not having lullabies. I thought it was sad that this was a new concept for the mother. The lyrics were ok.

It is very sad. It definitely shows you how controlling the Society is.

16) It sounds like traveling is being limited between the cities. Does this seem logical to you so they can keep control of everyone and the plague spreading or does it seem odd?

I think it makes sense in light of the plague danger.

True.

17) So the Rising is still using Cassia's sorting skills. What in the world is she sorting?

I have no earthly clue.

Me either and I'm curious. I thought the Society did it to predict and in some ways control the society.

20) What did you make of Connor and his insulting Indie because she said he didn't have what it takes to become the pilot? Will he cause problems later?

Connor is someone who is out to show off and is self-centered. It won't surprise me if he causes problems later. Why include this scene if that's not the case?

My thoughts exactly.

21) If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go? Indie says she'd go to some place she hasn't been before. Ky says he'd go to wherever Cassia is.

I don't know where I would choose to go, but I would definitely want my family with me.

Me too.

22) Ky misses Cassia. Do you think he'll do something desperate to get to her?

I don't think he will. He is being careful and doesn't want to risk getting others into trouble.

True, but if he can find away to minimize it I think he'd go for it.

23) I'm having a little problem figuring out how much time is passing within the book. Is anyone else feeling the same?

Yes, definitely. (As a side note, I don't think this book is very well-written so far.)

I wonder if she was pressured to get this one out faster? There was less time from the second to third book then there was from the first to second.

24) What do you think Cassia would have said after the but? That she loved Ky or something else?

But...she loves him like a brother.

There are so many possibilities, but she is definitely let him know her true feelings. The question is how gently will she let him down.

25) Do you think Indie still has a crush on Xander? Did she ever have a crush on Xander? I don't recall.

In the last book she stole the data card from the match banquet Cassia had on Xander. She formed a crush on him then.

26) What do you think happened with Patrick and his son. Why would he ask, "Why did I do it?" What really happened?

Was he forced to kill him, and then had to take a pill to forget?

That's kind of what it sounds like.

27) Sounds like Cassia is going to start up a new type of trading. What do you think of it? Will the rising approve? Do you think her Grandfather would have like the idea?

I don't see why the Rising wouldn't approve. Yes, Grandfather would be proud.

I think at this point in the story there are so many questions about what the Rising expects and will accept. I tread cautiously

It sounded careless from the Pilot. And I think if Indie is feeling the Plague creeping in, she even less likely than Ky to let the symptoms be noticed. I don't think she'd ever let herself be used as a body, like Ky put it.

I agree. Very careless and self serving. Perhaps he gave her a choice and she said no? I think knowing how quickly the plague hits that I'd ground my pilots to prevent a crash. Very irresponsible.

Whenever "The prisoners Dilemma" was mentioned, it went beyond the external aspect of pressure, to the group internal state of trust and care. I think Condies means it as the three of them trusting each other to do their part, and see each other through this.

I believe you're right. I'm head smacking myself for not making the connection.

True. They just seem very untrusting of them an I thought the fact Cassia and Ky didn't reject Hunter for being from outside of Society might make them take a second look at them.

I thought it had to be something worse than sending him away too and had no clue how Ky fit into it all.

Perhaps.

True

Chelsi | 49 comments 28. Not only is the rising in danger of falling but all of humanity is now. Hopefully there are some who are immune.
29. I knew this was coming but Im so glad Ky pushed her away. I cant Blaine indie for liking him though. I know I do.
30. I think people will always seek a way to bring back loved ones but I think there may be more to it in the context of this book.
31. May be it is places beyond their continent. Maybe beyond their world.
32. Yes. I think it will continue to grow.
33. I wonder what whatever they are drinking represents but even more so I wonder what Caleb's deal is!

Ah, I wasn't sure.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions and Comments for Chapters 41 - 53

61) Oker dies? Did it add a little drama to the end? I guess Condie truly wanted Cassia to save the day.

62) I think we all predicted Indie would either get sick or die. Do you think Ky truly dreamed of her or she somehow managed to enter his dreams? Did you like the this?

63) Here is another instance where the trust comes in--when Xander is imprisoned and Cassia knows he isn't lying. She could have thought he would kill Ky to have a shot with her, but she knew him better and trusted him.

64) Prediction time. We have a lot of unknowns, a lot of sick secondary character, and a society torn apart. Who do you think will survive? Will Condie go for a happy ending now that Indie is dead? Will Ky and Cassia try to go to the Otherlands or stay with the Rising as it builds a new society? What will Xander do? Will the Pilot keep up his end of the bargain with the villagers?

65) Also, I need to say I like the covers for this series a lot. Did you notice the color scheme of the three books matches the tablets? Green, Blue, and Red? Also that weird E is appropriate because of the E Cassia found etched in the ground. I hope it will have a bigger significance by the end of the book.

66) Do you think Cassia did right by not admitting she figured out what the mystery ingredient was that would cure people?

@Snady
15) What did you think of Cassia's advice to the woman to sing to the boy who couldn't sleep? Did you like her lyrics?
I can't imagine not having lullabies. I thought it was sad that this was a new concept for the mother. The lyrics were ok.

I felt the same when I realized Cassi couldn't recognize that the women in that cave painting where dancing. Like my heart was being squeezed.

*Chuckle* When Oker denies Xander the knowledge of what he was getting, it was like seeing him put on a red shirt and announce: "Here I'm dying with all my secrets". It had Death-tope written all over it

62) I think we all predicted Indie would either get sick or die. Do you think Ky truly dreamed of her or she somehow managed to enter his dreams? Did you like the this?
I don't know if it was something supernatural, or if it was just Ky's subconscious realizing Indie was probably sick, but I liked it.

63) Here is another instance where the trust comes in--when Ky is imprisoned and Cassia knows he isn't lying. She could have thought he would kill Ky to have a shot with her, but she knew him better and trusted him.
Xander, right? I think he keeps proving he's trustworthy, starting form the compass. Too much of a fair player. I wanted to hug him when Cassia ask him to help again. Poor guy

Is the saga supposed to end in this volume? Cause I see NO way of wrapping all this mess in this book unless they choose to run for the hills and leave everyone to burn, and don't think that's likely. I don't think everyone will survive. Either Cassia or Xander are going to find themselves bereaved I think.Just as long as it's not Bram. I could never forgive Condie.

Yes, the package was well though out. I remember looking at the first book cover and thinking: "princessy dress, how tacky", but then it made perfect sense. And the second had Cassia in her working clothes. It looks like the designer did read the books, doesn't it?

66) Do you think Cassia did right by not admitting she figured out what the mystery ingredient was that would cure people?
I don't know. I'm having some anxiety over it. On one side, the situation was such that she needed the town leader to support her, and the town leader needed to save face and get her passage. Desperate all around. On the other, that was a winning point that she's not getting to use with the Pilot.

I found this little bit very strange. I felt Condie was in a rush to end things and truthfully I don't know what she was thinking. I'll comment more in the next set of questions about this.

I'm a little unsure if I like this. Usually when this type of thing surfaces in literature it's reserved for people who are connected on another level either through love (as in true love) or blood. Neither is supposedly the case in this situation so I have to wonder did Ky turn down his true soul mate? Okay the guy thought one too many times (for me anyway) that Indie was beautiful.

63) Here is another instance where the trust comes in--when Ky is imprisoned and Cassia knows he isn't lying. She could have thought he would kill Ky to have a shot with her, but she knew him better and trusted him.

Yes, Xander. Oops! I changed it in the question.

64) Prediction time. We have a lot of unknowns, a lot of sick secondary character, and a society torn apart. Who do you think will survive? Will Condie go for a happy ending now that Indie is dead? I believe this is the last book. If you get the Advertisements that Goodreads is constantly bombarding us with it stated something like, "It's okay to cry because it's over.". Can't wait to see what you think about the ending. I didn't think there were enough pages left to end the book either.

65) Also, I need to say I like the covers for this series a lot. Did you notice the color scheme of the three books matches the tablets? Green, Blue, and Red? I liked that someone finally got a cover right. There are really too few.

66) Do you think Cassia did right by not admitting she figured out what the mystery ingredient was that would cure people?

I understand why she did it, but I didn't like it.

67) I confess I thought Vick was going to end up being the Pilot's son. Instead Lei ended up being his wife. What did you think about this? I'm rather disappointed by this. Vick got married to her, she leaves town almost immediately and she had no clue whatsoever that her husband had ended up going a little bonkers and been declared an aberration? I'm guessing that things were done quickly, but this leaves me with soooooo many questions. Why didn't she let him know it was a possibility? Why didn't she let him know she'd be okay and would contact him later. If she didn't know what happened to him, it seemed to me she never looked. How did she manage to reinvent herself as someone else into the Society if she wasn't part of the Rising?

68) Did you mind not knowing who won the election? Were you surprised that it looked like Cassia and Ky were going to stay put?

69) Did you feel that Cassia finding the cure at the end was too rushed? Did you feel like this whole last section was a bit rushed or did you think Condie wrapped things up nicely?

70) What did you think of Cassia being the one who ultimately added Ky to the Matching pool? Did you like the irony of it? I guess it was the Rising's way of stirring up trouble? Sounds like Ky wasn't the only one who would have been added. So who and how many others did this happen to? I can't help but wonder.

71) Did you like how Ky and Lei all of a sudden declare their love for one another? It's nice for Ky to end up with someone, but I thought it was a little sudden. They started off as friends and respected each other, but I felt it was too soon for that declaration. Am I the only one?

72) What was your favorite part of this book? Did you have a favorite quote?

73) What were you overall feelings of the book? What will you rate this one?

74) Is there anything that wasn't included that you wish had been?
