Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments It seems the paperwhite is being delivered. There are observations about uneven lighting and bright spots.

How are you getting on with the new kindle?

message 2: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I'm waiting till I've played with one in Waterstones next week...

Anita | 3313 comments Mine is not going to arrive till November 12th, if they are in Waterstones next week then I will get one from there, being without a kindle is no fun at all .

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I didn't know they would be in waterstones. It must be worth having a look.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Anita wrote: "Mine is not going to arrive till November 12th, if they are in Waterstones next week then I will get one from there, being without a kindle is no fun at all ."

Anita! I don't recall you saying you're between kindles!

What happened?

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments It bust, remember? Couple of weeks ago.

message 8: by Pete (new)

Pete Sortwell (pete_sortwell) | 20 comments I"m also waiting for mine to come on the 12th.

Although if I'm not impressed i'll be moving to the iPad mini.

We'll see.

message 9: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments It wouldn't go on line Patti, I am just so unlucky with them going wrong and I look after them so well, a friend said that I should chuck the next one about a bit and maybe I will have better luck that way, not going too of course.

Tim thank you for saying about Waterstones, I gave them a ring to ask when they would be in stock and they had got one left, I reserved it and Nikki took me straight down for it so I am a happy bunny again now.
I really did miss my kindle and although the iPad is great I found it too heavy to hold for long periods of time.
A for the Paperwhite, well it's just fine, very like the touch with the light, you can also have the front covers displayed although I prefer just the title as I have had before. It also fits in the same case as the touch so I pad and kindle are still in matching jackets. I am sure I will find other new things on it as I use it but right now I am just happy to curl up with my beloved kindle.
I wouldn't have got one if the touch hadn't gone wrong but as it did I thought I may as well get the new one, if this one goes wrong after 5 months they shouldn't be telling me that it's obsolete, I hope anyway.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh yay Anita! I'm so glad you've got a working kindle again!

Did amazon try to talk you through fixing the touch with no luck? I do hope they at least gave you your money back!

message 11: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Yes Patti we went through it for about 3 hours until I said, Enough !
Yes I got my money back. It's just so much messing after only having the touch for 5 months.

message 12: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments They've got a big stack of PaperWhite boxes in Tescos for you to take to the customer service desk and queue to be told they haven't actually got any, and no they won't let you pay for the other things you've got while you're here, so go and queue again at the checkouts.

Pillocks.

message 13: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments That's really bad isn't it Tim, do thy tell you when they will have stock ? I was shocked when Waterstones said they had one left. I asked him if he knew why there was trouble getting hold of them and he said that there just were not enough in the UK yet, you would think that Amazon would have thought it through a little better before putting all the hype out there wouldn't you.
I hope you get one before too long although I don't think they are anything special really.
Talking of which I shall go and use mine now as iPad battery is about to run out.

message 14: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Nope, they were totally blasé about it. When I asked why they had all the boxes out when they knew they didn't have stock, they just shrugged.

message 15: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Brilliant Anita, enjoy! I shall be interested to hear how it goes as I am tempted to get one for my birthday.

message 16: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Very poor Tim, guess you won't be going back to Tesco in a hurry.

It's ok up to now Sarah, I haven't had much time with it yet, just loaded my books back on, which took all afternoon, it's a bit easier to get your books out of the archive s now you have a cloud / device button, same as the iPad kindle app, so it's quicker than just going through manage my kindle page.
Will let you know what else I find when I find it.
Night night.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

I had a play with one in Waterstones last week. Very shiny, but I won't be replacing my Kindle 4 with one just yet.

message 18: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments A friend of mine got a Paperwhite from the Waterstones in the city centre today so they are out there if you don't want to wait for the amazon delivery.

message 19: by Leanne (new)

Leanne (littlebunnylibrary) I'm quite happy with my Kindle Keyboard and I do have it insured just in case I drop it or something. but I'm now wondering if I'd be able to get a newer version if. anything happened if I claimed on my home insurance. My Kindle works fine though and I've been very lucky with it as I've had it over a year. I won't go look at the paperwhite in case it makes me want one! :)

message 20: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I had a look at the paperwhite today in Waterstones. The screen isn't particularly nice to use your fingertip on. Maybe that is just me

message 21: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Might nip into Reading at lunchtime and have a look - I'm still PO'd with Tescos!

message 22: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments The screen does have a slightly different feel Elle but not found it a huge problem, i do think it marks easier though. I dont think i would have wanted one had my touch not gone faulty, its like everything else right now where they bring out new ones all the time and there really isnt that much between them.

I just want one that keeps working !!

message 23: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Forgot it was half term... Memo to self: don't go into town again before next week!

Looked at the paper white in Waterstones - seems much nicer than the Old KK. & seeing the covers on the home screen puts it on par with the iPad & android apps - never liked the old list view, it looked so primitive. Yes the backlit does look a little patchy along the bottom edge, but it's just where the LEDs are, & I think you'd get used to it pretty quickly. It's not like the blotchy screens that plagued the early production iPads, where the glue hadn't set properly.

Anyhow, they didn't have any in stock - they didn't get many and sold out in under a day. Won't have any more till December, they said.

message 24: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Sorry you couldn't get one today Tim. It's worth ringing other branches in your area. I got the last one from the Meadowhall branch but yesterday a friend got hers from the branch in the city centre where they had quite a few still in stock. So do look round if you don't want to wait
.

message 25: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine | 575 comments Got my pw yesterday morning, wasn't supposed to be dispatched until the 12 Nov,so that was a bit of a bonus, can't believe how fast it is when you search for anything, don't know if i prefer it to my kk though.

message 26: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Must admit Lorraine that having had all the kindles my KK was the one I loved he most, it was the first one had so maybe it was that. The PW is nice though, I do enjoy using it.

message 27: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Just been to Waterstones and bought a Paperwhite (yay!) They've literally just goth them back in stock & although they've got "plenty" at the mo, reckon they'll be gone by the end of the week.

Anyhow, sat in the cafe and set it up over the free wifi. Took all of 5 minutes (most of which was negotiating Waterstones wifi login screen!) Works a treat! :)

message 28: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Really pleased for you Tim ! It was very easy to set up and I do like the fact that you can see all your books when you go to the cloud button, makes downloading a lot quicker and easier.
Hope you really enjoy using your new PW kindle

message 29: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Got the tiny leather case for it too - the one with the magnetic clasp that automatically turns it on and off. Very swish. Was playing with it in bed at 4 this morning (don't ask!) and it's very readable in the dark, or it would be if I had my glasses on!

message 30: by Patti (baconater) (last edited Nov 08, 2012 08:23AM) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments So.

You need your glasses on to find it so you can play with it in the dark.

Just so that's made perfectly clear.

*giggles*

message 31: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine | 575 comments There's an update for it already,i don't bother with doing it myself i wait for the automatic.Amazon link
http://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/kindle/...

message 32: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Thanks Lorraine, like you I wait for them to send it through, I can get it wrong that way !
Sounds like you are really enjoying it Tim, what's the first book you are reading?
Now Patti don't you go moving my glasses I named them to find the door, let alone the kindle !

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Lol Anita!

I need a pair of glasses so I can find my glasses!

message 34: by Janey (new)

Janey | 46 comments I had an email yesterday to say my Kindle Paperwhite was being despatched a week earlier than expected. Paid for first class postage and was all excited this morning that it would be there for me at work (had it delivered to work's address) but when the post arrived no Paperwhite....gutted. Have made an excuse that we need more mail sacks at work and will venture down to the sorting office again to see if it's there. Fingers crossed.

message 35: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I hope it is Janey!

message 36: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Good luck Janey!

message 37: by Janey (new)

Janey | 46 comments Unfortunately, just got back from the Sorting Office and no Kindle there for me. Most disappointed :-(

Will go again tomorrow and hope it's there. My cover has now been despatched so hopefully they will both be waiting for me tomorrow.

message 38: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Aw, how disappointing :o(

message 39: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Collected my new shiney from Waterstone's today and have finished my first book already. Well pleased!
Now need to find a cover and I am set!

message 40: by Lorraine (last edited Nov 18, 2012 12:09AM) (new)

Lorraine | 575 comments Hubby bought this one,it turns the kindle on and off on opening. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0... he ordered it,it was only 99p bit but for £2.95 still agood price.

message 41: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Arghhhhhh! Hubbie ordered me the official Amazon one last night and I think he paid around £30 for it.I can't say I don't want it as it is a present for my birthday in a couple of weeks time.
What a bargain Lorraine.

message 42: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine | 575 comments Amazon only do leather cases so i have to go elsewhere,my other pw case was 15 quid.

message 43: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I'm really considering getting a PW. My own KK's battery is getting quite bad. When I use the light or have my wifi on for a few minutes or even sorting things into collections drains my battery so bad. It's much worse than it used to be and I have to charge it often.

My cracks are also getting really bad and my lighted cover which has been on the ritz for a while now is starting to really drive me insane

message 44: by Simon (Highwayman) (last edited Nov 18, 2012 06:57AM) (new)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments That case really is a bargain. I am thinking of buying one but then I will have to buy a paperwhite so not so cheap really....

message 45: by Jay-me (Janet) (last edited Nov 18, 2012 12:40PM) (new)

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments At our family get together yesterday my brother's in-laws were discussing whether to get a kindle or an ipad. They looked at my KK & my nephew's ipad and are going away to think about it. What they want is mainly something for him to read books on - to me the best option for them is a kindle and probably a paperwhite for the light.

For myself - I'm not bothered at all about the light (as I have said before) & if I read on the cloud reader I have the sepia background as I prefer that. If I was to get a replacement for my current 2 year old wifi only KK, then I would go for the basic kindle. Unless I had a mad moment and totally lost all sense in which case the non HD fire would be a remote possibility. ( I say non HD because another thing that we were discussing yesterday was the suggestion that women don't notice the difference between HD & normal - I certainly can't see the difference, so paying more for something that makes no difference at all to what I am watching is a waste)

message 46: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I am a wee bit annoyed at Waterstone's dumping a blog that I didn't ask for on my PW.They have also hijacked the screensaver.

message 47: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Oh, that's out of order! I'd have a strop!

message 48: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments You can unsubscribe the blog easy enough.

message 49: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I didn't even open it Tim.I started off with a nice screensaver with pens and then I had the girl under the tree but now I only seem to be getting the Quote with the ad for Waterstones.
I don't think I would have minded so much had my purchase experience in the shop not been so negative.I queued for 20min.only to be told I was at the wrong counter.Found the right one then had to wait again. The staff looked so miserable as well.Ian Rankin is doing a book signing there on 7th Dec but I don't even think that is enough to entice me back.

message 50: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Yes, I've just noticed all the nice screensavers on mine appear to have been eaten by the Waterstones one. Sorry to hear about your in-store experience - my local waterstones is only a little shop, and they couldn't have been more helpful. I can't say I've ever had to queue there for more than a couple of minutes (well, except for the Peter F Hamilton signing, but that was a bit of an exception).
