Richard Mourdock, Republican candidate for Senate in Indiana, added his name to the growing list of ‘Republicans saying really stupid things about rape’.

Josh (cuculain42) | 3 comments Of course god would have intended the pregnancy, a woman wouldn't be pregnant if it was a "legitimate rape" anyway...

James Lindsay My thought is that these hard-right Christians are being politicized in exactly the same way that hard-right Muslims are by groups like the Taliban. The likeness is incredible. Just like as more and more border-right Muslims get worked up about overblown injustices against Islam and fall to the hard right, giving the Taliban more power, we see bullshit things here like a "war on Christmas" and "liberals trying to end Christianity" being blasted from hard-right media almost incessantly. Why?

Well some of these yahoos might actually be people promoted from the ranks of angry Religious Right folks. Others are just hard-right politically and know the value of manipulating the credulous.

This is scary.

James Lindsay I don't feel any need to bring violence to them. I just wish there was a way to get them to pay the social price they deserve for running their mouths like this. Their base is foaming at the mouth, though, and mostly by design, so until that problem is solved, there will be no fix. Further, the for-profit media loves a juicy drama, so they're not about to help much, even when they're not in the wing that's intentionally trying to whip up the foam.
