I've just posted the poll to vote for October's genre. As Halloween is coming up, I'll be voting for Horror/Gothic/Ghost stories myself.....

message 360: by [deleted user] (new)

Liz, I am a 22 year old british writer Jane Brooke, 9 new books at amazon in 1013...How do I get one of my books into your poll, or is this the wrong page to ask. CHeers Jane

message 361: by Liz, Moderator (new)

Liz | 4135 comments Mod
Hi Jane, we don't vote for specific books, but the genre instead. once the genre is selected, we all compare notes/ make recommendations, then actual book choice is down to the individual.

message 362: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you, I appreciate that Cheers jane

Just over 24 hours until the poll to choose the next genre closes. With Halloween at the end of the month Horror/gothic/ghost stories are way ahead...

I conk out with undisguised lack of relish.

Do I take it, this one's just not your cup of tea Ian? I'm amazed how I can usually twist the genre to find a book that I like (except when it comes to poetry, that's the genre I really struggle with - I blame school...)

message 371: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
Nor my cup of coffee Liz....but that's the point isn't it??, so after perusing my kindles, I think I may go for Apt Pupil by Stephen King by Stephen King.

Absolutely ;)

Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments Good choice Ian - enjoy.

I'm undecided so far - might try and find a nice short ghost story - any suggestions?

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Great choice Ian - I bought myself Doctor Sleep for my birthday so will be reading that all being well before the end of the month! I am so far behind my target since leaving work - too many distractions here by the sea!

message 375: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 651 comments Dave
Have you read The Woman in Black, short spooky ghost story and not the same as the film.
There's also M.R.James Oh whistle and I'll come to you my lad in Count Magnus and Other Ghost Stories by M.R. James or Sheridan Le fanu In a Glass Darkly by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu a collection of short stories.

message 376: by Dave (new)

Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments Thanks Deanne - I think I'll try Woman in Black

message 377: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Same author as Woman in Black on kindle daily deal with The Small Hand which is classed as horror. Worth 99p.

Susan Helen wrote: "Same author as Woman in Black on kindle daily deal with The Small Hand which is classed as horror. Worth 99p."

I noticed this, but thought it might be too scary for my wimpy tastes....definatly a bargain though....

message 379: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Well, me too but a review said you can read it in a few hours, I figure read it in the morning then read something fluffy after.

message 380: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 651 comments The small hand isn't that scary, more a ghost story than horror.

I was just thinking about it Bill, but I can't get to my PC until tomorrow (& you can't post polls from a mobile - yet). So I'll do it in the morning.

Where is the poll posted? There was no link from the email notifying members about it, I have looked on the Genre Challenge thread but can't find it!

message 385: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments To of the page, under polls.

You won't be able to access it from a mobile device (for some reason they haven't included polls in the app). Go to the website instead. It's both at the bottom of the UK Bookclub home page and, as Helen says, look top right, and click on polls.

message 387: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 5 comments Thank you, I hadn't noticed that list to the right. My excuse is a combination of having dyspraxia, and using a netbook. Have now voted, my choice is one of the ones in the lead, so I'm crossing my fingers.

message 388: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments So, spying then... I think we should redo the Christmas theme for December, I enjoyed that.

Yes, spies/espionage for November. I'm not near the PC so will have to set up the new thread later...

We could do a Christmas theme for December, though I'd need some suggestions....

Bugger....finished Winter in Madrid on 31.10....bad karma.

message 391: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Lol.

Liz there are lots of books with Christmas in the title. Shall we go for it? Oh, does watching Bond, James Bond count as spy?

message 392: by Sue (new)

Sue | 1296 comments I'd like a Christmas one - still got some left from last year!

message 393: by Bill (new)

Bill | 2773 comments Personally, I'm not bothered either way, but if a Xmas theme is chosen for Dec, I'll try to find something suitable.. :0)

Good suggestion Ian, but I read A Christmas Carol last year ;)

message 396: by Sue (new)

Sue | 1296 comments Sure you can find a good murder that takes place at Christmas, Ian. :)

message 397: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments We (that's a royal we in case you didn't pick up on it) could set up a mini poll to see if people wanted to do a Christmas one or stick with the normal. Ian, you could read Sharpe's Christmas!

message 398: by Jayne (new)

Jayne | 109 comments I'd love a Christmas challenge. I've got Hercule Poirot's Christmas to re-read over the Christmas holidays and I'm trying to find The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding as I've never read this.

Ian (pepecan) | 5088 comments Mod
Bugger democracy. I'd just do it Liz.......maybe as a 12 days of Xmas special added on to the December pick, then the curmudgeonly amongst us can just ignore it as best we can.

message 400: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments Yay!
