Yes, .A Matter For Men (The War Against the Chtorr, #1) is the one. I really enjoyed the first book or two, but the last 2 were ponderous philosophy/psycho babble. Not enough action.
There is a trilogy that IMO is a prelude, The Far Side Of The Sky: Jumping Off The Planet ; Bouncing Off The Moon ; Leaping To The Stars. It sure reads like one to me, but someone said Gerrold said it wasn't or wasn't strictly one or something like that. Anyway, I liked them. Not as much as the first Chtorr, but better than the last 2.
