Ellie | 54 comments I don't think I'm doing this one after all, since most of the books I looked up are e-books and don't have a number. I could make some educated guesses, but I like to be precise. I'm funny that way. :-)

No problem Ellie! I like being precise too. ;)

message 53: by Nancy (new)

Nancy GG (littlemsgg) Hi Trevor, please add me to this challenge. I'm projecting 20 books (1 per category.) Thanks.

message 54: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (melaniebopp) I am going to try for all 20 categories.

message 55: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Trevor, I think my goal will be 5. I want to surpass that, but not really being a non-fiction reader (and only having 1 non-fiction book in my possession) I don't want to make myself crazy, haha.

message 56: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments Hey Trevor, I'm going for 13.

message 57: by Nathan (last edited Jan 04, 2013 11:06AM) (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Updated to here!

Welcome Melanie, Ashley, and Nathaly!

How are you guys coming along with this so far? I know it's only been a few days, but has anyone started their first one yet?

I started Parasite Rex : Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures a few days ago and am really surprised at how much I like it so far. It's way way out of my usual comfort zone!

message 58: by SibylM (last edited Jan 04, 2013 12:19PM) (new)

SibylM (sibyldiane) | 223 comments I'm in this for ten. I have no idea what they will be yet!

eta: for an easy way to find a book's Dewey classification, you can use the OCLC DeweyBrowser: http://www.oclc.org/dewey/resources/s...

Just enter the title, or title and author, and it will give you the Dewey number. It's a great resource for those of us who mostly read ebooks :)

message 59: by Kaitlin (new)

Kaitlin (kait-k) | 537 comments Just finished my first one! Phantoms on the Bookshelves by Jacques Bonnet

I don't really recommend it, but it was cute and quick, which I needed because The Count of Monte Cristo is much longer than I first realized!

message 60: by Zara's Retreat (last edited Jan 06, 2013 07:22AM) (new)

message 61: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments Oh, I recommend "The man who mistook his wife for a hat". There are some baffling stories in there! Good for anyone who's ever wondered just how weird things can turn out when the brain misbehaves. And how incredibly well people can compensate for almost all of it.

message 62: by Gaijinmama (new)

Gaijinmama | 37 comments Oh, you are such a bunch of enablers!
I always have one fiction and one nonfiction book going so I'll definitely try this one. I'll go through my TBR and see which categories I have to work with.

message 63: by Kara (last edited Jan 06, 2013 03:07PM) (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Gaijinmama: I do the same thing! One fiction and one non-fiction (and sometimes one audiobook).

I tend to go through the fiction books much more quickly.

message 64: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) The difficulty is finding ones that fit different sections of the DDS, I find!

Karina, I'm definitely putting that on my TBR! Sounds right up my alley. :)

message 66: by ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (last edited Jan 17, 2013 04:39PM) (new)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 169 comments I've finally decided on conquering at least 6 books for this challenge. I already have one ready to go, apparently! It's sort of a memoir/family living/medical (I guess) book and it's got a DD number, woot.

1/6

600-649:
The End of Your Life Book Club (number 619.a bunch of other numbers lol) -- 1/17/13

message 68: by Nancy (new)

Nancy GG (littlemsgg) I'll be reading one book per category. That's 20 books for this challenge. Update: 2/20.

message 72: by Kattibrie (new)

Kattibrie | 96 comments Ok, I have a question - I read this book: Lost In Translation: Misadventures In English Abroad. Towards which category could I count it? :)

message 73: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I would assume that would be:
400-449: Language, Linguistics, English & Old English, German, Romance Languages

message 74: by Robyn (new)

Robyn | -15 comments That sounds cool, Robyn! Maybe I'll read that one too."

this book was short so it was a quick read, more like a persuasive essay actually. i really dont agree with the idea of no one having any free will but it made me think!

Kattibrie | 96 comments Kara wrote: "I would assume that would be:

1. 400-449: Lost In Translation Misadventures In English Abroad by Charlie Croker - finished 09.01.

message 76: by Kattibrie (new)

Kattibrie | 96 comments Oh, I forgot I didn't set a goal - make it 5 for me :)

message 77: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (godsmissiongal) | 173 comments Can someone help me in determining what the Dewey Decimal Number would be for this book. I just finished reading it and it is nonfiction but has no DDN. Thanks.

God, Are You Nice or Mean?: Trusting God ... After the Orphanage by Debra Delulio Jones, M Ed Read 1/17/2013 4.5 Stars

message 78: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) I don't know about the official number, but it strikes me as a 200-249 book. That's the religion section.

message 79: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (godsmissiongal) | 173 comments Ok, Thanks.

message 80: by Sonja (new)

Sonja | 10 comments Sounds like fun! I have been wanting to read more non fiction this year. Put me down for 5!

Think I will be reading a lot more than my 2013 goal this year with all these challenges I keep signing myself up for!

Now just have to keep track of them all!

message 81: by Kattibrie (new)

Kattibrie | 96 comments Just finished a second one! :)

2/5

950-999: The Terracotta Warriors by Jane Portal , finished 23.01

message 82: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (echosashes) | 46 comments This is a great challenge! I spend more time reading nonfiction than anything else. I'm pretty sure I can handle 20.

message 83: by AJ (new)

AJ (ame-less) | 65 comments I'm in for 10! Didn't realize how hard it would be to spread my non fiction reading out. Then i looked up Bonk and Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and they're both in the 610s! So 2 of my 3 for the year already overlap! At least the other non fiction was Asian history so I'm already at 2 down! Once I figure out which 10 I'm going for, I'll add a post.

message 84: by AJ (new)

AJ (ame-less) | 65 comments Here's a hint - biographies are found up and down the dewey decimals! Highly recommend The Professor & the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity & the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary in the 423s! Also enjoyed Katherine Graham's, but that may be a DC read, but it is in the 070s! Personal History

message 85: by Robyn (new)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 169 comments I'm at 1/6. Here's a copy of my comment where I mentioned it:

600-649:
The End of Your Life Book Club (number 619.a bunch of other numbers lol) -- 1/17/13

thanks :)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 169 comments Just curious -- the rules do not state that there is a page number requirement so I assume the length of the book does not matter?

I was thinking poetry for this section of Dewey, but what did you think of this book? Reading more Gaiman is on my to do list.
