I would like to nominate A Death in the Family for Tennessee, sounds really interesting, won a Pulitzer after all :) Although Faulkner and Flannery are also perfect choices.
For Mongolia:My Mongolian WorldThe Secret History of the Mongol Queens: How the Daughters of Genghis Khan Rescued His Empire
Invisible Cities would be OK too.
Just a note about Invisible Cities, which I have read recently. It is a spectacular book. However, if you are looking for a book with insight into the Mongolian culture, this is not it. In the book, Marco Polo and Kublai Khan are in Khan's palace talking about cities they have known. It is more of a fantasy book. I'm certainly not trying to dissuade anyone from selecting it, I just wanted everyone to know what it is and what it isn't.
For Mongolia, I would like to read The Gray Earth, but I'm not sure if it is necessary to read The Blue Sky first to understand it.
