I'm so going to read it. The Last Star Fighter meets Ender's Game. Oh, yay!

How could there be anything bad about that? :D
I don't consider myself a video gamer - I prefer my games on boards, set on tables, surrounded by real people. However, this book brought back such vivid memories of arcade games I played in the 80s. I lived in a very small town and for 3 1/2 months of the year I could hike over to the little shed behind the ice cream stand and play Donkey Kong or Ms. Pacman or that extremely generic pinball machine that I knew just how to get TILT on, when no one was around to play Life or Monopoly with me.
I think it is telling that so many people feel the same nostalgia reading this book. Life in the OASIS is so sterile comparatively. And how much do I hate that because I listened to an audiobook I had to go make sure that OASIS was spelled properly. ;)

(There have been a few exceptions that I don't mind audio for, usually really long books or historical fiction;

I like how creative the quests have been. I'm enjoying the 80s nostalgia but sometimes it feels like a bit too much or too contrived or pointed. Like some references are brought up just to be brought up and others feel organic and meaningful.
Oh, Cathie, I really want to read both of those books you mentioned in #254. I don't really "do" audio books because it's harder for me to lose myself in them but I want to read those two in paper. One of these days I will try some audio for when I want to do some cleaning but I still haven't remembered to look for anything at the library.

Discussion Questions for Chapters 6 - 10
(view spoiler)

I did not see that coming! (view spoiler)

I never thought Aech was a bad guy, I was just suspicious of what Aech *might* do in the future...potentially get jealous of Wade and sabotage things somehow or possibly betray Wade. But, they've been friends for so long (I'd forgotten how long until I just read a certain part) that it wouldn't make sense for Aech to betray Wade. And I still haven't finished this so I don't know yet what the future holds for Wade and Aech. I'm hoping we get to meet Aech in person by the end. Art3mis, too.
With all the secret identities in this book, I feel like I suspect everyone for at least a minute.
All of the talk (in the book, plus some of the 'real games with people vs OASIS living') of real-life vs what their avatars are like reminds me of the time I spent playing World of Warcraft. I made a lot of friends in that game and while it was a virtual world, those friendships were and are genuine, with real people. I love that about the online world. Sure, you can meet someone who is a facade but ultimately, I think there are a lot more people out there who are just themselves enhanced. Me, I'm introverted and shy in the real world but online, I'm more open and able to express myself better because I have more time to formulate my thoughts here as I type.
Some of my best friends are a group of women I met on an online forum for military spouses back in 1998. I've met some of them in person and some I still want to meet but the bonds are real, the friendships are lasting and meaningful, regardless of how we met. I find it easier to make friends online because you can discuss things you might not discuss with someone you've just met in person, you can find common interests with people you may not be able to find them with in person for whatever reason, and you might make friends with someone who is completely against everything you expected in a friend but that bond is so deep that you are able to overlook those differences. In person you have such a short time to make an impression, it's easier to give up on someone with differences from your own.
I use "in person" rather than "in real life" because in real life, some of my friends are people I happened to meet online. Being online did not make them any less real life.

I'm at 13% and love the book already. I'm totally hooked by a great, meticulous world-building, some technology descriptions that are delivered in an understandable way and interesting characters' building (Wade seems to be a male counterpart of Cinderella :)). The Hunt seems to be designed to keep committed only those really devoted gunters and I like the idea that 5 years had to pass for anyone to find the first clue.
I'm fascinated by OASIS, but also scared to what extend it took over real life interactions. On the other hand, if the real world is an unbearable place, what is left?
I'm coming back to reading, and as I read more, I will read some of the above comments and try to give my ideas, as I don't want to spoil my fun of discovering things right now :).

Discussion Questions for Chapters 0 - 5
1) What do you think of Ernest Cline's vision of the future? Is it realistic or far-fetched? Why, or why not?
It is actually a plausible scenario. There were many multimillionaires who started from high school like Halliday in the 90s. And there was a time when virtual reality was the next big thing in the 80s. The concerns about the environment remains and the threat of limited oil reserves are present.
2) First impressions of Halliday? What did you think of his Invitation? If you were a billionaire and had no friends or family, what would you do with your money when you died?
Halliday is rich and therefore eccentric but lonely man. I actually felt sorry for him, to live like that and die alone. The Invitation seems his last bid for glory, he is trying to control his image. But he sets this crazy hard challenge to find someone like himself, maybe to continue the business or validate his views. In order to win, you would end up thinking like him.
My legacy if I were a billionaire would be to leave money to various charities- orphanages, hospitals, struggling schools, missionaries under care of trustees.
3) I love the term "gunter," hehe. Would you participate in the hunt? Or would you be inclined to think it was all a big hoax?
Gaming isn't my thing, I would leave that for the die-hard fans.
4) I'm also loving all of these video game references. I grew up playing old PC games and Atari with my Dad. Do you have any favorite video games (childhood or otherwise)?
Not really a video game person, I tend to like Tetris. The speed games I sucked at, poor hand eye co-ordination.And never interested in combat games. Can you tell I'm a total girl.
5) Seems like Wade's had a difficult life so far. Thoughts? He appears to be very resourceful - I thought his hideout was pretty neat.
Wade seems like a likeable character. He is perspective given how he was raised and he is a loner. So it seems obvious that he would seek to escape reality in the video game. I too like how resourceful and smart he is.
6) What do you think of OASIS (loaded question, I know)? It's much bigger than I imagined (with jobs, real estate). What is your favorite part? Mine is definitely being able to access fictional worlds (such as Middle Earth or the Firefly Universe). Do you think it is well-imagined?
OASIS.... has become the "real world" but a virtual one. The possibility to explore new worlds are endless, you can explore any fictional world, set up business, play games, watch shows. All things we do now, but for many who are poor, access is still limited. It really is just a reflection of the life - it doesn't level the playing field. Plus no-one really gets to know who you truly are. You can invent yourself as anything. And for these last reasons I don't like it.
7) Can you see the appeal of escaping a world in crisis? What are the consequences of doing so?
We all seek to be comfortable and at ease. Even reading of books can be an escape from our reality. But to hide means issues remain unresolved.
8) I can imagine everyone's frustration over IOI's planned takeover. I wouldn't want ads or a subscription fee, either. What do you think of the "Sixers," as the gunters call them? Will they be threats later on as the search continues for the egg?
Sixers are interested in the bottom line- making money. They want to capitalise on the best and most popular enterprise. They will likely want to sponsor or somehow influence the winner of the egg for their own means.
9) Do you think we will ever meet Art3mis the blogger? What are your impressions of her (if you have any)? What do you think of Aech?
Art3mis seems like Wade love interest. We will definitely meet up later. She is one of the top players. Wonder if she ends up helping or a rival for the egg.
Aech- sounds like a rich guy who likes Wade due to their common interest. But they aren't really that close. I wonder if he is a rival, not sure I fully trust him. Could be an avatar for Halliday.
10) What did you think of this first section overall? Are you hooked?
I am enjoying so far, intrigued by the world and Wade. He is the underdog with some many obstacles but lots of gumption. I love how he never really complains about his lot, just tries to do the best with what he has.

I'm still reading, too. I am almost finished, though. Determined to complete this tonight. I just haven't come to comment much in the past few days because I read in bed and then the next day I forget what I read about and have other things to take care of so I don't get much time to post.
Well, I'm on part (Level) 3 and almost finished! I like (view spoiler)

Just started. Just finished chapter 2 and i am loving it. I was in High school in the 80's and i am having fun....

I loved that part. (view spoiler)

I didn't like his aunt she such a jerk but I have to say he is a smart boy.

I'm glad I read it but it isn't really something I would read again or consider to be a lifetime favorite.

11) Do you find Wade's obsessive dedication to the egg hunting commendable or sad?
I'm undecided, for a gunter it is commendable. But to be obsessed like this seems sad.
12) If gunters don't share anything related to the egg with each other, what do you think they talk about on message boards?
Based on what happened in Basement, they just chat about games, movies they liked and why. Spout and show off who knows more about whichever game/movie they are into.
13) Okay, this one isn't a question - I just had to acknowledge that you can sign up for Quidditch as a school sport in OASIS. That is all.
14) What did you make of Halliday's hiding place on Ludus? What does it say about him that he (appears to have) wanted a student to find the Copper Key?
Makes me think he was trying to pick someone who is poor student, in a way he is looking for someone like himself to win. After all, once you remember where you come from most people try to help out those in similar situation.
15) Did you expect things to play out the way they did in the Tomb of Horrors? The image of Wade playing Joust with Acererak was incredibly bizarre, which fits with Halliday's eccentric personality, I suppose.
No, a joust was unexpected. Didn't think it would be so easy for Wade. It's almost like it was tailor made for him.
16) Did you expect that someone else had found the Tomb first? Do you trust Art3mis? Now that she has a Copper Key of her own, do you think she and Wade be running into each other more often on their quest?
I thought Wade was first. Didn't expect anyone else got there first but it is from Wade's POV. Not sure if I trust her, but she seems on the level so far.
There are in competition so expect to see them often. Actually looking forward to it.
17) What will things be like for Wade now? What will his relationship be like with Aech? Will he still attend school?
The smart thing is to continue as normal. Wade is going to be a celebrity and I think he is smart enough to weed out some of the fakes. Aech and I will still be friends but the dynamics will change as they are now also rivals. Wonder if this will hold or will they mirror Halliday and Morrow ?
18) What do you think is beyond the gate?
Another game

I'm still reading, too. I am almost finished, though. Determined to complete this tonight. I just haven't come to comment much in the past few days because I read in bed and then the next..."
Hi Teresa, I thought you had finished since you didn't comment again. Sorry to hear you were ill. Can't quite view your spoilers yet. I see that you are not much of a gamer but enjoyed the story. I think that shows that Ernest Cline is good writer- able to engage even non gamers.

Hope you are enjoying this, June!

19) What did you think of the WarGames simulation as Wade's quest? Have you ever watched a movie so many times you feel like you can quote it line for line? If so, what movie(s)?
Actually I thought it was a great idea, and fits with someone being obsessed. I have never watched a movie to that extent. Guess, I'll not gunter material.
20) I'm not surprised GSS created Flicksyncs after finding out about the simulation. If you could jump into a movie or TV series and play through it, which would it be?
Think Star Trek or Fringe would be interesting to play in.
21) First impressions of Ogden Morrow? What did you think of his interview with the press? Will he be a factor later on in the book?
Ogden was Halliday best friend but a regular guy. Wants job but also wife as well. I think the fall-out was over his wife and/or the OASIS vision. He is more practical of the two. And he recognised what he loved in terms of work and stuck with it.
I loved that interview, Ogden has spunk and truly wants to help whoever is hunting for the egg. Think he is warning them to not become as obsessed as Halliday. And he will definitely play a role later on in the book.
22) Now Aech has the first key and gate. Will Wade regret helping Aech with the key? Will their friendship continue to hold up despite their competition?
For Wade it is all about helping a friend, even if he turns out to be a rival. I don't think he would regret it. From Wade end, it seems like it may hold but he wouldn't be surprised if it ends. Think losing his parents makes it easy for him to expect others to abandon him.
23) Am I the only one who thinks these endorsement deals are a bad idea? Isn't it a bad thing for his avatar's face to be plastered everywhere? On the other hand, it looks like the money he'll earn might save him in the real world.
I agree that endorsement is a bad deal from my point of view. But that is how fame operates.
24) What did you think of Sorrento? Did you find any of his offers tempting? Do you think Aech or Art3mis will sell out?
Sorrento is the bad guy here. He is arrogant, selfish, immoral. That scene where he walks to his office with Wade- somehow reminded me of Gestapo or evil military general. And definitely heartless. I found none of his offers the least bit tempting. If I were diehard fan, none of these would move me. Don't think Aech or Art3mis will sell out.
25) Were you as surprised as I was that IOI had unearthed Wade's identity and location? Did you think Sorrento was bluffing with the explosives?
I was surprised but then there are a ruthless company. I was thinking they had hacked his system or track his OASIS account from the email. Never imagine the actual way they got the info. No wonder conspiracy theorist always give false info.
I wanted to believe he was bluffing but didn't think so.
26) What will Wade do now? It looks like he'll be hunted in both realities. How will he handle the deaths of those in the stacks?
I'm not sure. He would definitely need to stay off the grid and use false info once on OASIS. Once IOI realize he is not dead, the hunt will be on. Oh, man.
I think Wade will feel responsible even though he only got on well with Mrs. Gilmore. Not to mention he has to extremely careful.

27) Is it possible that Sorrento's already gotten to someone in the "High Five," as Art3mis puts it? Or are the members too smart for that?
It seems more likely that one of them is a spy/ double agent. Still not sure who it is yet. I was surprised that no-one read the emails. I mean we are all curious so I expect someone would have looked. Unless they are much older and wiser than Wade.
28) First impressions of Daito and Shoto? Were they what you expected?
I expected them to be Asian given their names. That they were Japanese is not surprising, makes sense. My sister is into anime, so she has kept me in the loop. And the word otaku gives you an idea of how the Japanese can also be obsessed with pop culture.
29) What about the disturbance in the corner of the chat room? Did IOI break into it somehow? Or is something else going on?
There must be a hacker. One of the High Five may have left a trace for the Sixers. Or someone is trying to get an inside scoop to get insider info to solve the next clue.
30) It looks like things are headed to an all-out war between the Sixers and the gunters. Who do you think will reach the Jade Key first?
Still rooting for Wade to get there first.
31) Were you surprised at how easy it was for Wade to create a new identity and set up a new home? Do you like his new place and new gear?
It did seem ridiculously easy, but he has money now. Still, it seems easy to crack. But he did use an underground connection. The gear sounds impressive even for a non-gamer like me. But he is completely isolated and I don't like that part. I know he is terrified.
32) What do you think of Wade's decision to stay inside until he finds the egg? What does it say about him that he avoids interaction with any human being whatsoever?
Wade is terrified of the Sixers and I can't blame him. They are ruthless. He is also having trust issues. Except for Art3mis.
33) What did you think of the chat between Art3mis and Wade? Why do you think Art3mis is so reluctant to reveal anything personal about herself?
Wade is crazy about her and is willing to risk it all. This means if she is the spy/double agent, Sixers can find him if she squeals. But I'm trying to decide if she has as low self-esteem as Wade. She too feels like no-one can like her because of her appearance. But I wonder if her reluctance is due to not being sure if Wade is a Sixer- after all he did have a meeting. Or if she is not on the level.
34) Do you think Wade was too obvious about his feelings for her? Do you think Art3mis is manipulating him in any way? Or does she perhaps not trust him to care about the real her?
Wade is young and it's his first love. And I respect guys who are honest. Even if I don't reciprocate. I don't know if she is trying hard not to look like she is manipulating him or just being extra cautious.
35) What did you think of Ogden's dance party? Surprised the Sixers crashed it? And what about Og's lightning superpower? That was pretty neat.
It seemed strange party to attend. I was surprised that they would attack but the Og's superpower was awesome. But with the scene with Art3mis and these questions I'm now really starting to wonder about her.
36) Book quote:"I was just another sad, lost, lonely soul, wasting his life on a glorified videogame." What do you think brought about this realization? Will this change anything to have admitted this to himself?
The breakup with the weight gain and the times to look around the apartment and view himself has really hit home. I;m glad that he is aware and decided to change diet, exercise. I hope this translate to his life in general.
37) Now that we are roughly halfway through the book, what is your overall opinion of it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?
I am really enjoying this book. Don't think I would have read it without seeing all the glowing reviews on GR.
For me Wade life seems to mirror Halliday in terms of the recluse lifestyle, obsession. But yet, he yearns for relationships- Aech his best friend and Art3mis. He has been alone for so long. The quest, while it will provide fame and money, causes too much of a sacrifice. I'm curious as to when Morrow will appear again. And I'm curious that Aech chooses to model Morrow. Is this a clue? Is Wade= Halliday and Aech= Morrow?

38) What do you think of Wade's stronghold planet Falco? If you bought your own small planet on OASIS and designed it and furnished it yourself, what it would look like (or be modeled after)?
It thought Falco would have more surface detail amd I didn't expect people to know the details. The fact that he choose an asteroid with subterranean area shows how scared he is of the Sixers.
For me, Earth is all I know and I think it is pretty amazing. But minus pollution, poverty etc. And put in the dinosaurs and extinct animals.
39) Do you find the "voyeur channels" - the option for every avatar to have his or her channel - realistic in terms of where our television industry is headed?
If you think about youtube and instagram, it would be easy for the voyeur channels to arise. And he was right that the second-list celebrities would use and the porn industry.
40) Do you think Wade has gotten carried away buying expensive weapons, clothes, transportation, and furnishings? Do you think he'd need a full-time job if he didn't buy such things? Or does he need good ships, weapons, etc., for safety?
At first it seemed excessive, but it sounds brutal in the virtual world and the Sixers are ruthless. So, to maintain his habits and be safe he has to have a full time job. After all, he was poor before. The never-ending cycle we all know and wish we could get off.
And now we know why celebrities don't have money!!!
41) What will the significance be of the quarter from the perfect Pac-Man game? Did you expect something specific or significant to happen after he completed it?
It may be a key part in getting the egg since nothing seemed to happen after he completed it. Which was surprising. I thought that it was related to the Jade key at first.
42) Do you think Aech will regret helping Wade with the Jade Key? Will they repair their friendship?
This shows that Aech is really a friend, even though they had been fighting. I don't think he will regret it. And it seemed to provide the way for Wade to apologise.
43) What did you think of the Zork simulation as the challenge for the Jade Key? Having played Zork, I loved the reference, but I think it defeats the purpose of the game to have everything visible around you.
I don't know the game. I don't think this part was meant to be too difficult. But I'm surprised given the Joust in the beginning.
44) Were you surprised Sorrento was the first to reach the Second Gate (and shortly afterward, the Crystal Key)? And what about Wade's "plan" to jump off of his apartment building should IOI find the egg first? Wow.
I was still rooting for one of the gunters to get there first. And it was surprised Sorrento got the Second Gate and Crystal key so quickly. Guess they have someone who knew how to crack the riddle quickly.
I can't believe that Wade would consider the jump. I know that people get involved, but to be so wrapped up to the point that you think life has no other meaning. Can't relate.
45) How did you react to Daito's death? Did it shock you to find out it was real?
Shocked, disturbed and angry. I can't believe the extent the Sixers would go to. Just reinforces what happened to Wade and how lucky he was. It highlights how vulnerable gamers are when they isolate themselves and live primarily in a virtual world.
46) What did you make of Shoto's story? I found the idea of hikikomori very sad. What about Shoto's new motive - revenge?
From what I have learned from my sister re Japanese culture, I was not surprised about the hikikomori. But regardless of how obsessed we become, we still yearn for relationships. I too thought they were brothers and like Wade I was surprised to learn they only knew each other online.
Shoto new quest- typical Japanese culture. He would want to honor his "brother".
47) How did you like the 3-D Black Tiger simulation? We've talked about favorite games, but if you could jump into any video game or PC game this way and play it, what would it be?
Not sure.
48) I wonder what the robot is for… Any thoughts or ideas? What do you make of the clue for the Crystal Key? Wade seems to have already figured it out.
Since we have done videogame, movie it maybe a favorite music group/band logo. Truly am clueless.

Discussion Questions for Chapters 27 - 31
49. The clue for the Crytal key says the gate cannot be unlocked alone. What do you think that means?
Halliday obviously wants people to work together. I'm glad at this development actually.
50. Are you surprised Wade decided to come up with a plan that involved the other members of the High Five after working solo for so long?
More surprised it came so quickly. But Wade felt too isolated and was in need of getting his friends. Plus they worked with each other from the beginning.
51. Wade was so nervous about going back outside after so long, he was shaking. Do you think he will be able to change after taking IOI down?
I think he has changed already. It just seems so sudden a change. Ernest Cline had me agreeing wholeheartedly with the evils of the system and the need for change and now I'm gripped by this part. And agreeing.
52. Did you think Wade was crazy for going into IOI?
Crazy and impulsive. I kept wondering why this drastic change, supposed he gets caught. But it is a ballsy move.
53. Did you suspect that IOI was spying on the High Five?
Based on the interview with Wade and Sorrento I'm not surprised. Just the level of info they have is scary. Makes me concerned about my data online.
54. So, Art3mis has a birthmark. Do you think that was why she was hesistant to get close to Wade or do you think it was because of the hunt for the Easter egg?
Once I saw that everything made sense. I no longer suspected her of any ulterior motive. She has probably been teased about that birthmark. And thinks she looks ugly. And honestly, I'm relieved.Couldn't be happy if she was working for IOI or selfish.
55. IOI had the least amount of info on Aech. Why do you think that is?
Aech is probably mobile. And was smart enough to put as little info as possible.
56. Do you think Wade is still thinking about winning the prize or does he have other things on his mind now?
Any gunter still would be trying to win. Seems he is about to level the playing field. And keep his friends safe.

57) What did you think of Wade's plan to email every member of OASIS and invite them to join the fight?
Wade is truly the hero of this story. He has come a long way. The only way to fight the Sixers is for all the gunters to unite. Shows ho resourceful Wade has always been.
58) Did Ogden's appearance in their chat room surprise you? What did you make of his offer of help?
It made sense. I was suspicious about that bump, but when the Sixers didn't use any info from it, I wondered who else it could be. Relieved it was him and now he can help. It is like Halliday made him a trustee and he is being faithful.
59) Were you shocked at Aech's true identity? What did you think of Wade's reaction?
Shocked. Glad it was a black girl. It shows that Wade isn't shallow. He processed it quickly, and the emotions were true- shock, anger. The acceptance was quick. Think I would still be adjusting.
60) What did you make of Aech's story?
Plausible and true. Because of past experiences, blacks give less info and that saved Aech. Her family reaction is not unexpected, but sad. It happens for being pregnant. Not everyone can handle the ramifications. It seems to reflect on the parents.
61) Were you surprised at how many gunters showed up outside the castle? That all of them chose to fight?
I thought a few would come. But the support and the willingness to fight was unbelievable. Just shows how much people hate the Sixers. And restores some hope in people. After all, it meant that they wouldn't win.
62) What did you think of the battle? Did Shoto's sacrifice surprise you? What about Wade's decision to go after Sorrento instead of escape inside the castle?
The battle was great. I was more surprised that Wade stood up for himself and his family. Not sure I pictured him like that. But he is the hero and everyone has to fight at some time. But Shoto- definitely would have gone after Sorrento.
63) So, talk about a shocker - were you surprised the Catalyst came back into play this way?
So diabolical and childish. At first I thought it was related to the game, which would make sense. But to use the Catalyst, crazy!!!
64) What do you think will be Wade's final test?
Another game. Not sure what else.

65 - Did you like Wade's decision to split the money with Aech, Art3mis, and Shoto? Do you think any of them would have done the same?
They all deserved it , I'm glad he decided to do it.
66 - What did you think of the game Tempest as the first step of the Third Gate? What about Monty Python and the Holy Grail as the second step?
Good thing he had help from Art3mis to get the extra credits to complete the game. All the time I was thinking, hurry, hurry, Sorrento is behind you. They chatted so much about the Monty Python that I guess it had to be in there. Never watched but it sounds funny.
67 - Do you think a Sixer would have been able to solve the last puzzle, would have figured out the password to the computer?
Don;t think so. Think you would have to know that he was in love with Kira.
68 - What did you make of Halliday's advice to Wade?
Great advice. Pity it took Halliday so long to figure it out. But he may have had autism.
69 - Did you like Art3mis's and Wade's meeting (and happy ending)? Was it what you expected?
I liked the ending. It was fitting for 80s geeks.
70 - What will happen next in Wade's world? Will he ever use the Big Red Button? Will Sorrento go behind bars? And will things finally start to get better?
Wade will probably spend less time in the OASIS, he will probably marry Samantha, make OASIS free so that those who need it can access it. As celebrities, he already has the book, so maybe a movie deal. And he and Samantha will try to complete her dreams of feeding and helping the less fortunate.
Aech, Shoto and Og will remain key features in his life. Who knows, they may make Oregon their base. I don't think he will need to use the Red Button.
Sorrento will end up in jail for a while, with IOI undergoing further investigation. The corporation will be split up under new management but not be as powerful as it was.
71 - What did you think of the book overall? Any thoughts you'd like to share? What will you rate it?
I like it, there were some slow parts for me- in the games competition. I loved the references to most 80s pop culture. But it dealt more with the ills ad good about virtual reality. I would not be surprised if it ends up as a classic. It definitely lives up to the hype.
I rate it 4 stars.

1) What do you think of Ernest Cline's vision of the future? Is it realistic or far-fetched? Why, or why not?
It was actually pretty close to realistic because during the 80s the computers era was beginning to be a popular thing and of course virtual reality would be a big thing too.
2) First impressions of Halliday? What did you think of his Invitation? If you were a billionaire and had no friends or family, what would you do with your money when you died?
I feel Halliday was a rich man who had too much time on his hands and probably grew up being a geeky gamer because he was a loner and didn't have friends so playing was a major part of his life. It must have been sad to be him. If I were a billionaire I would split it among all my kids and family members but also to children charities.
3) I love the term "gunter," hehe. Would you participate in the hunt? Or would you be inclined to think it was all a big hoax?
I don't know. I use to play games but not to the point that I'm obsessed so I wouldn't be inclined to participate.
4) I'm also loving all of these video game references. I grew up playing old PC games and Atari with my Dad. Do you have any favorite video games (childhood or otherwise)?
I use to love playing Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Astros.
5) Seems like Wade's had a difficult life so far. Thoughts? He appears to be very resourceful - I thought his hideout was pretty neat.
Wade seems like a nice and smart. He seems to be a loner too since he also doesn't have family except for an aunt who really doesn't care about him, which is sad, but I guess thats why his computer games are important to him.
6) What do you think of OASIS (loaded question, I know)? It's much bigger than I imagined (with jobs, real estate). What is your favorite part? Mine is definitely being able to access fictional worlds (such as Middle Earth or the Firefly Universe). Do you think it is well-imagined?
OASIS? wow! Really well imagined. It's like a real world within the computer world. It seems like there is nothing that you can't do from your seat except or I hope actually eating and using the bathroom.
7) Can you see the appeal of escaping a world in crisis? What are the consequences of doing so?
I can see the appeal of escaping but only temporarily like with my books but not like Wade because it doesn't fix any of the problems.
8) I can imagine everyone's frustration over IOI's planned takeover. I wouldn't want ads or a subscription fee, either. What do you think of the "Sixers," as the gunters call them? Will they be threats later on as the search continues for the egg?
Sixers are interested in winning the money and everything that comes with Halliday's enterprise at all cost.
9) Do you think we will ever meet Art3mis the blogger? What are your impressions of her (if you have any)? What do you think of Aech?
I think Art3mis is going to be Wade's love interest and will eventually will see her but I don't think that she will be anything like her avitar.
Aech seems to like Wade because they have the same interest. But I wonder if he is a rival or is going to be a rival.
10) What did you think of this first section overall? Are you hooked?
I am definitely am. I can't wait to see whats going to happen and if anyone will actually win the big egg.

11) Do you find Wade's obsessive dedication to the egg hunting commendable or sad?
It seems sad to be so obssessed.
12) If gunters don't share anything related to the egg with each other, what do you think they talk about on message board?
I guess they try to chat about games, movies things they like because there really doesn't seem that they can't talk about everyday life since their life is all about the virtual world.
13) Okay, this one isn't a question - I just had to acknowledge that you can sign up for Quidditch as a school sport in OASIS. That is all.
That was just funny.
14) What did you make of Halliday's hiding place on Ludus? What does it say about him that he (appears to have) wanted a student to find the Copper Key?
It was like he was finding someone that is like him.
15) Did you expect things to play out the way they did in the Tomb of Horrors? The image of Wade playing Joust with Acererak was incredibly bizarre, which fits with Halliday's eccentric personality, I suppose.
No at all.
16) Did you expect that someone else had found the Tomb first? Do you trust Art3mis? Now that she has a Copper Key of her own, do you think she and Wade be running into each other more often on their quest?
Thats what I thought. I'm not sure about her but I think she is hiding something and I think she is going to run into Wade a lot more because she seems just as smart as Wade.
17) What will things be like for Wade now? What will his relationship be like with Aech? Will he still attend school?
I think things are going to change for him even though he might try not to.
18) What do you think is beyond the gate?
Of course another game. It all seems to be one game after another.

19) What did you think of the WarGames simulation as Wade's quest? Have you ever watched a movie so many times you feel like you can quote it line for line? If so, what movie(s)?
It reminded me of a movie called WarGames. It was reaaly weird how that worked out.
20) I'm not surprised GSS created Flicksyncs after finding out about the simulation. If you could jump into a movie or TV series and play through it, which would it be?
I'm going to go with Sleepy Hollow.
21) First impressions of Ogden Morrow? What did you think of his interview with the press? Will he be a factor later on in the book?
Yes, I think Ogden is going to be a factor later since he knew Halliday and might want a part of all the money too but also is concerned for those who are chasing the big win.
22) Now Aech has the first key and gate. Will Wade regret helping Aech with the key? Will their friendship continue to hold up despite their competition?
I don't think that Wade would regret it because I'm sure he's smart enough to get his own or maybe Aech would do the same for him.
23) Am I the only one who thinks these endorsement deals are a bad idea? Isn't it a bad thing for his avatar's face to be plastered everywhere? On the other hand, it looks like the money he'll earn might save him in the real world.
I agree. It can be dangerous for them.
24) What did you think of Sorrento? Did you find any of his offers tempting? Do you think Aech or Art3mis will sell out?
I don't like Sorrento. He seems to be a bad guy and I hope Art3mis or Aech don't sell out but I don't think they will even though it is tempting.
25) Were you as surprised as I was that IOI had unearthed Wade's identity and location? Did you think Sorrento was bluffing with the explosives?
Not at all surprised because they seem to be very equiped with high end stuff but I also think they have money to buy anything they want. I really did think that they were bluffing about the explosives and was really shocked when it happened.
26) What will Wade do now? It looks like he'll be hunted in both realities. How will he handle the deaths of those in the stacks?
I guess he will go into hiding but still continue with the game but he needs to be careful because once they find out that he isn't dead they will try again. I'm not sure how he will handle the deaths of those that he lost. I'm thinking he'll do something later in the story.

27) Is it possible that Sorrento's already gotten to someone in the "High Five," as Art3mis puts it? Or are the members too smart for that?
I think anything is possible.
28) First impressions of Daito and Shoto? Were they what you expected?
I thought they were of Asian decent and really think that they are related like they say because of the way they protected/defeneded each other.
29) What about the disturbance in the corner of the chat room? Did IOI break into it somehow? Or is something else going on?
It may be IOI breaking in or someone who is spying on them to get information.
30) It looks like things are headed to an all-out war between the Sixers and the gunters. Who do you think will reach the Jade Key first?
I'm cheering for the underdog (the gunters)
31) Were you surprised at how easy it was for Wade to create a new identity and set up a new home? Do you like his new place and new gear?
Not really since he has money now and the virtual world. I have to say its a little impressive but still lonely.
32) What do you think of Wade's decision to stay inside until he finds the egg? What does it say about him that he avoids interaction with any human being whatsoever?
Well it wasn't a decision that I would have made but I guess he's still scared and not good being around others so it didn't surprise me.
33) What did you think of the chat between Art3mis and Wade? Why do you think Art3mis is so reluctant to reveal anything personal about herself?
I see that Wade really likes her and might give the game to her but I just hope that she isn't the spy. But I think that she is hiding something more about herself but not really sure what it is. I wondering if she's rich or she has a deformity or maybe the spy.
34) Do you think Wade was too obvious about his feelings for her? Do you think Art3mis is manipulating him in any way? Or does she perhaps not trust him to care about the real her?
Yeah I think he jumped the gun with that but because its Wade first love interest and he's socially awkward that he doesn't know how to play it cool so it must have made it more weird for Art3mis and the fact that he really doesn't know her made her react to his declaration of love. I can understand Art3mis' reaction about him liking her for the real her and not her avitar and she might not trust him either. She might think that he is playing with her feelings as a ploy to win.
35) What did you think of Ogden's dance party? Surprised the Sixers crashed it? And what about Og's lightning superpower? That was pretty neat.
I thought it was weird and the surprise crash wasn't a surprise to me. I knew that was going to happen. I doesn't seem to be anything they don't know. Wow on Og's superpower. Art3mis is starting to make me wonder.
36) Book quote:"I was just another sad, lost, lonely soul, wasting his life on a glorified videogame." What do you think brought about this realization? Will this change anything to have admitted this to himself?
I hope so. It made me sad to see him realize this and was happy that he decided to change his ways.
37) Now that we are roughly halfway through the book, what is your overall opinion of it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?
I am really liking this book and glad I finally got to it. I hope that the book ends with Wade finding a real life outside the virtual because he might end up alone and a sad hermit like Halliday. I also want to know more about the Sixers.

I'm in 45% and I love the way the action is getting the pace. We have the first break through in the quest for the Egg and I really like Art3mis. So far, I think she is my favourite character, although Wade gained a lot in my eyes when he refused IOI's offer despite their threats. I will definitely read more as I'm totally gripped by the plot. :)

I have to say there is a lot going on in this book. Wade has balls to do that because if it was another person they probably would have gave in just from fear and then after what happened, I would be so nervous that they would find me.

I loved this book, one of the best books I have read and definitely my favourite this year :D
The ending was only partly surprising, but I love the way various parts of the plot finally came together, especially the RL meeting of the High Four (I really am sorry that Daito was killed).
I love the themes of 70s and 80s incorporated into the story. Not everything was obvious to me, as I'm not a game geek and I'm not American, but still I found that I recognized and even well-knew some of the movies, sitcomes, cartoons, tv shows and music pieces mentioned in the story. :)
The writing was excellent, with clear language, but many helpful descriptions and great world-building. All in all, it is a highly recommended read, not only for gaming fans :)

I am loving the writing style, which is gripping and nostalgic at the same time. I am not and have never been much of a gamer and neither am I in the US but despite that I have read/seen/heard about the stuff that is mentioned in this book, which makes it awesome for me as well. Truly enjoying the book!

I loved the vision and world building. I did not find it far fetched, especially given that energy resources are an issue even today. I also loved the idea of stacks of mobile homes, it is very imaginative.
2) First impressions of Halliday? What did you think of his Invitation? If you were a billionaire and had no friends or family, what would you do with your money when you died?
I thought Halliday to be an interesting person, albeit a little whimsical maybe? I think the invitation was really creative. It got me hooked onto the book and what would happen next. I think if I were in Halliday’s position, I would like to give it to a good charity that I am supporting or one that I know will do the right job.
3) I love the term "gunter," hehe. Would you participate in the hunt? Or would you be inclined to think it was all a big hoax?
I would probably think it to be a hoax but would still participate. Guess I am crazy that way! Lol
4) I'm also loving all of these video game references. I grew up playing old PC games and Atari with my Dad. Do you have any favorite video games (childhood or otherwise)?
I am not much of a gamer and have never been interested in video games. However, I do remember doing endless sessions of Pac-man as a kid. I used to just love those monsters! However, the mentions of these video game references are making me nostalgic!
5) Seems like Wade's had a difficult life so far. Thoughts? He appears to be very resourceful - I thought his hideout was pretty neat.
Yes Wade does seem to have led a harsh life. I found it especially bad when his aunt takes his laptop away to be pawned for money. However, I believe that when you face harsh realities in life, you become resourceful. I guess his upbringing has made him that. I loved his hideout as well.
6) What do you think of OASIS (loaded question, I know)? It's much bigger than I imagined (with jobs, real estate). What is your favorite part? Mine is definitely being able to access fictional worlds (such as Middle Earth or the Firefly Universe). Do you think it is well-imagined?
As I said earlier, the world building in this book is simply fantastic, whether it is the real world or the virtual one of OASIS! I loved how everything is simulated and can be accessed. I love the fact that you can teleport yourself from one place to another, saves time and money, don’t you think? I loved the various planets that have been created based on various video games. I think that is most creative.
7) Can you see the appeal of escaping a world in crisis? What are the consequences of doing so?
I think all of us escape reality at one point or the other, using many ways. Therefore, yes I can see the appeal but it is also equally pertinent that reality cannot be avoided totally. A person escaping reality is in danger of losing focus that this escape is temporary and may fall prey to that appeal of escaping and forget the real world totally. That I believe could cause some problems.
8) I can imagine everyone's frustration over IOI's planned takeover. I wouldn't want ads or a subscription fee, either. What do you think of the "Sixers," as the gunters call them? Will they be threats later on as the search continues for the egg?
I don’t like the Sixers at all! It is intrusive and unethical. I believe that they will cause some problems later, especially if someone else finds the egg or the keys.
9) Do you think we will ever meet Art3mis the blogger? What are your impressions of her (if you have any)? What do you think of Aech?
I hope we do meet Art3mis as I am really curious to see how she is and how Wade and she, if they meet get along. With regard to Aech, I am really uncomfortable with him. I guess it is because we know so little about him. I wonder whether he will remain a true friend or may turn into something else, given that Wade is the hero of the book. I hope he remains true but I shall be looking at him with caution.
10) What did you think of this first section overall? Are you hooked?
I loved this part! And yes I am hooked completely!

11) Do you find Wade's obsessive dedication to the egg hunting commendable or sad?
I find it really commendable! It takes perseverance and a lot of effort to make your dreams come true. Given that Wade is living a miserable life, having a dream, which can take him away from this is a commendable one and he is doing everything to realize that dream. SO I am really glad for him.
12) If gunters don't share anything related to the egg with each other, what do you think they talk about on message boards?
I think they just like to tease and taunt each other and have fun. Often I believe conversations are used to see what the other person knows and to see if it is of any use!
13) Okay, this one isn't a question - I just had to acknowledge that you can sign up for Quidditch as a school sport in OASIS. That is all.
Yes I read that too and actually wondered about it. Was it just a salute to Rowling in passing or did it mean something more? People here aren’t of the magic, so how would Quidditch come into play in a non magical world?
14) What did you make of Halliday's hiding place on Ludus? What does it say about him that he (appears to have) wanted a student to find the Copper Key?
I think it was a masterpiece of an action. I believe that Ludus was, as rightly seen, the last place that gunters would search and yet he places it there. True genius. I think it was because he started out the company as a student, he believes that a student can achieve great heights, if they set their hearts to it. Hence, I guess it’s a great move.
15) Did you expect things to play out the way they did in the Tomb of Horrors? The image of Wade playing Joust with Acererak was incredibly bizarre, which fits with Halliday's eccentric personality, I suppose.
Yeah I guess it did. After all Wade is the hero of the book and its high time he got a break in his search, especially after he cracked the part that the key was hidden in Ludus itself!
16) Did you expect that someone else had found the Tomb first? Do you trust Art3mis? Now that she has a Copper Key of her own, do you think she and Wade be running into each other more often on their quest?
No I didn’t suspect that. Yes I do trust Art3mis. Despite her being a competitor, I think she will play straight unlike other gunters. I think we will see more of them coming together on these quests. It will be interesting to see how things play out between them.
17) What will things be like for Wade now? What will his relationship be like with Aech? Will he still attend school?
I don’t think he will be able to attend school. Things would have definitely changed for Wade, given that every gunter is aware of his finding the key and the gate. I think Aech will be jealous and might cause problems for him, although I am not sure. I hope not but I don’t think any gunter can actually be a friend to another gunter!
18) What do you think is beyond the gate?
Another world or planet to explore?

It is totally amazing how much knowledge is required to complete the quest. I was under huge impression observing Wade and others' devotion to study various areas of pop culture and Halliday's life to achieve their goal!
