66 - Me too. I love that movie. I'm glad, too, that there was finally something Wade hadn't perfected (in Tempest). It seemed like everything up until now had been so easy for him, so I'm glad he was challenged here.

67 - I agree.

68 - I thought so too.

69 - Very sweet. I was really happy for them.

70 - I think in order for things to get better, though, they'll have to convince people in OASIS to log out and make things better. It'll take more than money.

71 - I loved it, too! I didn't even vote for this one, so I'm really glad it won.

Ahh, I know! And guess who narrates the audiobook version of this? Wil Wheaton.

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments From Wikipedia:

Ten months after the first edition release, Cline revealed on his blog that Ready Player One itself contained an elaborately hidden easter egg. This clue would form the first part of a series of staged video gaming tests, similar to the plot of the novel. Cline also revealed that the competition's grand prize would be a DeLorean.

The contest's final stage was announced on August 1st, and was to set a world record on one of several classic arcade or Atari 2600 games. This was completed on August 9th by Craig Queen, who set a new world record in Joust. He was awarded his DeLorean on the TV show X-Play.

Pretty cool, huh?

65 - Did you like Wade's decision to split the money with Aech, Art3mis, and Shoto? Do you think any of them would have done the same? Yeah, I liked that. Nope, I don't think any of them would have, but who knows! Lisarenee is right - you can't spend that kind of money if you try.

66 - What did you think of the game Tempest as the first step of the Third Gate? What about Monty Python and the Holy Grail as the second step? I loved that they included Monty Python. That scene with the coconuts is the best.

67 - Do you think a Sixer would have been able to solve the last puzzle, would have figured out the password to the computer? Oooh, good answer, Lisarenee!

68 - What did you make of Halliday's advice to Wade? I thought it was a little overkill; we got that message a ton of times already. I did like how the robe transferred from Halliday to Wade and that Wade became his "real" self before disappearing.

69 - Did you like Art3mis's and Wade's meeting (and happy ending)? Was it what you expected? I agree; predictable but nice.

70 - What will happen next in Wade's world? Will he ever use the Big Red Button? Will Sorrento go behind bars? And will things finally start to get better? I feel like Wade got elected President or something! No, I don't think he'll have to use the button. Yes, Sorrento's done for. I think things are already getting better.

71 - What did you think of the book overall? Any thoughts you'd like to share? What will you rate it? I really liked it. I bought this for my gamer brother last Christmas and never expected to read it myself and like it! I think it could be a great movie. I had a dream about it last night and even that was pretty cool.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Discussion Questions for Chapters 20 - 26

38) What do you think of Wade's stronghold planet Falco? If you bought your own small planet on OASIS and designed it and furnished it yourself, what it would look like (or be modeled after)?
His stronghold sounds very Batmanesque. I really don't know what my stronghold would be modeled after. I'll have to think about that.

39) Do you find the "voyeur channels" - the option for every avatar to have his or her channel - realistic in terms of where our television industry is headed?
Definitely. It sounds like some of the anyone can stream internet sites that are out there right now. If you can think it it exists on the internet.

40) Do you think Wade has gotten carried away buying expensive weapons, clothes, transportation, and furnishings? Do you think he'd need a full-time job if he didn't buy such things? Or does he need good ships, weapons, etc., for safety?
Some of it was needed, but not all of it. A lot of it he seems to have gotten from various quests and such so it doesn't seem like he spent that much. I would think he would be smart enough to think of some sort of business model to use his popularity for money more then he is though instead of having to hold down a 40 hour a week job.

41) What will the significance be of the quarter from the perfect Pac-Man game? Did you expect something specific or significant to happen after he completed it?
I think it will play a large role in some part of the quest chain to find the egg, I just don't know when. Maybe it's a later task that he solved early? Or a side task? Something special that only "the one" will figure out?

42) Do you think Aech will regret helping Wade with the Jade Key? Will they repair their friendship?
I don't think he'll regret it. Now that they are even, so to speak, I think they have a chance at becoming friends again. But who knows. I think Shoto and Wade will get closer for sure.

43) What did you think of the Zork simulation as the challenge for the Jade Key? Having played Zork, I loved the reference, but I think it defeats the purpose of the game to have everything visible around you.
I've never played Zork so I didn't get the reference. I did know about the Captain Crunch whistle though, although I didn't get to the reference on my own. I was never really into text based games.

44) Were you surprised Sorrento was the first to reach the Second Gate (and shortly afterward, the Crystal Key)? And what about Wade's "plan" to jump off of his apartment building should IOI find the egg first? Wow.
I think Wade hit a dark place in his life. He realized that without the egg hunt he had nothing...no friends left, not at the top anymore, nothing good really. If IOI got the egg and took over the OASIS it would be the end of everything he had left.

45) How did you react to Daito's death? Did it shock you to find out it was real?
That was crazy! The Sixers definitely aren't done messing with the lives of the High Five. The fact that they just pulled him out like that and tossed him aside. Impeccable timing too. I wonder how long they had agents stationed outside his apartment. Are they stationed outside all of the high fives' places? Are they all in massive danger right this second? I hopt that Shoto uses the video footage and the info he has to go public about the sixers. The fact that Daito died in game and logged out at the same time should help aid in the proof department.

46) What did you make of Shoto's story? I found the idea of hikikomori very sad. What about Shoto's new motive - revenge?
I hope he gets it! I hope he shows the world what the Sixers are truly capable of!

47) How did you like the 3-D Black Tiger simulation? We've talked about favorite games, but if you could jump into any video game or PC game this way and play it, what would it be?
Another game that I hadn't heard of. If I could jump in any game like that I would jump into Zelda.

48) I wonder what the robot is for… Any thoughts or ideas? What do you make of the clue for the Crystal Key? Wade seems to have already figured it out.
A cool gift? I wonder if "the one" will be the one that chose the right robot. Another small test along the way that seems minor but was actually huge.

38 - Good comparison. Definitely like the Batcave.

40 - I would think his endorsements, his channel, and his auctions of his items would be enough to live on. But he does need some of what he buys, you're right.

43 - It's surprisingly fun and very challenging. My dad was obsessed with it back in his day and so when he managed to load a copy onto our old PC, he insisted I try it.

45 - Crazy, I know!

47 - Ooh, Zelda would be so much fun. For me, it would be this 90s PC game called Heroes of Might & Magic (either II or III). I'd ride around collecting treasure and artifacts and build my army up and then I'd fight bad guys.

49. The clue for the Crytal key says the gate cannot be unlocked alone. What do you think that means?
I accidently read an extra chapter so I know the answer. I thought it meant there was an extra key or artifact. I like the real answer though.

50. Are you surprised Wade decided to come up with a plan that involved the other members of the High Five after working solo for so long?
He didn't really have a choice. At this point it's do or die. Save the OASIS. Beat the sixers.

51. Wade was so nervous about going back outside after so long, he was shaking. Do you think he will be able to change after taking IOI down?
I hope so. It's sad that the real world Sucks so much that everyone is afraid of being a part of the world.

52. Did you think Wade was crazy for going into IOI?
Yes! But what did he have to lose? His life would have been over if he didn't do it so why not go balls deep and do all you can to save the life you want.

53. Did you suspect that IOI was spying on the High Five?
Most definitely. The only reason they weren't killed was that they may help give clues to the eggs location.

54. So, Art3mis has a birthmark. Do you think that was why she was hesistant to get close to Wade or do you think it was because of the hunt for the Easter egg?
Makes me understand why she kept alluding to how hideous she was in real life and how Wade knew nothing about her.

55. IOI had the least amount of info on Aech. Why do you think that is?
Aech is smart. Always on the move. They can't get a lock on his location or his identity because of that.

56. Do you think Wade is still thinking about winning the prize or does he have other things on his mind now?
I think it's just about keeping the sixers from winning at this point.

49 - I hadn't even thought of that.

51 - Very sad. And yet, it sucks so much because people are scared. If people would get over their fear and try to make a difference, things would get better.

52 - Hah, exactly.

53 - Honestly, I was surprised they hadn't been killed earlier, but I guess it does make sense IOI was keeping tabs on their gunting.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Discussion Questions for Chapters 32 - 36

57) What did you think of Wade's plan to email every member of OASIS and invite them to join the fight?
Best plan ever!

58) Did Ogden's appearance in their chat room surprise you? What did you make of his offer of help?
I jumped out of my chair in excitement!!!

59) Were you shocked at Aech's true identity? What did you think of Wade's reaction?
I really didn't know what to expect with Aech so i wasn't really shocked.

60) What did you make of Aech's story?
It made sense. It's sad that even in the future race and gender are an issue.

61) Were you surprised at how many gunters showed up outside the castle? That all of them chose to fight?
Nope. I'd be surprised if they didn't. It's their livelihoods they are fighting for!

62) What did you think of the battle? Did Shoto's sacrifice surprise you? What about Wade's decision to go after Sorrento instead of escape inside the castle?
I expected Shoto to sacrifice him. He was the "extra" so to speak in the group. I was surprised that Wade wasted precious time fighting Sorento when he knew it was worthless. Sorento would just take another avatar and come after them. Those extra minutes could have gotten them in the gate safely before the explosion.

63) So, talk about a shocker - were you surprised the Catalyst came back into play this way?
I should have seen it coming, but I had forgotten about it. Smart move by the sixers really. Wade just happened to get lucky with that quarter.

64) What do you think will be Wade's final test?
I already finished so I cheated.

65 - Did you like Wade's decision to split the money with Aech, Art3mis, and Shoto? Do you think any of them would have done the same?
I think Aech or Shoto would have, at least would have split it with Wade since he was the reason they got that far to begin with. Wade is really the only reason they all got so far with the occasional piece of info from another character. (and yes I know they independently figured out a lot of it...)

66 - What did you think of the game Tempest as the first step of the Third Gate? What about Monty Python and the Holy Grail as the second step?
I knew it was Monty Python after a few words in. Such a famous scene :-) I was never a fan of the Tempest. I was really bad at it.

67 - Do you think a Sixer would have been able to solve the last puzzle, would have figured out the password to the computer?
I don't think so. I think the passage from the biography mixed with the info Og gave Wade before going into battle is what got him to the password answer. I don't think the sixers could have gotten it.

68 - What did you make of Halliday's advice to Wade?
Definitely good advice. Get out and do things in the real world once in awhile.

69 - Did you like Art3mis's and Wade's meeting (and happy ending)? Was it what you expected?
It was a nice little wrap up to the book. Maybe a bit melodramatic. But good.

70 - What will happen next in Wade's world? Will he ever use the Big Red Button? Will Sorrento go behind bars? And will things finally start to get better?
I don't think the big red button will be used any time soon, but maybe someday. Sorrento will go to jail. IOI will be shut down. Shot, Aech, Art3mis and Wade will be friends forever more.

71 - What did you think of the book overall? Any thoughts you'd like to share? What will you rate it?
6 stars! Definitely an amazing read that I will recommend to everyone in the world! Will definitely be writing a review on it's awesomeness when I'm less tired.

58 - I was pretty stoked about it, too.

59 - I liked the author maintained a level of mystery with Aech, and yet didn't really give us a lot of foreshadowing about this reveal.

62 - Yeah, I see what you mean. I understand where Wade was coming from, though, and his need to hurt Sorrento somehow.

63 - I had forgotten all about it, too. I was pretty shocked.

65 - True. I like that they gave him the help he needed in the end, though. He wouldn't have been able to win without them.

67 - I think it was a final test of its own, that password. Not only would have you know virtually everything about Halliday to have gotten that far, but you'd also have to understand him.

38) What do you think of Wade's stronghold planet Falco? If you bought your own small planet on OASIS and designed it and furnished it yourself, what it would look like (or be modeled after)?
I thought it was awesome that you could buy a planet and then create anything you wanted on it. I think I would have modeled mine after a fairy tale like in "Once Upon a Time", but the happy parts.

39) Do you find the "voyeur channels" - the option for every avatar to have his or her channel - realistic in terms of where our television industry is headed?
It kind of reminded me of You Tube a bit. I am not sure that it would last very long if it did happen. I am sorry, but I never understood the whole reality tv craze and I imagine it would be a lot like that.

40) Do you think Wade has gotten carried away buying expensive weapons, clothes, transportation, and furnishings? Do you think he'd need a full-time job if he didn't buy such things? Or does he need good ships, weapons, etc., for safety?
I think that he might have needed some things for safety, but I do think he has gotten a bit extravagent with his purchases. I don't think he really needed the immersion rig and I am sure that cost him a lot of money.

41) What will the significance be of the quarter from the perfect Pac-Man game? Did you expect something specific or significant to happen after he completed it?
I was surprised that the quarter didn't seem to be directly related to the key, but I don't know what I was expecting exactly.

42) Do you think Aech will regret helping Wade with the Jade Key? Will they repair their friendship?
I want to think that they will eventually become friends again. I don't want to think that their relationship is over.

43) What did you think of the Zork simulation as the challenge for the Jade Key? Having played Zork, I loved the reference, but I think it defeats the purpose of the game to have everything visible around you.
I think that it is good for some of these people to get these little glimpses that the OASIS is not truly a world. I didn't think it defeated the purpose of the game, I thought it made it a bit more interesting.

44) Were you surprised Sorrento was the first to reach the Second Gate (and shortly afterward, the Crystal Key)? And what about Wade's "plan" to jump off of his apartment building should IOI find the egg first? Wow.
I was surprised. I keep thinking that there is something fishy going on with how he got there so fast. I didn't think he was that smart. I think Wade wouldn't really jump. I think he was just being dramatic, but if so what a crappy ending to the book that would be.

45) How did you react to Daito's death? Did it shock you to find out it was real?
I was shocked. I didn't expect it to be a real death. I was sad, even though we never really learned much about Daito.

46) What did you make of Shoto's story? I found the idea of hikikomori very sad. What about Shoto's new motive - revenge?
The even sadder thing is that we already see this happening to some extent with World of Warcraft. People sit at their computers for hours and play that game without getting up for food. I hope it never reaches the extent that it does in the book. I don't really blame Shoto for wanting revenge but I wonder how he plans to get it.

47) How did you like the 3-D Black Tiger simulation? We've talked about favorite games, but if you could jump into any video game or PC game this way and play it, what would it be?
I thought it was awesome. I would have loved to jump into any Mario Brothers game. It would be awesome.

48) I wonder what the robot is for… Any thoughts or ideas? What do you make of the clue for the Crystal Key? Wade seems to have already figured it out.
I am wondering if it is some kind of key to the next quest. I don't really have any idea as to the clue for the Crystal Key.

Discussion Questions for Chapters 27 - 31

49. The clue for the Crytal key says the gate cannot be unlocked alone. What do you think that means?
I originally thought that it meant you needed the copper, jade, and crystal key altogther, but now that seems to easy to me. I am not so sure exactly what it means.

50. Are you surprised Wade decided to come up with a plan that involved the other members of the High Five after working solo for so long?
No, desparate times call for desparate measures. I don't think that they really have a choice at this point in time.

51. Wade was so nervous about going back outside after so long, he was shaking. Do you think he will be able to change after taking IOI down?
I think part of it is because his body will have a hard time adjusting, not just because he was nervous. I am hoping that things will change towards the end of the book. It seems so sad that they have no life outside of their computers.

52. Did you think Wade was crazy for going into IOI?
Yes, I would think that it would be extremely difficult to get out once you are in. Not to mention he already had a run in with Sorrento.

53. Did you suspect that IOI was spying on the High Five?
I suspected that they were doing illegal activities to win, but I wasn't sure if they were spying in game. I knew they would have been doing survelliance outside of the game if they could.

54. So, Art3mis has a birthmark. Do you think that was why she was hesistant to get close to Wade or do you think it was because of the hunt for the Easter egg?
I think it may have been a bit of both. It is hard to trust someone that you have never met in person.

55. IOI had the least amount of info on Aech. Why do you think that is?
I think it is because he is so mobile all the time

56. Do you think Wade is still thinking about winning the prize or does he have other things on his mind now? I think he really wants to win the prize, but I also think that he is trying to get back at IOI and keep the OASIS and money away from them.

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Discussion Questions for Chapters 32 - 36

57) What did you think of Wade's plan to email every member of OASIS and invite them to join the fight?
I thought it was a brilliant plan. He knew from personal experience that all of the gunters would not want Sorrento and his team to win the contest.

58) Did Ogden's appearance in their chat room surprise you? What did you make of his offer of help?
I somewhat suspected something like him eavesdropping from the moment the comic books hit the floor earlier in the book. I think that it was very fitting that he decided to help given the circumstances.

59) Were you shocked at Aech's true identity? What did you think of Wade's reaction?
I never saw it coming. I think that it was a very good testament to the ability of others to overlook race and gender. I know our country still has a long way to go in both directions, but it gives hope that there are people out there willing to overlook these things.

60) What did you make of Aech's story?
I thought it was interesting.

61) Were you surprised at how many gunters showed up outside the castle? That all of them chose to fight?
No, it was somewhat predictable that there would be a big turn out and a showdown.

62) What did you think of the battle? Did Shoto's sacrifice surprise you? What about Wade's decision to go after Sorrento instead of escape inside the castle?
Well he wanted revenge, and I knew that only three of them would actually be able to enter the gate so Shoto seemed like the obvious choice to stay behind. He also wanted revenge for Daito.

63) So, talk about a shocker - were you surprised the Catalyst came back into play this way?
I was shocked. I had actually forgotten all about the Catalyst.

64) What do you think will be Wade's final test?
I have no idea. There are so many possibilities.

Discussion Questions for Chapters 37 - end

65 - Did you like Wade's decision to split the money with Aech, Art3mis, and Shoto? Do you think any of them would have done the same?
Yes, I thought it was very fitting. I would hope that they would have done the same if it had been one of them. I am not sure that in the real world, the same thing would have happened.

66 - What did you think of the game Tempest as the first step of the Third Gate? What about Monty Python and the Holy Grail as the second step?
I never played Tempest but I remember it. I thought the Monty Python and the Holy Grail part was classic. I remember watching that movie as a kid. I thought it was hilarious.

67 - Do you think a Sixer would have been able to solve the last puzzle, would have figured out the password to the computer?
I doubt it. It sounds to me like the information Wade got from Og about Halladay's love for Kira was not public information. It could be guessed at but it would be really difficult.

68 - What did you make of Halliday's advice to Wade?
I think it was just one more way for him to make sure that the person truly understands that the OASIS is not reality and maybe the world would be better off without it.

69 - Did you like Art3mis's and Wade's meeting (and happy ending)? Was it what you expected?
Everything about this book has been somewhat predictable. I knew it was going to happen but I still liked it.

70 - What will happen next in Wade's world? Will he ever use the Big Red Button? Will Sorrento go behind bars? And will things finally start to get better?
Part of me wishes that Wade would use the button. I think that it might be the only way to get the addiction away from the OASIS and for people to focus back on the real world. I sure hope Sorrento gets behind bars and stays behind bars. I am interested in a sequel that tells what happened to the world in the future. I want to know if they solved the energy crisis.

71 - What did you think of the book overall? Any thoughts you'd like to share? What will you rate it?
I thought it was interesting for sure. I remember some of the games and all of the movies mentioned in the book. Probably because my parents were poor and didn't let us have video games in the house as a child. I don't think it is a five star book for me as I don't think it is the most fabulous book I have read all year. I think a movie of it would be interesting and I would definitely go and watch it.

Yay, you finished! *happy dance*

59 - Agreed. It was a huge surprise for me, too, and I loved Wade's reaction.

63 - Me too. I wasn't really sure what had happened at first and had to reread that section a few times before it registered.

70 - Me too! Most people have answered that Wade won't use the button, but I don't really see how the world will improve unless people step away from OASIS. And how will people do that unless they are forced to? I personally don't see them choosing to on their own.

71 - A movie would be interesting. I'm having a hard time envisioning it and I imagine it would look very different than my imagination. I wonder who will direct it.

BUDDY READ REVISIT! BUDDY READ REVISIT! BUDDY READ REVISIT!

This topic is open for discussion of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Be prepared for SPOILERS

Book synopsis:
It's the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.

And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune--and remarkable power--to whoever can unlock them.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday's riddles are based in the pop culture he loved--that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday's icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes's oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.

And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.

Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt--among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life--and love--in the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments I know that one reason we aren't sure of a start date is because one of the interested parties has it on hold but isn't sure when it will be ready.
