Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments Yes, we did. I took them in from vets' offices, private people, even the pet store (when people would bring them in there). We took in two litters of Rattus rattus (roof or "black" rats) also (domesticated rats are Rattus norvegicus, also known as sewer or "grey" rats), one from a pet store and one from a vet. At our peak, we had about 115 of them.

9:33 a.m. EST, just finishing with the e-mail, and then back to reading!

So sorry to hear of your loss, Kyle. We had to put down our beloved collie of 14 years a year ago, and we finally got a new puppy in August. You need time to grieve. *hugs*

12:55pm and checking GR after being off awhile. Just signed our 2013 taxes and put it in the mail--getting a nice refund. (Yay!) Reading a lot today. Doing laundry, plan to cook later which will be fun.

Good luck Dan, and great news Janie!

Decided to pop in and leave some notes for my review of this book, update my status, and clear out my e-mail while I am here. I also wanted to see if it was warm enough to go sit outside; the sun looks very inviting, but it's not even 50 degrees and just too chilly. I think it's supposed to warm up next week, we'll see.

Bought some books while I was out. I got World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War and 999: Twenty-nine Original Tales of Horror and Suspense. Both books look awesome. Oh, and I bought some music too. I got Rise Against:The Sufferer and the Witness. Rise Against is an awesome band!

Need it, 'cause it's cold tonight and I'm still groggy from my nap. Anyway, I'm also feeling sleepy, despite only having woke up around 11, so I think I'll be crashing soon, too. NO idea why I'm feeling so sleepy, usually this is my awake time. LOL...I've fallen asleep with my contacts in so many times. Not by choice of course, my optometrist did warn me about falling asleep with them in. Luckily nothing has happened when I have done that.

What are "Gas-permeable" conatacts? I only have two pairs of contact lenses; the regular ones I wear every day, and the hand painted yellow and red theatrical ones that I wear on Halloween.

message 1473: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments I don't know if they even make gas-permeable contact lenses anymore now that toric lenses are so well designed, but back in the Dark Ages when I was in high school, my astigmatism combined with my high prescription made it impossible for me to have clear vision with soft lenses, and hard lenses... well, they're nasty. So my optometrist put me into gas-permeable lenses, which are sort of inbetween. They're not quite the size of a person's iris, so they tended to pop out quite easily, but and they were quite rigid, so they held their shape and provided clearer vision than a more flexible soft lens. They were SO uncomfortable, and I was always losing the stupid things!

I spent several years working as an optician, so I learned a thing or two about contact lenses, in addition to what I already knew from my own use. Anyway, while it is not advisable to sleep even in soft lenses unless they are specifically designed for such, having it happen occasionally is not too big of a problem unless you don't clean them well enough. The thing is that a person's cornea doesn't have any blood vessels directly running into it, and it absorbs oxygen straight from the air, so if you tend to keep them covered up, they will eventually because oxygen deprived, and that's why they say not to sleep in your contacts.

A fun trick for a night on the town is to find someone who works in an optometrist's or ophthalmologist's office and have them pick up some of the dye that they use to test the fit on gas-permeable or hard contact lenses and dye regular contacts with it. They will then glow under black lights, but will not harm your eyes (although your vision may have a weird tint to it until you become accustomed to it). My first ex-husband discovered that after I helped him become an optician, too. We used to do this when we went out to comedy clubs... really amusing.

Anyway, I'll talk your ear off about optical things just like I will about cats or rats or books, so I best sign off now... I think it's time for a nap!

3:12 a.m. EST gonna take a nap, I think.

10:43 a.m. EST Just woke up about 20 minutes ago, feeling much better. But there is this horrible smell I keep smelling--this has happened before. I'm wondering if it is a hallucination, 'cause my husband can never smell it, but it makes me feel really sick to my stomach. Katy, I don't think they make them anymore because I have astigmatism too and the gave me toric lenses. That's a lot of info you've go there. I suppose I'll have to be more careful from now on. That's very interesting about the dye. If I want funny colored eyes though I have my Halloween contacts...LOL.

12:36pm here. Going to go take a shower and then clean my room. I heard that there is a Walking Dead marathon on AMC today, so I'll probably be watching that while I am cleaning.

message 1482: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments Dan, I had an experimental pair before I had the gas-permeable lenses; they had a hard middle and soft edges, and were fairly comfortable, but as it turned out, the soft part started shrinking and caused major damage to my cornea, resulting in my having to wear my glasses for several days until they healed. I'm sure you could find gas perms if you really wanted them, but I know the torics are really good now. My last pair of contacts before I had the surgery in 1991 were torics and they worked great. I'm sure the resulting 20+ years has seen major improvements. :-)

2:27 p.m. EST just returned from the Outback, where I had the best rib-eye steak I've had in absolute ages! Wish I could have eaten the whole thing, but I haven't been eating much lately so I could only manage about 2/3 of it. Hubby ate the rest, along with two salads and two bowls of their really yummy French Onion soup. He's now sitting here like a python on a rock digesting... :-)

Chris, I hope you're feeling more yourself soon. A 3 year-old and snow--sounds wonderful! I often felt my children helped center me when times were tough.
