Is she spayed or declawed? Up to date on shots? Catnip is a wonderful tool of amazement for cats. Maybe a scratching post if she isn't declawed.

Chris (cbrunner11) | 674 comments Thanks Janie my night got really busy and time did actually seem to move for a change. I was thankfully home at 9:45.

Dan, I can understand being depressed, I hope things brighten for you soon, and know if you need to talk I'm here for you. Sometimes venting helps me cope with the depression. You are not alone my friend.

11:14PM and my wife and I are relaxing on the couch. Baby girl is sleeping on my chest and cute as can be. Need to wake her up soon to feed her, then bed. So glad I'm off work tomorrow.

Thanks! I'm happy to talk your ear off about cats. Make sure she has a large litter pan with NO cover (apparently that can make them paranoid), and plenty of fresh water. I like to leave kibble available at all times, and then give soft food once a day. It's better for their kidneys than straight kibble. Catnip if she likes it - not all cats do - but no more than once every couple of weeks or she'll become habituated to it. Plenty of toys and interactive activities, like those rod toys with feathers for her to chase. Laser-pointer toys are bad for their psyche, because they can't catch them. Give her time to adjust to her new place, make sure she has high places to go. Mine love to be high. PM me if you have any questions; I love cats.

Sorry to hear that, Dan. hang in there. Watch a silly movie or read something silly, it helps.

8:28AM Had breakfast, Aeverie settled in with his breakfast as well while watching Despicable Me. I am gonna try to read some more today. I only got 150 pages read yesterday :/

Rachel gratz on your kitty! I love my sweet boy, he is 11 years old soon to be 12. He has dry food available at all times, moist food once a week, as he tends to gain weight fast since he is older. Moist food is good for them because a cat does not drink water like a dog does and they tend to lack water in their bodies and causes the kidneys to work harder. Bandit went through Cystitis because of this. He is well kitty now though but he was in bad shape. So keep that in mind. Above all else enjoy your new kitty! You have a name for her yet?

message 5411: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments My Tiger cat drinks a LOT of water. Not so much as to make me think he's diabetic, but I keep a glass here by the bed and he pops over there every couple hours and drinks up! :-)

12:04 p.m. EDT Erasmus woke me up; he'd been trying since about 11. Finally gave in and picked him up and carted him around a bit, as he likes me to do that. He'll jump up on my shoulder, it's cute. Tiger is sitting on my legs; bored with his box, he's back to clingy now. Did I show you his box? When I received my birthday package from my mother-in-law, Tiger claimed the box almost before I managed to take everything out. Check it out:

Rachel, definitely share a picture of your new baby ASAP!!

Well my vet told me that cats don't normally drink a lot of water, and Bandit does not, so I tend to agree with the vet, and he did end up with Cystitis. So now weekly he gets moist food. The vet telling me about this was enough for me to change Bandits diet. Want to keep him around for as long as I can.

message 5413: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments Oh, absolutely! Tiger drinks way more water than the other cats, that's true. That's why they all share a can of gooshy food once a day. It's not much (it's the Fancy Feast, and with three of them it's not a large serving, which is why I do it every day), but it's enough based on how they all look... :-) My apologies, I certainly did not mean to criticize OR imply you were incorrect, because you are absolutely correct. Cats generally do not drink a lot of water; it's also why I also recommended soft food at regular intervals. Probably a week is about right if it's just the one cat having it all to him/herself.

Oh no no not at all Katy. I know you were not criticizing. Sorry if I gave you that impression. We all love our cats and want what is best fore them. Cats are all different. I know though that Bandit would eat a can a day if he had the chance to. He is already 15 pounds, and does not need to gain anymore weight. He generally eats 9 lives, he loves it, and he knows as soon as I open the cabinet that he is getting it. LOL

Bandit also loves boxes, generally the kind that are to small for him. LOL Or he loves the grocery bags from walmart.

message 5415: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 1870 comments I actually don't feed Gizmo and Pepper wet food. I've tried just for like a treat or something, but they won't touch it. I feed my girls Science Diet or Nutro. Pepper is kind of a fatty, weighing about 11 pounds. Gizmo has always been a bit thinner, weighing about 9 to 9.5 pounds.

message 5416: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments Wow, cats that won't eat the gooshy? O.O Mine love it; Erasmus is such a brat, he always snarfs his down, chases of Tiger and eats his, and then comes to try to steal Fluff's. Since Fluff is the gamma cat, I watch over and make sure he usually has his share, though.

5:24 p.m. EDT Wow, pouring rain. Again. We have lots of this left until that hurricane moves on, I imagine. Still, it helps cool things down. It was rather warm there. Tired, think I'll take a nap.

Watched COMPANY MEN starring Ben Affleck, looking at the effects of 'white collar' unemployment. I think it says a lot about both American and British political systems that the unemployed are consistently demonised, that the fault always lies in the individual and not in a system that always put profit margins before people.

Rachel 10:45 pm

thanks for the congrats and advice everyone! Mattie (short for matilda) is about a year old-she had a litter in her foster home but is now fixed- she has her claws so I bought her a scratching post today- i'm not sure she likes her new litter- I wanted one of the natural ones-it's finely grained but I didn't notice till I got home it has a 'natural' pine scent- might have to get the unscented tomorrow.

the woman at the shelter told me she prefers wet food and I bought a starter kit at the shelter which had dry food as well as several cans of fancy feast which she seems to really like. she's a little thing- and I love her already.

if I can ever figure out how to post pics I will but I have the computer skills of a 5 year old lol

thanks again everyone :D

message 5422: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments Yeah, Rachel, cats generally do not like scented litter. Check out the Cat Fancy website, you can find some great info there. As far as adding a picture here, it has to be somewhere on-line; a lot of the pictures I post up here are on my Facebook page. Right-click on the picture and choose "Copy image URL". To see it in here, you have to do the HTML code to add an image. You always enclose HTML inside brackets, like these < and >. The string for adding an image is img src="(paste the URL code you just copied here)". Put those brackets on either side of that string - the < before img and the > after the last ", and that should do 'er. The only space should be between img and src. The final string should look like this (without the spaces other than noted):
< img src = "URL code" > An image URL looks like this:
http://www.russianblue.org/links/catf...
So, using all the above, you end up with this:

I hope that makes sense!

11:19 p.m. EDT Tried unsuccessfully to take a nap. Have my doctor's appointment in the morning; I'll be quite a mess by then, but doubt I'll have the chance to nap before it. Guess I'll do some editing as soon as I'm done with my e-mail....

11:08PM Wow I am tired tonight. Last night for Aeverie for this week. We will take him home tomorrow. I had a good work out and then did some swimming. I finished Stranger with my Face, by Lois Duncan, it was decent. Working on City of Bones and Flowers in the Attic.

Kathryn wow hard to believe your fur babies don't like moist food. Bandit adores it. I am glad it is not too expensive.

As far as litter goes, Bandit does not care too much which he has. He will use any of them. He tends to use the bathroom outside more than his box though. LOL He thinks he is a dog. He eats their food, wants their treats, scratches at the back door, loves tummy rubs, and plays with the dogs. Gotta love him. G'night GR!

message 5426: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments 3:53 a.m. EDT Very tired. Have set my Cowon to start playing at 10 a.m. EDT and going to try to sleep a bit. When I tried earlier, Tiger chose to go use the toilet RIGHT as I was falling asleep, which meant I had to go hand out treats, then then Fluff wanted some food up on his perch... so then I was awake again. Well, we'll try again!

Lol!!! I'm not a cat person, but very happy that cats are finding good homes with you all. As long as they aren't in mine, my nerves and allergies thank you.

9:03 AM I've been up since 4:45AM and that is early for me. Didn't go to bed till after midnight so I am dragging. Hope to get through this day with as little frustration as possible. Working the morning shift so out of here at 5:30. At this point I am just shooting for lunch so I can leave for a bit. Hope everyone has a good day.

message 5430: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments Chris, you could keep a Siamese or Siberian or Sphynx; all are hypoallergenic. Cats are good for the nerves; nothing like a purring cat when you're feeling a little frazzled! :-)

10:21 a.m. EDT, appointment is in just under an hour, but I imagine I'll be sitting there for a good long time before I actually see her. Sometimes I wonder why they even bother to set appointments; it's just a time for people to show up rather than all at once, 'cause it certainly has nothing to do with when you actually see the doctor. Up in Minnesota, if you sat in the waiting room 15 minutes past your scheduled appointment, you were entitled to complain; the doctors up there respected our time. Down here? *snort* I sat in the waiting room one day for over an hour; then they took me back to the room, where I sat through lunch. I watched my doctor LEAVE THE CLINIC for lunch, and come back almost an hour LATER ... all-in-all, I sat in there for five hours that day waiting for my 11 a.m. appointment, and was seen around 4. Ridiculous.

message 5431: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 1870 comments 9:56 AM. Good morning, GR! Going to read for a bit of Flowers in the Attic. I read some last night, but got sleepy.

Katy, I had something similar happen to me, where I waited almost two hours just to get into the room to see my doctor. Then, I had to wait another thirty minutes just to be seen by him. The bad part was, I was too sick to even care. I was actually happy when they called me out of the waiting room. What really made me mad was, even the nurse and doctor said I was the sickest person they'd seen all day, and the others were there for check ups and shots..you know, minor things. I remember taking my temperature before I left home and it was like 102, but by the time I was seen, it was 104. My doctor was kind of mad no one told him he had an actual sick person to see, and I had sat out there for two hours when I should have been back in bed with meds. Oh, and forget the fact I had to wait like three days for my appointment because apparently at the time, I wasn't "sick enough" according to the girl who answered the phone. Needless to say, she hasn't worked for him in a few years. Lol

10:27AM Had a BIG breakfast and guess what? I am going to go grocery shopping! LOL So much better to eat first then shop. Taking Aeverie home today. And then I get to get my new book shelf and get groceries as well. No book shopping today since while my sister was here I got appr. 20 new books. LOL So I am set for oh idk another week. heh.

Chris I was not a cat person, for no other reason than the fact that I just didn't favor cats. Bandit was for my oldest daughter when she was younger than what Kay is now. Bandit just grew on me and made me like cats. LOL I will always be a dog person, but Bandit made me appreciate cats.

Katy, waiting for appt. are ridiculous which enforces my idea of "I hate doctors and going to a doctor." As long as they are making their money, and a hefty sum at that, they have lost interest in their patients. We have become less important it seems, and it is sad. Now I know not all doctors are like that, but the ones I have seen most assuredly are.

Have a great day everyone!

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments 1:44 p.m. EDT Absolutely INFURIATED. They made me take another test (which I figured they would) and still refuse to give me my breakthrough meds. She insists they did not screw up my test. But listen to this: I had taken my roxicodone AT MOST 30 hours before that first test, but it showed NO TRACES. Today they showed roxicodone in my system, but since they didn't give me any last month, I had been hanging on to the last pills for emergencies, and took it MONDAY. THREE DAYS. THREE DAYS. And it's THERE. WTF?? Something is messed up with their damn testing. And who pays? I PAY. GRRRRRRR. I'm about to say hell with it, wean off the morphine and find a cannabis dealer.

Precisely! Especially as if you lived in Britain your meds would either be free or heavily subsidised, all I'm saying is for medical purposes Cannabis should be an option, then you can decide. Mind herb is not the harmless substance it's advocates profess! I suppose it all depends on THC levels.

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments Definitely. The nice thing about cannabis is that there is no toxicity and no physical dependency. It also serves a healing function on many levels; it would probably replace my depression, anxiety, and anti-inflammatory pills.
