Discussion for Sylvain Reynard's Gabriel series

I read the first one. I liked it ok, but didn't feel like I had to rush out and read the second, which is still waiting on my Nook. This is another one of those books like Fifty Shades, that started out as Twilight fanfic, and I'm still not sure where I stand on people pulling their fics, changing the names, and then making a small bundle off someone else's characters. I'll read them if they look good, but I generally find a way to borrow them, because I don't want to give them any of my money.

I picked up Gabriel's Inferno on a whim when I stopped by my local library and was really surprised that I could not put it down. I finished the first book and immediately went and found the second. I read both books, twice, in a week. I'm still trying to figure out what it was about the books that elicited such a strong draw for me. I can't wait for the third book to be published.
If you've read the series, what did you think?
