Yes, basically they are kind of the same. One character maybe darker than the other one, but they sort of play the same part.
I see similarities, especially Jace & Will, which makes sinse their related. The only thing I think Jem and Simon have in common would be they each have a sense of humor I guess, but other than that they don't remind me of each other at all. For Jessamine & Isabelle maybe their attitudes are somewhat the same, but Isabelle would never betray her family/friends and she likes being a Shadowhunter, unlike Jessamine. Clary & Tessa are both strong characters, but for me they are very different from one another.
Agreed that the characters are very much the same in the clockwork series as in the mortal instrument series, but I have not argument with that. I am certain we're going to find out some amazing ancestral connection between Jace and Will or Clary and Tessa by the end of this series and in the meantime, mortal series was so great that I don't really mind reading it "again" with a few different twists. And must say it's nice to see Magnus again in an earlier incarnation. :)

And if I'm correct but Isbelle commented on her battle scars and said women aren't suppose to look like this and so did Jessamine.
I dont remember exact moments in the books it's been awhile since I've read them lol, but I still think Isabelle, to a certain extent, likes being a shadowhunter despite the scars/danger. And Jessamine completely loathes it. But yes I do see the similarity in their attitudes, which I mentioned above.
Tessa loves Will with her all. She spares nothing for other, not even Jem. All the things happened with Jem is only because Will denied her. Once Will 'accepts' her, she will be back to Will. Even if she can't break her engagement without breaking Jem, her heart will always be Will.
For Clary, Jace is her everything. She can't give Simon her love, although she 'enjoyed' their short fling (she is a teenager after all, just like Tessa with her 'Jem's moment').
They both will fight against injustice, and they both love one person.
Jem and Simon both love each girl who considers themselves as good friends, who gives their hearts to the main male characters, who both got involved in some short romances but failed to keep the hearts of the girls. Jem and Simon are both nice boys. Both don't seem to have enough confidence against the girls they love but eventually dare to express their love. They both have their selfish moments when their relationship with their loved ones involved.
No. With the exception of Will and Jace because they are related.
Jem is more reserved and serious, while Simon is not.
Jessamine is more reluctant to be a shadowhunter and perform her civil duties, while Isabelle embraces her inner shadowhunter, and kicks butt, might I add.
Also, I don't see Isabelle going out, betraying her family for some narcissistic, disloyal, man, who works for the Magister.
Tessa is more rational, plans ahead, and she considers the feelings of others, and how her actions might affect them, while Clary doesn't.
Yeah, Will and Jace are basically the same person, which I find really annoying (although I still like them). If your're going to write a new series, change it up a bit! That's why I hope Tessa will stay with Jem! Otherwise it's just a repetition of the previous series in a different setting!
I think ID has some really great new and individual characters like Charlotte, Henry and Jem. I think Tessa's different to Clary. I like her more, I think she's smarter and got a better personality. I don't see the Jessamine-Isabelle one. Izzy's loyal and strong and proud of being Nephilim. But Will and Jace, definitely, yes, but I think that Cassie Clare might have intended it like that, and Clockwork Prince changes it a bit. But it's still an interesting point and discussion.
I only see similarities in Jace and Will and Isabelle and Jessamine
I only ones I think are even a little similar are Jace and Will.But then I think Cassandra Clare may have been going for that sense the are related.Jem and Simon are almost nothing alike but loving a girl that thinks of them as a best friend and not a boyfriend counts as something in common.Jem is serious and calm and Simon is more of a joker.
Isabelle and Jessamine nothing alike then they seem to like clothes.Isabelle would never betray her family for a selfish man who wants to destroy all her family.Jessamine is very selfish and only wants what she wants and hell with everyone else.Izzy isn't like that.She is loyal and brave with a great devotion to her family and friends and fellow shadowhunters.
Tessa is more look before you leap when it comes to things and is not rash like Clary who jumps in to anything before thinking about it.So no not similar at all.I love them both and both are great characters in there own way.
Yep with a few changes.I think C. Clare likes sticking to her "formula". I've heard some of her characters from her fanfiction days were also similar, though I can't really say this for certain since I haven't read those.
