Greg | 363 comments Having recently finished reading Polar Borealis, Issue 24, February 2023 and Scifaikuest February 2024 (in which latter magazine my poems "hidden from earth's view", "glass shatters" and "Trapped!" appear), I'm currently buddy-reading Red Rising, a so-far enjoyable YA sci-fi novel.

what makes that experimental, Clint?

message 3009: by Clint (new)

Clint | 341 comments Novellas and anthologies are my favorite group reads.

Jason Waltz (worddancer) | 385 comments sorry, I meant, what makes that book experimental S&S?

message 3011: by Clint (new)

Clint | 341 comments There is a mixture of S&S with Dantes Inferno and a, I’m not sure how to accurately state this, a non-traditional telling of the tale. I feared it would be too highbrow, but it is not. My other fear was it would be “in the tradition of Clark Ashton Smith” (which in my unpopular opinion too often means “I busted out my thesaurus”), but it’s not. It is unique and I look forward to more in the line.

message 3012: by Jason (new)

Jason Waltz (worddancer) | 385 comments ok, that's exactly what I wanted to learn, thanks. I too thought this was going to be too highbrow, so was waiting for folks I know to have some feedback. cool.

Looks like an interesting series. I've added the first book, Outlands, to my TBR shelf.

You probably want to start with the first series, with Dauntless.

Thanks Mary! It might take me a little while to get to it because I'll be reading stuff to vote on the Aurora Awards over the next month or so.

After spending almost a month on The Pillars of the Earth, I'm preparing to ... spend almost a month on World Without End.

message 3024: by Greg (new)

Greg | 363 comments Beginning to work my way through the numerous nominees for the Aurora Awards (I'm a member of the fan association that runs them). So far, I've read two works in the Best Graphic Novel/Comic section: The Secret of the Ravens (MG fantasy, 3 stars) and A Call To Cthulhu (humour, 3 stars). Hope to have Cosmic Detective (science fiction/fantasy/crime) read sometime today before moving on to the 2023 segment of the webcomic, Carson of Venus (science fiction/fantasy).

message 3026: by Greg (new)

Greg | 363 comments I didn't read Cosmic Detective just yet after all. But I did read the 2023 segment of Carson of Venus (which btw could be considered sword & blaster, right?) The artwork in Carson is good but the source material isn't great in my opinion - it seems very dated, and I was never a fan of Burroughs.

Since yesterday, I've been reading Pluralities, another Aurora nominee, but in the Best Novelette/Novella category. Not bad so far.

Finished the last couple of Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser books (Swords and Ice Magic and The Knight and Knave of Swords) and decided to mix things up with some SF: Alastair Reynolds's Aurora Rising.

Auston Jenkins (anabolicauthor) | 4 comments About to start reading Watership Down again. I haven't read it in a couple years, but I've always thought it was one of the most underrated fantasy/fiction novels ever written.

message 3036: by John (new)

John Hocking | 25 comments Agreed. It also has to be one of the hardest to recommend novels I know. Trying to convince the skeptical that this book about rabbits has the power and weight of a Homeric saga is challenging.

But if you've read it, you know.

The Robert E. Howard Foundation Press has started releasing its collections as eBooks, so I read Pirate Adventures and started Spicy Adventures.

Clint | 341 comments @Joseph, I’m excited this is finally happening. I think Spicy might be my next read.

They've also released Steve Harrison's Casebook and Swords of the North, with The Early Adventures of El Borak coming by the end of the month, I believe. I'm particularly looking forward to when they release the book of Westerns, and when we start getting the boxing stories.

P. Pherson | 14 comments I think Watership Down is my favorite book....If its not, its up there near the top.

I recommend it a lot but I don't think I win it any sales.

Currently reading three books....

Empire: Country: Empire

Forged in Gold

Pride and Predujice

The first two are for friends trying to get some reviews on their books. but last is an audio version of the book.
