ms.petra (mspetra) Jim, that is terrible news. Now that my girl is away at school, the realities of college life have hit like a ton of bricks. The combination of peer pressure and the freedom can be very intoxicating in so many ways. It is a far different world than when I went to college. This sad situation and the story of the freshman that jumped off the bridge illustrate how important it is to really teach our kids not just the academics, but personal responsibility/consequences/decision making skills. Many of these kids are just unprepared emotionally/mentally for the realities of life.

message 4502: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments We have always tried to give the freedom to our kids to make decisions/mistakes while they are in school. They are real but inexpensive learning experiences. The older they got the more expensive the lessons were. It was sometimes tough to go through, but it prepares them. The community service time my daughter had to put in actually helped her to decide what her college degree was going to be.

That was a good guess, but wrong. Elementary Ed/Early Childhood.

How is it a different world now, and what do you think precipated these changes?

message 4506: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) well first of all, I don't mean every word I type to be taken literally.
That said, I went to college in the early 80's. There were no computers, no co-habitating in dorm rooms, no youtube, no internet, and no cell phones. Although there was pressure to go to college, it wasn't like today when everyone is supposed to go to college. I had the option of trade/vo-tech school or just working and advancing on my merit. It wasn't frowned upon. I am not saying that life was better or worse 30 years ago, because that all depends on an individual's circumstance. However, I do believe that our American culture has lost it's pride in self-reliance and American exceptionalism. Instead of making things, we buy things. Instead of fixing things, we buy things. Instead of digging deep and solving a problem, we throw up our arms or hold out our hands. Instead of helping a neighbor, we ask the government to take care of them. Instead of a hand up, it is a handout. A culture of entitlement has been created and nurtured. IMO, it is contributing to our decline as a nation. That is all I really have to say. I know many of you have a different opinion and I will respect that. Let's just agree to disagree.

message 4507: by Jan (new)

Jan | 241 comments In my opinion, your points are valid. Particularly about the culture of entitlement. In days gone by, people weren't considered an adult until they reached the age of 21. College "boys and girls" slept in separate dorms and were watched over by the house mothers. When the age of consent was changed to 18, most college students were then considered adults and therefore, did not have to be supervised. It opened a whole new college experience. Yes, many things have changed and with it, many aspects of our way of life. This is not to say it's good or bad, but there will always be change and we seem to manage to adapt to it.

message 4508: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Heck petra, I don't think I disagree with a thing. Can we agree to agree?

message 4509: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) yes. :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I'm very full of popcorn, but I think I should eat some real food, too.

It's Popcorn Fest at the Service Center, because Alice, the head of Reference Services, bought seven lb.s of popcorn from a Boy Scout fundraiser, thinking she was buying a big tin, not unpopped popcorn.

I think I'll eat my banana.

I don't disagree with Ms. Petra's comments from last month either.

message 4519: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3598 comments Prawn crackers? Aren't prawns really big shrimp? Those crackers must taste better than they look.

I could do with some of that shrimp toast. All I have in the fridge is leftover chicken salad, which I had for lunch. Oh, if I could have anything right now, I'd be eating fried oysters and prawns and watching waves roll in.

message 4520: by [deleted user] (new)

Prawns are what Australian's (and presumably some other countries) call shrimp. The size isn't important.

The crackers don't taste better than they look. We call them 'prawn chips'. Here they give them out in Chinese restaurants at the beginning of a meal. My kids like them.

I have a really good recipe for gingerbread-chocolate chips cookies. Very good."

Would you be willing to share that recipe?

message 4526: by Jonathan (last edited Nov 05, 2010 10:16AM) (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments No ginger in pepernoten, I think. They're spiced cookies of some sort, but I'm not sure exactly what's in them--cinnamon, maybe, and also something slightly like licorice.

janine | 7709 comments Jonathan wrote: "Getting into the spirit for Sinterklaas?"

message 4529: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Dag Sinterklaas...

So I guess there is some ginger in that pepernoten recipe:

Biscuit Spices

* 30 GRAM CINNAMON
* 10 CARDAMOM PODS, cut open and use inside seed
* 1 PIECE OF GINGERROOT
* 10 GRAM NUTMEG
* 5 GRAM WHITE PEPPER
* 5 GRAM ANIS SEED
* 5 GRAM CORIANDER SEED
* 10 GRAM CLOVES

ms.petra (mspetra) when I was growing up my grandparents in Germany always sent a big tin of Lebkuchen(gingerbread cookie) and Pfeffernusse (spicy little bites with powdered sugar) at Christmas...yummy. My mom always made little buttery hazelnut moon shaped cookies. I love Anise!

message 4538: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3598 comments I have a star anise shrub in my back yard. The stars are all over the ground. I wish I liked the taste of licorice, but I don't. Wish I could share with you, Petra.
