Yay Heidi, and even a bigger YAY to the parents. Congrats to all.
What's going on? How long has she been in labor? how are you getting these updates, or are you at the hospital?
My brother-in-law called last night while I was babysitting to let me know her water broke. Then Mom called around 1 in the morning to let me know I didn't need to stay up (HA! I was already drifting off to sleep... and was then up all night because I was too excited) because they had stopped her labor and gave her something to help her sleep so they could get an early start this morning. My brother-in law's been keep me posted through facebook, and my mom's been calling with updates.
I'm at work right now, and they're in Houston, TX. B-I-L told me at 8:50 "They just started Brooke on Pitocin to make her start contracting and bring on active labor. She's at ~1cm. I should have a better idea of progress in about 45-60 mins. I'll keep you posted." and then Mom called about 15 minute ago to let me know she's gotten her epidural... so it should be any time now.
The highlight of my morning, though, was seeing that my sister got on facebook about the time she got her Pitocin to post "Having a baby today!!!!" Ha ha ha! She's so cute! :)
I feel like I can chime in ONLY BECAUSE I'm about to do this myself, and I'm not judging your sister or her doctor, but I sincerely hope that when I go into labor I'll be allowed to just go through it.
I'm not a fan of drugs or whatever being given to stop things from happening and then more drugs to make it start again. All so the staff could go home and rest?
I'm sure there is more to it than that, that your sister needs her rest in order to get through 8+ hours of labor.
But do you know what I mean here? Or do I just sound like a judgmental asshole?

I think people have to go with whatever works for them. I think moms beat themselves and each other up on these types of things too much when there isn't one right answer, from what I can, anyway. It's like the whole "stay home" vs. "work" mom issue. Moms have to find out what works for them and their families, and too often they feel guilty about their choices because they know someone who did the other thing.
Sally, that's exactly the way I went into labor. Plus, I've heard it's hard to push when you're all numb down there. But altho I swore I didn't want an epidural, by the time I was deep into it, I wanted one oh how I wanted one but it was too late! Ha! And that was my first learning lesson about having kids, your fantasies and reality are miles apart!Heidi - squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
RA, you're comparing stay at home vs working moms to decisions made about labor?

I wish I could delete my earlier post. I just know things are going to happen during my labor I didn't/couldnt' predict.
However she does it is fine.
Gaaaah! I'm such a bitch when pregnant!

Yes, I am comparing them. I'm comparing them because you have two different potential camps, if you will, in both situations and strong opinions that could lead to guilt and divisiveness (sp?). With the labor question, you have some women saying things like "the only right way is to have a natural birth, and that's the right way to do it." And then you have other women saying things like, "I want as many drugs as possible and don't want to feel any pain, and that's the right way to do it." And I think women have to make a choice in that scenario in the same way they'll have to make a choice (if they're lucky, actually, and don't have to work) about working after the child is born. I don't envy either landscape, but I think they're comparable, yes. And I hope women can make the best choices for themselves without feeling as if they might get criticized by someone who made the other decision.
Well, it's all the shoulds. Stay at home vs working moms is one of the biggest Discussions when it comes to moms, with each side hurling guilt at the other. Same with the avid natural birth people (you're not one of them, Sally) who are so self-righteous about themselves. It's kind of like the strong bi-partisanship of the political arena, instead of talking with each other in trying to become a team, everyone's on their side of the fence throwing tomatoes at the other side.
Sally wrote: "I feel like I can chime in ONLY BECAUSE I'm about to do this myself, and I'm not judging your sister or her doctor, but I sincerely hope that when I go into labor I'll be allowed to just go through..."Nah. It wasn't exactly like that, Sally. When her water broke, it was more like it sprung a leak around 10 o'clock at night... a VEEEERRRY slow leak. And they knew it would be a loooong drawn out process no matter what - the water break, the labor pains, etc. Plus, she's pretty much been having contractions for the past several weeks. In fact, she was put on bedrest for a few days and would call me alot because she was BOOOORED! She was so cute in her misery. :)
Keep in mind, by the time they stopped the labor, it was 1 in the morning... and she started getting prepped again around 6.
The people who were sent home to get their rest were my b-i-l, nephew, and mother, though - not the hospital staff. They continued their work, as usual. This is b-i-l's first baby and my nephew's first sibling, so I think they were trying to advise them to get rest because they likely don't understand just how little sleep/rest they'll be getting after the baby is born.
And she's been through this before with my nephew - she has narrow hips and had cracked a tailbone the time before, so an epidural was HIGHLY recommended.. and she followed through with the recommendation.
Ohhh... I just got off the phone with my mother - apparently the first epidural didn't take AT ALL, so they just gave her a second one. Right now she's at 3cm and they won't start doing anything until she gets to 10cm... so it's gonna be a reeeaaally long day for her! :(
:) (but I'll have another sweet baby nephew I can spoil rotten before it's all over with)

See, I knew there was more to it than I knew and I should have just shut up about it.
But I can't. I'm so fascinated with hearing everyone's labor stories and trying to imagine how it'll go for me.
RA, you make a good point and relevant comparison.
Heidi, I wish you were my baby's aunt. But I just know baby Nolte's two aunts are going to be pretty darn giddy themselves.
Before I got pregnant I was pretty into wanting things as natural as possible.
Now that I've endured 25 weeks of colds and flu and headaches and more body aches and pains than I've ever had without medication I'm more likely to not resist painkillers.
But I still don't want much want an epidural just cause I don't want a needle in my spine.
I HATEHATEHATE (sorry Heidi but I do) HATE the needle in my mouth before dental work.
But if they could put something in my vein...
I'm just reaaaaaly hoping I can avoid a c-section. I've got roomy hips (and more, according to my midwife) and I do a lot of yoga, so things should be smooth.

Baby was literally born less than a minute ago. No other info yet... I'm crying, I'm so happy (and RELIEVED that everyone's healthy and well). :)
No name yet or other info except what I was told, which was:(Transcript on phone convo with Mom)
The doctor just walked through the waiting area a few seconds ago. I asked her if they had any news for the family and friends in the waiting area... and
"Do we have a baby yet?"
And she said, "Yes. He was born just a few seconds ago."
No other info yet except sister and baby are well and good.
I can thank my sister-in-law for sending these so quickly!
♥
(with his uncle Mark)
:) sweet.
I'm so in love already, and I can't wait to meet him!
Oh oh OH!!!!!! Look at that new baby boy, I'm incredibly happy for you and your whole family, Heidi!
HA! I just noticed my sweet sister laying in the background, bottom left in all the pictures. I'm sure she's grateful they didn't take full pictures of her just yet. BTW, he was born at 1:11 CST.
I think all kids could have an aunt like Heidi!
Congrats.
Congrats.

If it helps my street cred, I've saved EVERY bit of art I've gotten from kids I've babysat and cousins and friends' children and my nephew over the years - I have a drawerful!
Thank you, everyone! I'm sooo very joyful right now and trying not to think about the fact that I'm not there... because BABY... OMG, YAY!!!♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

I've been trying to come up with a nickname for him... my other nephew, Dylan, is "Wee Guy" (even though he's as tall as me now)
Congrats Heidi! How fun to be an auntie!Aunties get to do all the fun things with the kids, spoil them, feed them sugary snacks that will wind them all up, and then they get to give them back! hehehe ::Big Hugs:: ♥
Right now I am happy to report that my eleven year old tried the "which weighs more, a ton of quarters or a ton of dollar bills?" trick on me, and I did not fall for it.
Right now I'm in my office while everyone is in the hallway checking out a woman's new granddaughter. They keep knocking on my door and saying "come see the baby! come see the baby!"I need to work someplace with more guys.
Right now I'm trying reeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaly hard to focus on schoolwork but I just can't sit still. I need a nap, but I'm also thirsty, achy, and just plain uncomfortable.
I have a feeling this sensation will last for weeks, and probably intensify so I better buck up and do my work.

What? Just go see the baby, RA! Geez!I'm checking a list of award winners to make sure the library has all of them. I missed ordering I Spy Fly Guy
! Noooo!Fly Guy is VERY popular around here, too!
:::orders 12 copies for Fly Guy fans...:::
I printed the application for a library page position. I've been wanting to get a second job for a while now... and I'm thinking this is the one I really, really want. :)
Ooh, that's great, Heidi! The library is a wonderful place to work, and paging is fun, because you get to see all the books. :)
They only have part time positions, but as many pages as I've seen at my library and the others I regularly visit, I don't imagine they'd need me alot. And that's fine... I'm just wanting a wee supplement for the vacation fund. Plus, surprisingly, they've not closed the page positions. This surprises me because the job market in Little Rock right now SUH-HUCKS!!!
