message 301: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I have definitely mellowed.

Good old presentation thrill buzz!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Woot! Yay, Sally!

message 303: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i don't abandon them out of crankiness. actually, the older you get it becomes more like "so many books so little time"

besides, some books are crap even if people say they are not. c'mon, book clubs and oprah have made some really crummy books popular and famous

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments And who are you reading that book for, anyways? If you aren't enjoying it in some way, quit torturing yourself. Stop reading it!

That's an order from "The Librarian."

message 305: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments [just return it to the library in pristine condition and remember, NEVER lay a book open and face down:]

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Bookmarks are our friends! :D

message 307: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments amen. that is a personal pet peeve of mine

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Mine is dog-eared corners, Kevin.

message 309: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments oh geesh, don't get me started

message 310: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) My husband's re-reading the Harry Potter series and I had to make him promise not to dog-ear the hard covers! The man just refuses to use a book mark!

I'm a fan of the magnetic page markers. Bookmarks always fall out and get lost.

Sally, I'm glad your presentation went well!!

message 311: by Julie (new)

Julie | 568 comments Yeah, dog-earing books makes me so Mad!!
I have had to get on to friends for doing that to books they've borrowed.
The face-down and open thing doesn't bother me at all. I do it all the time.

message 312: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments If I own a book I sometimes do the fold-over corners. But I try not to corner-fold to the library books since an Olympian chastised me.

The grade-school nuns were insanely intense about the "face down book" thing. They'd say things like "how would you like to be put face down on a table?" The grade school nuns, um, stretched their analogies a bit too much sometimes.

Right now I'm sitting on the couch, 4:56AM, looking forward to a fairly mellow day followed by the symphony. We're due for that cold rain all day. The afternoon should be perfect for cleaning and reading.

message 313: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i just came in from picking up sticks in the yard and taking Lucy for a nice long walk. she knows when i call he and i have a leash and my ipod we are heading out. had a nice breakfast out and went to the library and now hanging for a bit

JULIE - putting a book face down??? you probably drink milk right out of the carton too

message 314: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I agree with Kevin--if I dont' get into a book I don't finish it. Reading it again sounds like hitting your thumb with a hammer and then hitting it again to see if it really did hurt the first time! If you're time's unlimited and you really feel like there was something important there that you missed, it would make sense, I guess. But who has the time to read the books they want to read? Much less the time to finish a blah book just because we started it.

message 315: by Julie (new)

Julie | 568 comments I do, Kevin, I do.
I also lick all the girl scout cookies so no one else can eat them.

message 316: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Evil. But genius.

message 317: by Julie (new)

Julie | 568 comments Well, yes.
That's my evil-twinness coming out.

message 318: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments does she have a mustache?

message 319: by Félix (last edited Mar 07, 2009 02:08PM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) Well sure, Kevin. Can't you see it?

message 320: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments It's a beautiful, sunny day outside, and I'm on my way to a nearby cafe to study. I suppose it's better than going to the cubicles in the dungeons of Doe Library, but I do not want to study today....

message 321: by Matthieu (last edited Mar 07, 2009 04:32PM) (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments It was 75 today. The snow has melted (for the most part), the night has fallen, and I'm sitting in my dorm room trying to study for the midterms. The air has a certain charge to it... it feels like 1996.

I flew a kite with my roommate today. Haha, I spent most of my day outside. I couldn't stand the idea of wasting such a fine afternoon in the drab corridors of Firestone and East Pyne.

message 322: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments I am suddenly very sad to realize I have never flown a kite in my life.

message 323: by Matthieu (last edited Mar 07, 2009 08:18PM) (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments You've never flown a kite? What kind of Californian are you?! Especially one currently residing in the windy Bay Area. Haha, it's a lot of fun.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I'm just back from another family birthday party, and my niece Tiffany is growing up. Instead of pink cake, it was chocolate and vanilla checkerboard cake with chocolate frosting.

She just turned 11, so instead of My Little Pony and Barbies, she asked for clothes and High School Musical 3 for presents. (Of course, I got her books.) She's almost a TEENAGER!

:::cue shrieking violins:::

message 325: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments Matt: There isn't much room in LA, where I grew up. Can't go 100 feet without telephone wires and palm trees (depending on where you are, I guess). I definitely feel my loss, though. It looks like so much fun! Whenever I've gone bicycling by Fisherman's Wharf/Golden Gate Park, I've seen all these happy little children with their colorful kites....

Jackie: Good call with the books. :D

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Thanks, Nools.

It was crazy weather here, today. It was sunny, then it rained, then it sleeted and hailed. And then it was sunny again, until it snowed....

NOT good kite flying weather. :(

message 327: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments Wow. I didn't even know that could happen. That's more kinds of weather in a single day than I've seen in my whole life. ^^;;

Yay, CA?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That's why people move to California, Nools. One snowstorm too many...

message 329: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments What books, Jacks?

Right now I on in the glider in a messy living room. I slept until 8:30AM today! Last night we didn't return from the (excellent) symphony until close to eleven, when I downed 3mg of melatonin and crashed hard. Today should be very, very mellow. But a neighbor stopped by early this morning to chat, too, which threw me off, but I was glad to see him. Holy crap! It's 10:23AM already!

message 330: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yesterday was so warm and lovely. We took Bo out to the state park, forgetting that first warm day following a snow would mean mud, and lots of it. He was a very happy dog. We let him swim too. He likes to rescue all of the rocks from the river bed, until he's exhausted.
Then he had to suffer the indignity of a bath.
Today is supposed to be warm too, but I'm being lazy...I'll go enjoy it shortly...

message 331: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments 8:30AM with an exclamation point, like that's sleeping in?? Haha, RA, we live in such different worlds.

message 332: by Jackie "the Librarian" (last edited Mar 08, 2009 02:33PM) (new)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments RA, I gave Tiffany:

- Hotel for Dogs by Lois Duncan, which is a much better book than movie. I remember liking it a lot when I was a kid.

- Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Again, better book than movie. Should have been the Newbery Award winner that year, IMHO.

- Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer Holm, about a girl from a big Finnish family living in Washington State at the turn of the century. She's a tomboy who is not ready to turn into a young lady.

And...
- D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, which every kid should have.

message 333: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I haven't read Because of Winn-Dixie but I love her other book, The Tale of Despereaux. I haven't seen the film version yet but I want to! And I heard her other book about the rabbit was awful.

Some people LOVE The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Sarah, but I found it extremely irritating. The tone came across as patronizing to me. I think it's one of those kids books that adults love more than kids do.

Hell yes!

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I'm just home from the mountains/weekend in Denver and I'm pooped. I hit my head hard today getting off an icy lift (thank goodness for helmets or I'd be dead). I have a weird, dizzy, spinny headache. This sucks. I seriously NEED to grade some papers tonight but I'm not going to be able to sit here and look at the computer while the back of my head pounds.

*sigh*

Tomorrow it is then.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I am SO GLAD you were wearing a helmet, Sally! That's awful! Could it be a concussion? Can you call the nurse help line and check, just in case?
I'm worried about you.
*hugs*

message 339: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That does sound like a concussion.

message 340: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I hope you feel better Sally.

message 341: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree Sally, that sounds like a concussion, make sure Sweeter keeps an eye on you.

message 342: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Are you nauseated at all?

message 343: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments Oh, no, Sally! I am a mixture of: (a) envious of what sounds like an amazing weekend and (b) sorry to hear you are hurting! It sounds kind of serious.... I hope you can rest. I'm sure your kids will understand if they don't get papers back immediately?

message 344: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Damn, Sally. Those papers can wait. Are you in that "I need a vacation from my vacation" space? Because you sound like you need a day on the couch...

message 345: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Right now I'm sitting in my very messy room with my boogery six year old son. Apparently he has influenza...with some letters behind it, like "influenza AEF" or something. He was off of school today with his mom, and I'm staying home with him tomorrow.

I don't know how people get by without sick days. I think they're a human right.

message 346: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Uh oh. How do you know it's influenza? And isn't that flu? I have what I hope to be a cold. Weird thing is though I think it's doing something funny to my vision. A little while ago I had this weird shimmery effect going on and then my peripheral vision went blurry on the right side. Now I seem to be back to normal but it really freaked me out.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Sympathies to boogery kid and to Sarah. I send you get well wishes and virtual Kleenex.

Yikes, Sarah, that vision thing sounds alarming. I wonder if sinus pressure can affect eyesight...

message 348: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Thanks, Lori...

A doctor said he had influenza. I just asked my wife...she said "influenza A". I didn't know there different kinds. I guess that's the flu...right?

Vision, Sarah? Yes, that would freak me out.

message 349: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
My sister had "influenza A" this winter. She lost something like 10 pounds.

message 350: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments The "A" strain is the most severe.
