I should clarify...the bat didn't fall from a cedar tree, but from under the cedar shingles on the house where they/we live. I looked up "how do you know a bat has rabies" online and it didn't sound like rabies behavior, but I don't want to take any chances...my wife is calling a nearby nature center for advice. I'd hate to have to get rid of them...they come back every year.

I've heard about a disease affecting bat colonies, some kind of fungus that gives them white noses. Unexplained "White Nose" Disease Killing Northeast Bats
ALBANY, New York, January 31, 2008 (ENS) - State environmental officials and caving organizations are asking people not to enter caves or mines with bats until further notice to avoid the possible transfer of a mysterious new bat disease from cave to cave.

Maybe your bat has that, RA.

There is no such thing as a cute bat!
I hates bats!

Huh...interesting...thanks, Jacks. Poor bats. We don't put netting over the cedar or anything because they're running out of places to live around here, I guess, but Christ, I'm sitting on the deck, reading some TC Boyle, and one flops on the deck..and then when I try to help him/her he/she goes under the gazebo then takes off over the yard...
Right now I'm shouting and doing cartwheels all over the house and sending singing telegrams to everyone I know--I just finished the first draft of my book! After all this time--WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!I just wrote the last scene half an hour ago. It's about 140,000 words. I wish it wasn't 1:30 am--I want to call somebody!! :)
Thanks! I have some transcribing to do, of some old scenes I wrote in a notebook, then it's all going into storage for about a month, then it'll be time to edit. I might go into withdrawl during the month--or maybe sigh a big sigh of relief, I don't know. It's just hard to believe I finally finished it.
Thanks everyone!Ok Kevin--I know I keep saying I want to send you more, then I get distracted. Your book is really good, I want to read more of it! I don't know how you get any writing done with all the stuff you do--it's amazing.
Yeah, Nools, it's my first book. I've had short stuff in magazines and anthologies, once a guy even hired me to co-author a kids series about a superhero he created, that was fun, but this is my first book and I've been working on it for at least three years, maybe more. Wow, it's still hard to believe it's finished. Although, writing the first draft is far from being finished, of course, but the rest of the steps can't happen until the first draft is complete.
Anyway--I appreciate your guys encouragement!!

it is available for open reading (?) I want to read!
Congrats Leslie, well done. I'm available for open reading too if you need another pair of eyes.
Whatever happened to the weather thread? It's POURING in Berkeley right now... but the sun is still very much shining. It's mid-July.
What's going on?!
HUGE DOUBLE RAINBOW! Until it stopped raining like five minutes ago. And another spectacular sunset. Almost as amazing as yesterday's which was the most perfect one I've seen in a long time...It doesn't suck here, Matt. :D
Right now, I'm finding out that Andrew Bird and Death Cab played at the Greek this evening. Three blocks away.I am so miserably out of the loop. Freaking MCATs!!
Wow. Angabel...I don't know what in the hell to say to that, but I doubt "it was no big deal" would be part of the message. Tell me a bit more, if you please, why you'd use that phrase in this context.I'm sitting on the front porch. Gym opens in 55 minutes. Two kids asleep, one sleeping at a friend's. Might go to the Renaissance Faire today, but I doubt it.
this is a sad turn of events! :( I was just in the pool relaxing and had to get out as this subject as too much on my mind! The things some have to endure ...
ha! i just got two kids college paid for with one to go. i am so broke carjackers feel sorry for me and give me gas money
YEARS ago when i wore a big hoop earring hardly no guys hardly did (like 20 years)and fuddy-dud people would ask me "if you have your right ear or left ear pierced, which one means you are gay" i would always answer "well, dunno but if you see me kissing a dude that would be your clue". not sure how the different side piercings matter but i guess they do to some people
Yeah, Kevin, I think it used to be the right side meant you were gay when I was in high school (late '80s).
dangit. that's why the guy at the gas station always called me "hun" and held my hand too long when giving me my change
Are you sure you weren't just in Baltimore?:)
(OK, that doesn't work so well for the lingering hand, but they say "hun" a lot, don't they Sarah Pi?)
i think so because i was humming the main theme to Evita when i went in and i had a sore hip from softball so my walk could have been termed loosely a "sashay"
Do you ever have one of those days when you feel like an animated Disney character/caricature who's so on top of things that (s)he can sing and dance and spin while getting things done? I'm having one of those mornings.
It kind of rocks. :)
to me (today) it is a true Monday - feels like the world is coming in on me or waiting for a bomb to go off ... come to think of it a true repeat of yesterday. ummm... :(
I was checking GR threads, since I have been off for a while. I feel a little sad about some of the stuff.

Welcome bakc - maybe it will be better now! :)

Yes I have, but I never knew how to verbalise it. I will now share in that vision the next time I have that kinda day, Thanks, Heidi
p.s. What character are you?
Hey, Thanks for all the good wishes and congrats!! I appreciate that.
What's open reading, is that like posting it on the internet somewhere and then people read it? I don't think I can do that, because sometimes having something on a website can be considered being published, and after I get it edited, I am going to get an agent and get it published. I already have her picked out, she just doesn't know about it yet. If anybody wants to read passages I could e mail them--just send me a message in my inbox with your email address. That's how Kevin and I started talking about our respective book projects--I would love to get some critque/feedback if anyone wants to.
That would be neat.
By the way, Kevin's book is really good!
