Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I'm soooo confused. I mean, I know you go to Princeton... but. NM. Just ignore me.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Okay, seriously, were you visiting someone there?

message 1907: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Yes. There was a conference/party that I attended... but I was really going to visit a friend.

Heh...that's the library gossip:)

I couldn't translate yours, Jackie!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments According to the website Bunny posted -
http://warriorlibrarian.com/HUMOUR/la...

Te audire no possum. Musa sapientum fixa est in aure means: I can't hear you, I have a banana in my ear.

As for the actual library gossip, it involved talking about a couple of incompetent and/or inflexible library managers, one of whom is a friend of mine on Facebook.

Also, news that we're about to instate library fines for overdue items, and the squawk that went up on the newspaper website when that news came out. This, after the public TOLD us we should have fines, instead of raising the levy rate.

message 1910: by Lori (new)

Lori Latin may be a dead language for itself, but it's still everywhere as a root of Romance Languages. Right? I would have loved a chance to learn Latin.

message 1911: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Linguistic drift is happening as we speak.

message 1912: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It's all like, you know, always.

message 1913: by Lori (new)

Lori So how different are romanice and literary Latin. Love new interesting facts!

message 1914: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Is the literary what the monks used in copying the Bible?

That's exactly what I meant when I said it's still useful. It would've been v. helpful in my French and Spanish classes back in elementary/high school.

It is a dead language, though. It's not the native tongue anywhere anymore. Maybe we should revive it! :)

message 1916: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I still don't get how that no overdue fees thing works. Why would people bring back their materials? How does it work?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments If you don't bring them back after a couple of months, they go into Lost status, and eventually you get charged for the book. Most people bring the books back when they start getting the notices in their email. But it does slow down turnover of materials.

Not having overdue fines saves a lot of administrative costs and accounting headaches.

message 1918: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I guess I can see both sides. I'd get pissed off if someone had a book seven weeks after it was due, and I was next on the list, though, and they weren't penalized for making the rest of us wait.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Yeah, but now we're getting criticized for making library services inaccessible for people with low incomes, especially kids who rely on adults for transportation.
The fines are capped at 5.00 a book, but if you're a kid from a poor family, and you don't get to the library that often, it'd be really easy to run up fines, and have your library card blocked.

I have 4.90 in overdue fines right now. I don't have to pay until I owe 5. That'll be soon.

message 1921: by Julie (new)

Julie | 568 comments I just paid 9 bucks the other day.
How did it get that bad? I didn't think I had kept the books that long.
I don't know how their fees work, though.

message 1922: by Lori (new)

Lori I never owed a late fee in my life til I had Jake. Now it's just par for course. How did this happen to me of all people. We can go up to $15 before our account is jammed. Actually I don't know about that - maybe you can still take out books but you most definitely can't put anything on hold.

Eh, I never owe late or finance fees anywhere, the thought kills me, but with the library I figure I owe them, I'm so glad it's there, it's my donation.

message 1923: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments I am presently trying very hard not to explode into a pink and sparkly mess all over the carpet -- not that my insides are usually pink and sparkly. Pixar made me do it. I am waiting for my roommates to hurry up and watch Up so that I can gush about it. I can barely contain myself, and am presently attempting to alleviate the pressure by embarrassing myself with exclamation points all over Facebook.

message 1924: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Wow. You people are library transgressors. Shame!

I had to pay nine bucks to replace a book, but that was my ten year old's fault. Like Lori, though, I feel better about late fees to the library because of where the cash is going...

I really want to see Up, Nools, but I want to wait until everyone else has gone and the theater is empty:) Your enthusiasm is contagious:)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments my daughter works at my library so she will see when i have overdue books and automatically renew them for me drastically reducing my fines. i very seldom have any on books but HOT PICKS books only give you a little more than a week so i sometimes get fines on them. when i do pay i always say "put this toward the new carpet fund" which no one finds funny except me

message 1931: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I returned books on time yesterday but their computer was down and I got an overdue notice today. Hopefully they'll sort that out.

Somewhere in my mother's house is a paperback copy of a kiddie horse novel that I took out of the San Antonio public library in 1984 just before we moved away.
If they only charge me at the then-rate of 5 cents a day, I owe 25 yrs x 365 x .05=$456.25
That might help with the new carpet fund.

message 1932: by TxLadyForever (new)

TxLadyForever | 190 comments the library here allows you to renew online that has saved me many times BUT there is a limit of 3 renewals!

Right now I'm getting ready to drive down to Denver to go to Water World with my sister.

It's overcast and grey out, with a forecast of thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes, so I think we'll just be buying our season passes and heading over to Las Delicias for lunch.

I'm excited to:
-get out of town,
-see my sister,
-embark on a summer of watersliding
-have green chili rellenos.

message 1935: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Have fun with your sister, Sally! That sounds like the perfect way to spend the day. :)

message 1943: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Right now I am holding my eyelids open with toothpicks and wondering how I'm going to make it to a show tonight without getting in a nap first. I was going to go to bed early last night but my sister showed up and that idea evaporated.
