Félix (habitseven) A perennial problem for me, Librarian.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments If my work computer allowed me to write in the weather thread, I'd write about how stunningly beautiful and summery the weather is today. I have a class in seventeen minutes, the last of the semester for that group. Yeah, they'll be paying close attention...:)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It's hailing here right now. Hailing. :(

message 1304: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It's better than hooting.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Wait a minute! I see some blue sky out there just beyond the rain clouds... I think it's going to be one of those weird days with a different kind of weather every half hour or so.
Hoot!

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments They changed their mascot to the Leopard after the band became popular. Clearly, they have a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor.

Why won't it allow you in the weather thread? I love the weather thread! Did someone sports on it?

message 1308: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments No, my stupid work computer won't let me in threads that have pictures...my comp locks. Jackie can explain why better than me:)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments No, I don't think so...maybe some pictures work and some pictures don't. I can't look at any of the profiles, for example...

Stupid computer. At least it's only at work.

:)

Is that a University policy to block images?

Why don't I know that?

message 1316: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) When referring to a specific institution, yes.

message 1317: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments No, it's not a blocking thing, it's a f--ked up windows thing, I think...

message 1320: by Heidi (last edited May 07, 2009 12:24PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments The university IT dept where I work also blocks some stuff - like FB, myspace (a joke considering no one ever uses it anymore... although I can check both from my cellphone... just can't IM there and do a few other things, like apps), youtube, photobucket... I'm surprised they haven't done it to goodreads (yet). I try to ration my time on here because I don't want to deprive my fellow coworkers of the coolness that is goodreads. The macs are also under this ridiculous scrutiny/bigbrotherwatch - any logins to the hospital server are under these restrictions. My friend said she had that problem when she tried to log onto myspace while she was waiting in the waiting room at the hospital er with her hubby - no myspace, no hotmail (that's another restricted site), no youtube, no facebook... I laughed and told her welcome to my world.

message 1321: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments I wish I could go for a walk right now. The cool night air is shyly creeping in the open balcony door. The campus is most beautiful at night.

message 1322: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Is it not safe? Too much work to do? I stayed at the Claremont there once about this time of year. Great view!

message 1323: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments They say it's not safe. My roommates are endearingly attentive. But I might sneak out later anyway.

message 1326: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Right now I'm back in the coffee shop, grading papers. I'm listening to a playlist called "Mellow Eels" and drinking iced tea. I'm worried all the working out is messing up my metabolism so I'm trying to drink tons of liquids, ideally not diet coke.

Usually the coffee shop is a quiet, reflective place, but they're cleaning something behind the counter and banging pots or whatever together in the process. What the hell?

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments just got home from my future daughter in-laws graduation at BSU, moved her stuff back to our house where she will live until she and my son get married August 15th (after my daughters wedding June 27). got here all moved in and making homemade pizzas. All of this after playing a morning double header. BSU is 1.5 hours away also. Big day

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Sounds both like a happy day, and an exhausting one, Kevin. Congratulations on your future-daughter in law's graduation, and the upcoming wedding!

And, mmmmm pizza!

message 1329: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments Thanks. This is a way our DIL can get used to this town and be here to make the arrangements for the wedding while looking for a job here also. We will prob see our son more as he will come over more with her here. :)

Homemade pizza great!

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments My stepmom is having our family dog put to sleep this morning. Dilly's 20+ years old (I know she's at least 20, but not sure of when exactly we got her) - it's time. Her health is failing her. I'm super sad about this.

message 1331: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) So sorry, Heidi. I hate when that stuff happens.

message 1332: by Heidi (last edited May 11, 2009 07:29AM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I didn't sleep well last night... my sleep was restless, if anything. My brother kept passive aggressively teasing my stepmom y-day and calling her a "puppy killer." Out of all of us, he's bonded the most with Dilly.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Thanks, BunWat. She's had a good life.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Heidi, that sucks. *hugs*

:(

message 1336: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, I'm sorry, Heidi...twenty's a long life, m'am. I went through the same thing earlier this year. We're here for you.

message 1337: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Thanks, y'all. I'm amazed that she's hung in there this long, even. She's always kept a puppy face (she's a schnauzer/terrier mix), so I never could call her our dog. She was always a puppy to me, so spunky and playful and sweet. And in most recent years, she's been the grand old lady. Even visiting dogs seem to respect her.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Farewell, Dilly. You'll be missed!

message 1339: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments We got her from the local animal shelter. Apparently my brother picked her out. She had a brother named Dally, too. I remember asking my parents why we didn't get Dally, too, because it just seemed wrong to separate them. Apparently another family had already taken Dally before they even spotted Dilly. At least, that's what they said.

message 1340: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I never get over losing a pet.

message 1341: by Heidi (last edited May 11, 2009 04:18PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I've been searching for a picture all day. I finally found one:

Dilly

Dilly, Summer 2008 - She kinda looks like a punk rock star.

message 1342: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) A beautiful girl.

message 1343: by Heidi (last edited May 11, 2009 04:34PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments My stepmom (a former journalist) wrote an obit for her:

Dilly died Monday at Markham Heights Animal Hospital in Little Rock following a lengthy illness. She was (we think) 17 years old. She was preceded in death by her cousins Bella, Buddy, Coco, and Dixie. And probably by her brother, Dally.

Dilly was adopted at the age of seven months from the local animal shelter. She was known for her lackadaisical toilet habits and, in her youth, her propensity to escape from the front door – once with Brooke (note from Heidi: my younger sister) and a Chinese dinner in hot pursuit.

She was a “live and let live” dog, preferring to sleep through a home burglary and completely ignored interlopers, including an uninvited rodent and assorted visiting canines. She preferred the company of humans, especially if they had ready access to food.

Survivors include her human family and canine cousins Halsey, Bear, Lucky, Robby, Chewy, and Buddy Love.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests all to hug their puppies and consider a donation to their local animal shelters.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I love that she slept through a burglary, Heidi!

But, "a Chinese dinner in hot pursuit"? I think there's something wrong with that sentence. I'm picturing Dilly getting chased down the street by General Tso's Chicken!

message 1345: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments My sister had just paid the chinese delivery guy... and Dilly bolted out the door. She chased Dilly for 5 blocks until she caught up with her, food and change still in hand. It was a funny moment. My dad thought the Chinese delivery guy had kidnapped my sister because both she and the food went missing. :) When she got back to the house, Brooke was out of breath and speechless and Dilly had a big cheesy puppy grin on her face... like she almost got away with it.

message 1346: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That's really funny.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That's a great story, Heidi! :D

message 1348: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments What a great rememberance for her. I love it when you can share the love of a great pet for others, and to remind them to hug their own puppies & donate to the local animal shelter, that was priceless.

Thanks for sharing that Heidi!

message 1349: by Heidi (last edited May 12, 2009 06:20AM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I didn't write it.

I do like the story of the Chinese delivery chase. My stepmom and I had a good laugh over that last night.

On an unrelated note (and changing the subject because I feel like I've monopolized this thread):

I need sleep!

message 1350: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Sorry to hear about your dog, Heidi. It's a hard step to take, but I think it's one that shows the respect and love you have for your pet. Don't let your brother tease your stepmom too much about it.
