No, I wouldn't really care what Ethan Hawke thought of my pants. But maybe I will paint my toenails as a concession to beauty. Taking care not to use gang colors, naturally.

Alleged criminal. Although I am in a hanging mood. We've had a lot of wilding incidents lately.

Isn't a maillot a bathing suit?

Plus, there's the added bonus of subliminal suggestion (beach time, beach time)...

The problem with my gauzy skirts and dresses is that you have to wear a slip with them because they are kind of thin. Then I will feel hot wearing the slip.

Maillot & gauzy slip... no slip necessary. Just, dressed for beach time. :)

Uh, Heidi - jury duty is not at the beach, at least not here.

Good plan, i wonder if i can get someone in his class to get him, he's at a different school so he would never see it coming.

Well, I didn't actually look better than the defendant, who was in a suit and tie. But I was equally as slobbily dressed as 3/4 of the other prospective jurors, so I felt at home.

I didn't get picked, though I wasn't released until 5:30 after every juror had been seated. It was a case of (alleged) rape, armed robbery with a knife, and kidnapping, which had occurred in 1998. When I got home I googled it. I found a case featuring the defendant that had been ruled on by the Illinois Supreme Court, but it was a case involving a 2000 rape (he'd been found guilty). I couldn't find any information about the 1998 rape. So it sounds like the guy might be a serial rapist....

message 6462: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Even though it involves crime and punishment, jury duty is oddly boring. I guess it's all the time spent sitting around doing nothing.

The last time I served was about 3 years ago. I was in the jury pool for a robbery case, but the defendant worked out a plea bargain during the jury-selection process, so they ended up just dismissing all of us.

It probably wouldn't have been much of a trial. The guy robbed a jewelry store on Canal Street and then fled south, on foot, in the direction of the police station on Ericsson Place (two blocks away), where he was promptly apprehended, loot in hand.

I have no doubt it is extremely boring. The most interesting thing about it was listening to prospective jurors answer the judge's questions on what their favorite TV shows were, their sources of news, and their hobbies. Of course a rape case would have its horrifying moments, but in general I think you are correct.

message 6464: by Jammies (new)

Jammies The only time I served on a jury was two years ago. We got as far as testimony from two witnesses (with an unexpected hilarious moment) when the defendant pled out. It was a home invasion case where the defendent was alleged to have kicked down the door to an apartment, entered, and physically struggled with the people there. The defense was that since the defendant had a prosthetic foot he couldn't have kicked in the door. It would have been interesting!

I'm proofreading too, Janine...but not getting paid for it. Something wrong with this picture, I think.

Nicely done on the freelance job.

I'm a pro now, they have to pay me. I know exactly how much our proofreaders get payed and I get more than most of them :)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments right now, i'm gassed. second straight night that i was out after 1 and up at 7. too old for that. sunday night i had to drive 40 miles then tow my son's car 30 miles at midnight, illegally, back to his town. dragging a car by a yellow tow strap in the warm summer night can be fun though with the right attitude. my son reminded me of this. then last night i went with my wife and 22 friends to see hillsong united. terrific concert. here is what hillsong united is about

http://www.youtube.com/user/hillsongu...

anyway, today i am gassed

message 6492: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11852 comments Right now I'm helping my daughter get her party organized. She invited herself and five friends over for a swim and a BBQ. Of course dad had to buy the burgers and such, but she did bring her own salad, chips & cookies.

Two of the friends are profoundly deaf, two are hard of hearing (they can hear a little bit with the help of hearing aids), and the fifth is the sister of one of the others.

My daughter is being kept busy interpreting for all of us. My backyard is full of signing!   :)

Graham cracker crust and chocolate tart part are currently baking... marshmallow merigue gets piped on and baked tomorrow after work.

I hope it's tasty!

No, she is not. She has always been interested in signing, and in helping people communicate. She'll get her official interpreter certificate at the end of the summer & can then get work doing something she loves.
