Jonathan, are her hips and knees OK? Amazing that she only bungled her wrist. She must be tough.

message 5902: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments An initial scan did show some damage at the hip, but it appeared to be old, from a prior injury some years ago. The doctors want to get all of her old records to compare and make sure before discharging her. She's made it to 97 by being tough and stubborn--but refusing to use her cane, etc. is now working against her unfortunately.

message 5903: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) Jonathan, my grandmother is 93 and it took breaking her leg a couple of years ago to get her to use her cane. She is also a feisty one. But, I wouldn't want it any other way. Wishing a quick recovery for your grandmother. :)

message 5904: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Thanks Petra...and everybody. I really appreciate the good wishes.

message 5905: by [deleted user] (new)

I've been in several ER's over the years with both of my parents. My thoughts are with you Heidi and Jonathan.

message 5906: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Thanks Clark. My grandmother's in much better spirits today, joking around with everyone. They're going to discharge her from the hospital tomorrow, but she still has to do a couple weeks of physical therapy. Anyway, all in all, things are looking good.

message 5908: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Thank you to all of y'all. Johnathan, I'm glad to hear your grandmother's going to be released tomorrow. I'll bet she'll be glad to get home. My stepmother's still in the hospital. Her fever went down by Sunday night, but then it went up and up... they've been IVing antibiotics and were talking about a blood transfusion until the infection specialist saw her & said it doesn't seem to be what they were suspecting - he thinks it's a reaction to the chemo regimen she's on... so they were changing up their strategy as of this evening when I was there. She seems content as can be - they sent a masseuse to her room to massage her feet and legs and hands and the hospital food's been decent and the nurses are spoiling her rotten. She's getting above par care.

message 5909: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments They'll release her once she's bee fever-free for at least 24 hours.

message 5910: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Jonathan, that is great news!

Heidi, glad your stepmom is getting such great care.

message 5911: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments She's also got a phenomenal view of the Little Rock zoo and War Memorial stadium and most of the booming metropolis that is downtown Little Rock from her window.

I hope they can figure it out, Heidi! That's nice that she seems content, though, and is getting massages.

message 5913: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Sorry to hear about your stepmom's fever Heidi, but it's wonderful that she's getting such good care. I'll be thinking about her and you and wishing you both well.

message 5914: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I also brought her Edwin Edwards' biography which is ripe with awesome political anecdotes. She shared one with me that she read this morning... "Guess which Democratic Party gopher drove Rep. Hale Boggs to the airport for the start of his ill-fated trip to Alaska? William Jefferson Clinton." And without skipping a beat, she added, "I'm surprised witchhunter Ken Starr didn't add that to his cockamamie accusations."

Ken Starr is now president of Baylor U.

That's interesting about Clinton/Boggs...did not know that. It wasn't in the bio of Clinton's early years I read, "First in His Class."

Kayla (atekayla) Right now... I'm checking all the notifications I got from GoodReads today... at a hotel in the middle of Nowhereville, Nebraska (sorry to anyone who's from Nebraska) because I'm on my way home (Chicago) from Colorado.

That's right. I always get him mixed up with The Last Hayride's author (another political biographer).

I swear I'm not picking on anybody! But I did notice on my drive out to Colorado that when I crossed the Iowa/Nebraska border, it doesn't say "Welcome to Iowa!" Instead, it says "Welcome to Omaha!" and that's the most excitement you get from off the highway... the rest is all corn fields and cows.

message 5923: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It's a little known fact that Omaha is actually the absolute center of the Universe. The casinos in Iowa, across the river, are just slightly off center.

message 5924: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments If they are just slightly off center, what does that make us in Wisconsin?

I was just picking on you Kayla. I make that drive almost every year, I much prefer the Nebraska part of the drive to the Iowa part of the drive.

ETA- I've never been near Ames, but I'm sure that drive would be lovely.

message 5926: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) An interesting way to see Iowa and Nebraska is to take US 30, the old Lincoln Highway. If you have time, it takes you closer to the small towns where all of the interesting things happen. Well ... maybe not all of the interesting things.

Love the Lincoln Highway. Very close to my house, in fact.

Hope the twitchiness wears off soon. Unless you like it.

Right now I'm reading the front page article of our newspaper, and wanting to cry. Toddler drowns in swimming pool

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind on my next trip. My boyfriend is seriously considering moving to Colorado now that we've just spent a month there, so I may have to make this 18 hour road trip again..

I know you were just picking on me :) Thanks for making me feel so included here! Hehe. It was nighttime on my drive out to Colorado so I didn't see much of Nebraska, but driving through today, I saw an alpaca farm along the highway! I got really excited because I've never seen an alpaca in real life before, only pictures :)

On ya Justin. Does that mean she is really a good cook?

message 5935: by Justin (new)

Justin Valentino (JustinV) Shitty cook. Good baker.

message 5936: by [deleted user] (new)

You realize that the leftover cake was for Jake, right? You're really taking it from your hospitalized cousin???

message 5937: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 06, 2011 08:55PM) (new)

That is alright Esme. I am sure with Justins awesome cooking skills he can whip up another in no time.

message 5938: by Justin (new)

Justin Valentino (JustinV) Or no one can mention the cake to Jake at all.

Jammies Right now I am researching vena cava filters.

message 5941: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Is that like an oil filter?

message 5942: by Jammies (new)

Jammies It's an oil filter for the body--it's designed to keep DVTs (bigass blood clots) from migrating from the legs to the heart or lungs.
