I’m going to check this out- a close friend’s son was just diagnosed with autism. I’ve done a bit of reading on autism, but find myself at a loss with what to do/say and how to interact with her son. Thanks.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments this will really really help you begin to understand what they are feeling and experiencing. i totally saw my nephew in temple and get him better now. very important story

I saw Grandin interviewed on Cspan for 3 hours and it was very eye-opening. She is so smart and did a great job explaining how she sees the world. There's also an honesty and frankness in her communication that I think comes from the autism.

message 5510: by [deleted user] (new)

Right now I am doing the washing. Thankfully that leaves plenty of time to potter around doing other things. I have no sport or any other activity planned today. Heaven.

Félix (habitseven) Enjoy.

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I'm currently sitting in Gameworks eating a great bacon cheeseburger after walking all over my first Comic Con. Really overwhelming with all the people, but really cool. My daughter just gave us the "Coolest Parents" award. She wants to be a comic book writer-illustrator when she gets older. :)

message 5513: by [deleted user] (new)

Awh congratulations Sher. That is so cute.

message 5514: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Kevin, you would enjoy reading Temple Grandin's books. I know one of them talks a lot about autism. The book I read of hers was primarily on the similarities between animal thinking and autistic thinking.

I have been mulling over her advice for selecting a dog. She likes brown-eyed mutts, and argues convincingly against purchasing a purebred dog. As for coat color, she recommends dogs with at least SOME white in their fur (not a solid black color.) Her work with animals is fascinating.

My husband finds her books helpful to families with autistic kids. The writings and Grandin's success give them hope for their children.

message 5515: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Cynthia, yesyesyesYES rescue a mutt, please! I have had three amazing rescue dogs, and can't imagine better companions.

message 5516: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments my wife did the "rescue a mutt" deal. it took a lot of patience, training and cleaning up after him but after almost 28 years she says i am almost worth it.

message 5517: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Oh Jammies, it WILL be a mutt. My last one, Grace was border collie mixed with something big. She was the smartest dog ever. My dog Lucy was rescued from a hot as hell locked up mobile home in August. She ate garbage and drank the toilet tank dry to survive. She was sweet, but oh so needy/anxious. So I am definitely sold on mutts. My good friend keeps getting purebreds and complaining about their health and behavior problems. I say to her Jane, duh, it's time for a mutt.

message 5520: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I really like her books, and she was great when I saw her speak at an autism conference as well.

message 5521: by [deleted user] (new)

She was just featured on an installment of The Science Channel's "Ingenious Minds" (Thursday nights @ 10).

Good show.

message 5522: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Ja. Most of the dogs in the shelters here are pit crosses -most commonly pit-lab, but nobody wants to hear that.
The shelter I adopted Bo from charged a purebreed surcharge, which was total bull since it's not like there was anything to be gained or lost by it. Really, I was taking on more known health problems when you think about it, since mutts tend not to have some of the issues that purebreds do. And it's not like he had papers, and he's neutered. So the fact that he's purebred shouldn't have mattered.

message 5523: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Barb wrote: "What's Bo? Other than a tomato killer?"

Cocker Spaniel. We joke that like the rest of the dogs in the shelter, he's secretly half pit bull, which would make him a cockpit.

Bun around here if the shelter staff don't know they just say lab mix or terrier mix. It's funny. Luckily I really trust the staff at our county shelter--they are always spot on with their dogs they recommend to me.

Darn bed pigs. Sounds like my 8-pound cat. She really sucks up a lot of bed space for such a little squirt.

Maybe i should do homework instead, let me think about that idea, nope, sounds boring so I won't
