Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments right now I am mad at myself for falling down while I was shoveling and hurting my wrist. At 63 you'd think I would know better by now. I knew there was ice under that new snow! I had on my rubber boots, why wasn't I more careful? Now I'll have to shovel the next 12-20" of snow with a sprained wrist!

Can you break in shoes sitting on your backside? I thought you had to actually walk around in them and endure the pain...

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I'm just out of a meeting with the acting library director and all of human resources. No, I'm not in trouble. He's new, sort of, and trying to learn all about the technical side of the library administration, so I got to walk him through the steps of everything I do, including budgeting, selection, and collection maintenance and weeding.

The meeting lasted more than an hour, and next he's going to meet with the other selectors, and then the heads of all the other technical services departments.

I got to go first, lucky me!
I need coffee.

All the knowledge and care in the world can't stop the falling. I did it a couple days ago when I knew I was stepping on it. Luckily I just bruised my back.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments And I'm glad I don't have to shovel any snow. I'm sorry about your wrist, Michele!

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments right now I'm sitting with my wrist elevated and wrapped in an ace bandage. my fingers are frozen because I just took the ice off it. My whole hand is bruised including the fingers.

Are you sure your job is safe, Jackie? That sounds like the part of Office Space where they have to report to those dudes all that their job entails, why it is important.

Hope your hand and wrist feel better soon, Michele. Do you have some nice neighbor that can help with the shoveling?

message 5159: by [deleted user] (new)

Mich, how come YOU have snow and we don't? It's freezing, just no precipitation...hello, PORTLAND! I need one good snow, or it needs to warm up already. COME ON GLOBAL WARMING! (I say this not to be a snot, but because I don't believe that "climate change" is real. Climate does change, but historically it always has. Whatever, don't want to debate it, just saying why I feel able to be cheeky about it.)

message 5160: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments no nice neighbor and my sister in law has the flu. more snow scheduled for saturday. we are running out of space to put it. the snow pile in our front yard is 4' deep. we need to get a roof snow rake this weekend so the roof doesn't collapse. global warming? couldn't prove it by me. ice age maybe. isn't that supposed to happen if the gulf stream fails?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Sally wrote: "Are you sure your job is safe, Jackie? That sounds like the part of Office Space where they have to report to those dudes all that their job entails, why it is important."

I KNOW, Sally! That's why everyone's a little freaked out about the whole thing. I don't trust Mike, the new director, one bit. But I don't see how they can fire me, I'm pretty much IT when it comes to who does this job.

Really, I'm overworked and underpaid. They asked how they could make my job easier, and I said get someone else to do the World Languages and the A/V. I don't think that's what they had in mind. :)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "Really, I'm overworked and underpaid..."

When you said that your job included "budgeting, selection, and collection maintenance and weeding," did you mean weeding out titles that the library doesn't need to retain? Or tending flowerbeds?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I meant weeding out old and damaged books, Jonathan. No flowerbed tending in my job. :)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I think the powers that be are going to cut our town's library hours again. Probablly eliminate one of the evening hours. right now they stay open until 9 3 nights each week. I bet they eliminate one of those evenings or one of the mornings. hope your job is safe, jackie. our librarians are overworked. everytime I go in they are too busy checking out books to check any in and the return bin is overflowing. I just give them my card to scan in and go pick out books to request via the computer catalog for my next trip (I go twice a week) and give them time to check my books out since I'm there for 1/2 to a full hour and I usually have at least 8 books to check out. I have my own crate because I request so many books. Hey, I read fast.

You guys, I can't explain how much I want this job. My other options right now are an application in for Teach for America, fingers crossed for a Denver position, or a part time job MAYBE at the school I was at last semester.
It is SLIM pickins out there for new English teachers, and boy am I hungry.
