I read this article about a week or two ago and thought it made sense. I know that I always immerse myself in a book when reading and good writers know to engage all five senses when writing. It makes a good case NOT to use sparknotes. ;0)
An example of brilliant writing. Austen makes you sad, happy, furious, excited and calm. You feel the tension, you smell the sea breeze, you see the smiles, you hear the music at the ball. It is the same for many other good writers. You feel so drenched into the story, your heart rate and mood change. If you are reading a story that is flat, you toss and twist and tune out. You browse just to complete the piece.
