The Categories:

10 points – Miles Franklin: Read a book longlisted for the 2012 Miles Franklin Award. If you are amazing and have read them all, pick one from a previous year.

10 points – Back to School: Read a book you were supposed to read in school, but either bailed on or watched the film. (If you were super studious and never did this, then read a book most people were assigned to read in high school but you weren’t.) Or, if you finished school more than 5 years ago, go back and re-read a school text that you hated. We will make an exception to the no re-reading rule just this once, in the hope you’ll change your mind and love the book!

10 points – Non Fiction: Read a memoir or narrative nonfiction book. (Examples: Stasiland; Monique and the Mango Rains; The Hare with Amber Eyes; etc.)

15 points – A book a day: Read a book in one calendar day. (Must be at least 150 pages long)

15 points - Classics: Read a book that you’ve always wanted to read but haven’t gotten around to yet. Just think of all those classics waiting for you to love them!

20 points – Teen Reads: Read a Teen/Young Adult fiction title. There a plenty of amazing books that are overlooked in this genre. We are happy to recommend! Melina Marchetta, John Flanagan, Cassandra Clare and Jackie French are a few brilliant authors that spring to mind.

20 points – Culture Shock: Pick one of these three: Read a book that is set in a place you’ve never been but want to visit. Read an Australian Indigenous title. Read a book that has been translated from another language.

20 points – Staff Picks: Come in and have a chat with us. We’ll suggest a few books. Read one.

25 points – Film Stars: Pick a book that was made into a movie. Read the book and watch the movie. For bonus points write a few sentences comparing the two.

25 points – Lucky Dip: Go into a bookstore or library. Pick any bookshelf. Read the third book from the left on the fourth shelf from the top. (If it’s not at least 200 pages, pick the next book to the right.)

25 points – Don’t Judge a book by its cover: Read a book about which you’ve heard bad things. Innocent until proven guilty is our motto. To help you be brave we’ve made it a high point category! Every additional book you read that fits this category will get a bonus 10 points.

30 points: Read a trilogy (or any three consecutive books in a series). Remember, you can’t have read any of the books before! Suggestions: The Duncan Lay trilogy, Michael Robotham, The Lord of the Rings, etc. 5 points more for any other books you read from the same series.

Winners announced 9th February 2013

Have fun! 
