Firemirage | 17 comments I thought I would just clear this up for the lovers who stray onto this club. It's quite the true statement too. Seeing as "guys" don't understnad what "true love" is or find "romance" boring. Burst of the bubbles, Lovers. Girls hate this crap too! ;D Let me put this into simple words since thats all Meyer seems to use (no offence to the fans):

Girls don't know what true love or romance is either. Some of you may think you do, but honestly if your only experience with relationship is the one in high school then you definately don't qualify. Because everyone with a right mind knows that High School love isn't love, it's lust. (Most of the time.)

We may have a better grasp at it, or even want it more. But that doesn't imply that guys have any less idea of what it is. Granted some guys do care less about it and/or only want it for sex. Not all of them do though. I say this on behalf of my male friends who are accused of hating it simply because it's genre is "romance". Not only sexist to say that ONLY "guys" hate Twilight because they don't know what "love" is, but it's also close-minded and shallow.

So any avid Twilight lover who says "You only hate Twilight because you're a guy." Or "You don't understand love because you're a guy!" is EXTREMELY wrong. I'm pretty sure I speak for most guys in this group. They hate the book for deeper reasons than that. So next time you want to say something like that, you may want to rethink your comment.

(This post doesn't apply to all Twilight fans, only the ones who fit the criteria. ;D)

Thanks for your time! Leave pretty comments, haha, if you want.

Robin | 5 comments twilight lovers should be shot. i totally hate it because of the unreality, freakin' "true love"/"love at first sight"/"destiny" crap, and i'm a girl. a bunch of bitches at school nearly fractured my wrist and forearm hitting me with the books after i declared my undying hate for the whole 4 book series. and wasn't it origionally supposed to be a trilogy or whatever?!?!. and i hate Renesmee. she sucks. and bella is the most insolent, bitchy, mary-sue-ish character ever written by womankind. stephenie meyer is a disgrace to women everywhere. and edward is an emo who wears lipgloss and eyeliner in movies. and they never actually seem to do anyting much ever. and the word 'chagrin' is used about a million times in BD.

grrrr die twilight!!!!!

message 12: by Madeline (new)

Madeline Girls have just as many brains as guys, possibly more (kidding); we are perfectly able to see the gaping plot holes... wait, let me rephrase that, the lack of plot altogether (i.e. Twilight has no plot), and the painfully steriotypical and shallow characters.

And 'true love'... uh, no. Twilight is, in fact, fiction. That kind of thing does NOT happen in life, especially if the relationship is based on attraction to one anothers' appearance.

lets hope, atleast... XD

Ain020596 Hey, i got a question!
*grins and raises hand*

You know, in alot of girl books-YA-there is romance. Doesnt have to include sex but still, there is the 'love' in the air thing.
I just wanna know, do guys actually feel like that?? (Because I'm planning on writing a book and it feels stupid writing from a guy's perspective if i have no idea what in the world goes on in a guy's head) Usually, when i read a book written by a guy...oh wait. that would only be Percy Jackson:)(the only one with teen romance, although they only kissed, like, twice. lol.)...There isnt really the whole lovey-dovey thing. Its just simple. And the one book I know is completely reliable, Harry Potter, which is written in Harry's perspective, is simple too.
So...are the guys portraited in teen-romance-girly-YA-books accurate depictions? And this is important! Guys, answer this! Because look what happened to Twilight! Its obvious even to me a guy cant me a century old virgin!!!!!
Lol.

I do not have much experience with the actual realities portrayed in girly teen books (and I have read a THOUSAND of those, lol), but so far, to be honest, high school is a LOT like the books, insofar as the events. There are people having sex, there are people cheating on each other, there are wild parties and there are people getting drunk (yes, this was a shock to me. Shuddup). But the guys are very different. No guy in their right mind would say, "I would do anything for you, my ." Obviously, I'm not a guy. Now, don't get me wrong, I know this might sound really sexist (or overly feminist, however you prefer to look at it). But guys are...okay, overly simple. I know that's generalized, I have met (shockingly few) guys who are anything but simple. But in high school, guys are shallow. They are. Sorry. I'm sure there are exceptions out there, but for the most part, guys in high school are shallow. Okay, so I'm being really mean to guys here.
Anyways, to bring it back to Twilight: Edward is not a real guy. Yeah, you can stretch the excuse that he's "from the past" pretty far. But I highly doubt even guys in the 1920s were hugely into deep talk about love, like Edward is. Edward's a cardboard cutout of a girl's dream. We all want the bad boy, the popular boy. Twilight is about a girl who gets that. But Edward is not that perfect combination. He is not sweet, tender, loving, generous, well-read, AND a bad boy. He is an oxymoron.

message 38: by Mutt (new)

Mutt | 98 comments Before I go any further, I'm gonna apologise for the length of this rant. The content, however, I remain unrepentant about.

Rose,
If you're gonna write shallow, sexist propaganda, then don't be surprised if someone calls you on your crap. I gotta say, if your opinion of guys is based on your brother and his friends then you yourself are extremely shallow or SERIOUSLY need to get out more.

“ XD lol
Well, since I have no one to hang out with at home other than my brothers I have come to understand that the average male at ANY age thinks like this:

1)Food/Bathroom
2)Boobs
3)Video Games
4)TV
5)Girls
6)Internet/Movies Based On Video Games And Boobs
7)Girls/Boobs
8)Spider-Man/Superman/Batman
9)Wonder Woman's Boobs
10)Boobs/Girls

And not necessarily in that order...except maybe the first, that one, that's really at the top of the list for guys. All the other ones can be switch around for the individual male.”

Hmm, this means that the environmentalism, spirituality and musical experimentation that I was thinking about while at high school never happened. Thanks for clearing that up.

“But yes, my older brother and I have also heavily criticized the portrayal of teenage guys in high school comedies/dramas/whatever. No man, teenage or not, will ever run to the airport to catch you before your flight. He will see that he has twenty minutes till you take off and will choose to call you on your phone in 40 minutes, when you're probably in the air...okay, an hour from now.
Whenever he stops playing his video game he'll call you.”

No man, huh? I was the guy that escorted his lady to the airport.

“Men will also never say I love you first, ever ever. It's not that they're afraid of I Love You, its just that the way they use love and girls use love is very different. They use love to describe...nothing. They DON'T use love, ever, its an odd conundrum. Women say they love everything, men don't ever use love to describe anything.”

So a guy won't use the same word to describe his feelings for a female as his feelings for a funny slogan on a t-shirt. It's not a guy's fault that you seem to be so frivolous with your words, nor is it a guy's fault that your vocabulary is so stunted that you're stuck with one to describe most positive feelings.

“It's as if they don't know its a word!
And that's why guys never say I LURV YOU first.”

Once again, I guess I don't exist. I said it to my fiance before she said it to me. This was before we were even dating. I was the one that took that risk and know many other males that have done the same.

“Also, there is no such thing as a sweet, tender, loving, generous, well-read, bad boy.
No boy is truly bad, just an ass.
No boy is sweet, unless he's eaten a literal ton of candy in less than 24 hours and ants are crawling all over him.”

FINALLY! Parts of something that I agree with! All up to the part about “well-read bad boy.” I've known more than a few. Hell, I've sat down with bikers and worse and chatted about how they run their gangs with concepts taken straight from Machiavelli's “The Prince.”

“No boy is tender. The word, phrase, and action are foreign to the male species.
Boys are only loving when the girl has molded him into their perfect ideal of "MEH BOYFRIEND!!!"
No boy is generous. You may think that him letting you borrow his pencil is generous but that's far from it. They care not for pencils and its literally like giving you a stick that tends to make purty lines. He can always get another one.”

You're still in school, aren't you? The more I read, the more apparent it becomes that you have yet to actually learn anything about males in general. I'm sorry that the pickings as far as dudes go in your area. Seriously though, there are plenty of guys that know how to treat a lady well. Sadly, most of the women that complain to each other about men also end up always falling for the jerks that'll treat them like crap, rather than find a guy worth knowing because guys that aren't jerks fly right under the radar...

“If they let you borrow money and don't ask to get paid back this is not because of generosity, its because of peer pressure. If a guy were to walk up to a girl with his friends and ask for his money back all his friends and the girls' friend would be like "Dude! What the hell? That's not right!!" So its more out of insecurity of image than generosity.”

Wow, GUYS are insecure? I guess women are so much more secure with their unhealthy obsession with fashion, make-up and complaining because boys aren't like they are in the books at all! Please, there are multi-billion dollar industries that milk women the world over for all they're worth by playing on their insecurities. As far as cash goes, people the world over are the same, both males and females.

“Also, they don't let anyone borrow more than 5 dollars at once.

Well-read boy? That's a literal oxymoron in itself. The only thing guys read is the dialogue in video games that tells them who to kill next. Boys don't read, if they do its out of SO MUCH BOREDOM!!
Or a get-rich-quick scheme.”

First up, don't use the word literal so much. It makes you sound like you aren't fully sure of it's meaning. Secondly, I read. A lot. A sample of topics I've read about recently include Eco-feminist spirituality, martial arts, child-care, vegetarian cooking, medieval history and conspiracy theories long since proven false. What about you?

Also, a question: How do you know what other guys do and don't read? You've already told folks that your opinion is based on your brother and his friends. If I'd used that logic when I was younger, then I would have hung myself in my room when I was twelve due to the pathetic mind games that women seemed to play all the time, based on my sister and her friends. Instead I decided to actually talk to a few females.

“And yeah...I've gone on soooo long. I don't expect everyone to read this but this is pretty much how guys are. There are other things but then I wouldn't have the time or room.
Men are not complicated creatures, they're quite simple, its just the female mind, which is quite complicated, that makes the men complicated to suit the women. But in the end, guys are guys and girls are...complicated.

Not to sound sexist but its true.”

Not to sound sexist...? Wow, that's right up there with “I'm not a racist but...”. I'm guessing you've formed an opinion based on your brother and his friends, with a smattering of the guys at school. I've got news for you. For every dude that you get annoyed at for acting like this, there's two that you're ignoring because they don't bother trying to get your attention by trying the macho BS. Also, I hate to break it to you, but women aren't as complicated as you seem to think. There's just a different set of triggers to get to women. All it would have taken to come to that realisation is a little reflection, but from what you've written, it sounds like you're too busy making judgement calls based on incomplete information to give true reflection a shot.

(Is apologize not spelled with a "z?" Sorry, grammar freak is in the house!)

Well, that wasn't too harsh at all, geniusguywhoknowseverythingintheworldandeveryoneelseisWRONG!

*ahem* I don't really do rants, but I respectively disagree with you. There are points where you and Rose were both right and wrong. Note: I believe that Rose was right about boobs being close to the top of the list for a GOOD PORTION of guys. NOT ALL, just a good portion (I wanted to make sure you knew that I didn't say "all" before you bit my head off)

On your quote:
You're still in school, aren't you? The more I read, the more apparent it becomes that you have yet to actually learn anything about males in general.

Firstly, most of the people in this group are still in school, so I wouldn't be talking down to them if I were you.

Well, it's good to see that you care so much.
Seriously, I am getting sick of "adults" telling "kids" that we are still "figuring a lot of stuff out" and "discovering new things about ourselves" and etc. Really, we get fed enough of this bull in school about feelings, emotions and blah blah blah the list goes on and on. So when we come to the internet, our ever caring friend, we don't really seek judement because we posted something negative, or made fun of something, or just ranted in general. Of course, this little sanctuary was just stomped flat when you came in and gave your two cents.

Before you get the wrong idea, I'm not just doing this for Rose, which you have probably guessed. I'm doing this for our sanctuary, for our ranting space, for our human ability to make a few mistakes and then get on with our life!
So I won't apologize for the mistakes I will make, because I'm certain that when I joke around or mess up, you'll be the first one who will bash me for it.
The end.

message 48: by Mutt (new)

Mutt | 98 comments Rose, Sisi,
I've had my rant. Now it's time for my whinge.

There were points where yes, it was pointed out that it was about the "average guy" and whatnot. However, there were also phrases such as "no boy is tender," "no man teenager or otherwise." I guess I got annoyed because kept on switching from "average dude" to "every dude" by absolutes like that. That and the whole "average guy" stereotype is pushed so far out there that a lot of younger dudes think it's what guys are supposed to be, rather than behaving like ooh, I dunno, human beings? Guys act like schmucks, I'll admit, but there aren't exactly too many positive role models for young men either. For most young men the role models seem to fall into two categories.
1, Beat 'em up.
2, Knock 'em up.

Sisi, seriously, Wow. You managed to give me your opinion and rant without actually being offensive. Kudos for that. You made a valid point about making mistakes, but there are some mistakes that can be avoided with a little reflection of what you're doing and who it's going to affect.

Also, the word conundrum isn't used enough these days.

All that being said and done, moving on to something much more entertaining.
