❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) http://www.goodreads.com/book/combine...

I was combining a couple of editions of a children's book on the above page, when I noticed the extremely long list of Hansel and Gretel Editions on his page. Clicking on a few showed each had a different list of authors - none of the ones I chose listed Mr. Browne and a few under the original authors, the brothers Grimm.

I know we combine different editions, but we don't combine different editions with different authors do we? I thought that caused issues with the database?

I feel like I know the answer to this, but H&G is classic enough that if this is wrong, I feel like someone else would have caught it by now. So I'm asking, just in case.

thanks.

vicki_girl | 2764 comments It looks like the ones by other authors are adaptations or retellings. These should be separated from the Grimm versions.

I think what is happening is that when the imports bring in data, the primary author is changing on some editions. If the primary author on one edition is changed and not the others it shows the book on both author pages. I think this is allowing people to combine across multiple authors.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) ok, that makes sense. I'll work on separating these out as needed (but probably not until I get home from work).

Thanks!

Yes, this exists all over the database. I find examples constantly.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Ok, so this is the first classic/adaptation record I've tackled and well, question:

Who gets 'top billing' for these books (the ones that are clearly adaptations, like pop-up books, etc.) - the Grimms? Or the author/illustrator that created the adaptation?

vicki_girl | 2764 comments Adapter first, then illustrator (if different), then the Grimms.

Also, be generous with librarian notes indicating that these are adaptations. I have been putting them on each individual edition. It cuts down on the likelihood of recombines.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Ok, thanks! This is gonna be fun! :P
