Just finished
and
- loved both of them! Reviews coming up. Just started
- I enjoyed the first book in this series, a lovely blend of alternative historical fiction /fantasy.

Loved the last in the series and was sorry to see them all go their separate ways x
First, I want to say that until a few months ago I never started a book I didn't finish reading. Then, I found the one (I won't give the title, but suffice to say it was so atrocious it got erased from my kindle) I couldn't justify the time wasted trying to stomach it and that was it... the beginning of unfineshed readings. It was like an overflowing river, dragging in its wake the good and the bad alike. The large preamble is to justify why I gave up on the following books which are exceptionally well written and classics in their own genres. I couldn't get attached to any of the characters in
Same thing with
I'm now trying
Point is, I really want to like Octavia Butler's book. She was our lady of scifi when scifi was written only by men and her style is impeccable. I feel bad I haven't finished two of her books :( Meanwhile, I'm reading
and loving it as much as the first one in the series.
Flora wrote: "I just finished reading

I mean, I would butcher my brain to plough through rather than surrender. But I must say I have abandoned a few ebooks because, well, so many books, so little time (to waste on trash).

They are considered masterpieces and from what little I read they are splendidly written, superb example of how to express thoughts in English. So far, I have only discarded trash, never something as good as her work :(
Thank you, Carleny! I feel less alone now :) I can't connect with her characters and that makes it impossible for me to enjoy her stories. I don't want to spoil it for anybody who might like it, but something happens in the first few pages of Fledgling that made me so uncomfortable I couldn't keep reading the rest of the book.

Vicki, if you read any of Butler's books I'd love to hear your thoughts about your experience.Carleny, I've read several of Kenyon's books (and among them also Fantasy Lover)but her scifi series, The League, remain my favorite.
Finished Changeless and I must say Madame Carriger knows how to end a second in a series. Although I had a clue or two of what was going on, I didn't expect how things ended up. Needless to say, I've already started Blameless. Waiting on my nightstand there is The Iron Duke
Monica -- you hooked me to The Parasol Protectorate – really like Alexia… talking about well-developed characters that you can connect with… can wait to start the 2nd book
Cmyriam wrote: "Monica -- you hooked me to The Parasol Protectorate – really like Alexia… talking about well-developed characters that you can connect with… can wait to start the 2nd book"It's all Sarajayne's fault really :) She started it! But, I'm so glad I followed, because this series is, so far, awesome. Halfway through with Blameless and still liking it a lot.

I just finished
and
and
. I am currently reading
an ARR book. Then I am going to read
and
and
. I also won
in another group and need to read that when the book comes so that I can participate in the discussion. :o)
Almost finished
and it's still refreshing. Starting our October Book
and very much looking forward to it :)
Vicki, you'd be surprised. It's quite interesting how Carriger managed to breathe new life into vampire and werewolf lore by adding a soulless :)
Hey all - 'Soulless (The Parasol Protectorate)' (which was recommended to me by someone in this group) is on sale on Amazon / Kindle for $1.99 (down from $7.99). So if this is on anyone's TBR list, buy now!

I liked I Am Not a Serial Killer. It's not amazing, and I think it loses something about one-third through the book (You'll know the scene when you see it) but still good.

It was quite good. I hope you like it! :-)
I just finished
which was really good. If you liked Narnia you should read this one.Right now I've gotten a good start on
which is proving to be a fun read.
I have just finished
. Loved it, was a very fun read. I haven't written the review yet but will soon. Getting ready to start
. I've been looking forward to this one.
Waiting to read your review for Wanted Ghostbusting Bride, Flora, before I add it to my tbr pile :)Finished
and liked it a lot. Starting

Just finished
, which is an anthology of 18 short stories, all of them (allegedly) involving SEALs or former SEALs. I loved some, hated others, found less than a handful were involving active-duty SEALs "in the field" (which is what I'm used to when reading so-called "SEAL stories"About halfway through my next title,
by a Twitter friend, Author Carmen DeSousa. I'm seriously aggravated at the damage to this story by the utter lack of proper editing--and I don't just mean typos and misspellings though those are in abundance. It's far more basic grammatical difficulties -- and it's ruining an otherwise wonderful (so far) story. I'm 47% done and start a new job tonight but still hope to finish this book for next week's Tuesday Tip review.-sry

Then, I found the one (I won't give the title, but suffice to say it was so atrocious it got erased ..."Monica, about your remarks re Octavia Butler being a "scifi writer," she was actually a fantasy writer who dabbled in science fantasy but even her alleged "hard science fiction" in the Xenogenesis series just came out "fudging" on all of the actual science.
I really wanted to like
but the science was supposed to have been genetic engineering (central to my own books and we wrote our stories at about the same time in the 1980s when the Human Genome Project was just peaking). Alas, her idea of genetic engineering as the science in her science fiction was to put the words genetic engineering into the story. There was no hypothesis, explanation, speculative description or even purely fantastical "what if" put forth. She just vaguely referenced it as a kind of magic chicken she waved over the keyboard to explain away the annoying details not based in reality. It was very disappointing after hearing people like Orson Scott Card raving her accollades.I enjoyed her imagination, but her stilted world view and even worse, personal dialect (slangish sentence structures and colloquialisms) really ruined the attempted futuristic "shiny" mood for me. The powerful aliens weren't so powerful and the "big strong men" were just crass and vulgar IMO. It was also incredibly AuthorConvenient that any/all things of importance that happened to humanity happened to the protagonist, like she was the only person left alive. It made a planetary fabricated fantasy world very small and simplistic for me. Of course, compared to someone like say, Asimov, and his incredibly constructed worlds of his Foundation Empire, I suppose I'm making unfair comparisons. Still, if I have to live up to those standards, so does she ;-)
I'd like to find SOMETHING non-fantasy that she wrote and that I can enjoy. Supposedly she did write more than one non-fantasy title.

I know!!! I couldn't stop reading last night and finished it. Gasp! LOVE IT!
Sarajayne- were you at least happy it gave a better 'message' and healthier relationship compared with Beautiful Disaster?
Vered wrote: "Sarah - did you find a new job?"I did (sort of) and it is going to kill a lot of time with "dead space" (haha). I'll have a 30-45 min commute each way which will kill time for no good reason. A friend of mine who lives near the location needs a new roommate however and he's willing to reduce the rent just to get me in there - he has trust issues after this last roommate and I don't blame him! I might just be moving again in December (or wait until January) to make life easier. I won't have a first paycheck until the 3d week of November though, so my life is still pretty stressed until then--and only gets better assuming I can actually get them to give me hours right away. I only have like 15 hours scheduled next week (across 4 days so I shall spend nearly as much time commuting as working :-( really will have to move if that becomes the new "normal")
Thanks for asking Vered.
