I would cast Oded Fehr as Silhara
Marisa Tomei as Martise
Gurn I kinda pictured as a Golem almost, maybe Jai Courney from Sparticus.
Anya I reckon would have to be Charlize Theron
Conclave would be Richard Chamberlain
I would agree Cael would have to be an Irish Wolfhound.
Summer Glau (River from Firefly)as MartiseKit Harrington (Jon Snow from Game of Thrones) as Silhara
Kristian Nairnis (Hodor from Game of Thrones) as Gurn
I like the idea of Summer Glau as Martise, but kinda feel she's too pretty. I actually have a hard time thinking of someone in Hollywood who is plain enough to warrant the recurrent descriptions of plainness, nor can I think of someone with such a good voice. Silhara I thought of more as someone like Sendhil Ramamurthy from Heroes/Covert Affairs.

Hard to find someone that has an amazing voice and looks plain!!
I picked Summer Glau because I think they could make her look plain! Like Firefly, just more so! Haha! And I think if they gave her large clothes, it would make her look shapeless.
I was the one who mentioned Rodney Grant! I still think he'd be best for Silhara and even better is it made me start to think of Mary McDonald as Martisse-- http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YsUziLxKsII...Basically I turned the book into Dances with Crows.
Mia Wasikowska or Saiorse Ronan are young talented actresses who can do plain but striking really well. They're good candidates for Martise, in my opinion.
For Silhara I was all set to cast Hrithik Roshan, since I think of the Kurman people as kind of like Bedouin tribesmen, but then it hit me - Rufus Sewell!!http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001722/ Martise is harder to pin down. I can't think of anyone with an amazing speaking voice, but for looks, maybe Leelee Sobieski? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005447/
For Gurn I kind of wanted the Caucasian equivalant of Michael Clarke Duncan, so I looked through some big action-y movie casts and found this guy, Andrew Pleavin http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0687091/

Ooooh, I would also be okay with your Silhara pick!!

Oo! Good pick for Martise!!
I definitely had Last of the Mohicans Daniel Day Lewis in mind most of the book for Silhara. But I also think Rick Mora is gorgeous, and might be a good unknown - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2112939/ Especially with this picture. - http://www.imdb.com/media/rm397650841...

I had Jason Momoa - http://www.imdb.com/media/rm484948480... in my mind for Silhara and Tina Fey - http://www.imdb.com/media/rm298692608... for Martise. I was also thinking about Terry O'Quinn for Gurn - http://www.imdb.com/media/rm447846400...

Wow! I hadn't been able to think of anyone for Silhara until I saw your pick ...now, that I really can't see anyone else in the role.
Okay, before you read my casting list, I should probably mention that I would make a few changes to the characters so that they would work better in an audio/visual media. There are just something that work in a book that would not work in a series/film. Silhara -- Rufus Sewell (Thank you, Claire :)
**I would eliminate the 'torture voice' does not play any part in the plotline and would be annoying to the listener.**
I think that Rufus Sewell would be perfect for Silhara. I think he could actually pull off a guy who could both be a crow wizard and grower of oranges...while he is not being tortured by a god for his very soul.
Martise -- Felicia Day
**I would eliminate the 'beautiful voice' and the 'plain face' and change them to a woman that has lost her confidence in herself. Her voice, if you will. She knows all the languages and spells, but she has suppressed her own thoughts and ideas for so long she doesn't really even know them anymore.**
Okay, admittedly Felicia Day is too beautiful for the part as currently written, but she has Martise determined spirit. I can see her both as a scholar and milking a goat...and even though I am sure it would make her blush from head to toe - she is smart, sexy and sweet. All the attributes that you would want in Martise.
Gurn -- Simon Pegg
**I would eliminate his tongue being cut out, and perhaps give him a garroted throat as well as Silhara. He would still not speak, but the make-up time would be significantly less.**
When I thought of Simon Pegg, I just thought he would be fantastic comic relief in this role and I like the idea of him ending up with Anya.
Cumbria -- Derek Jacobi
**I would actually add something to this character, that he is perceived by almost everyone as a loving, caring man. Few know that his is also vindictive, power-hungry and cruel.**
This character has to be so powerful, that it called to mind a great Shakespearian actor...and when I think great Shakespearian actor - I think Derek Jacobi. I also think he would enjoy playing a villain, especially if it was a truly villainous one.
Anya -- Thandie Newton
**I love this character and would not change anything about it.**
This a very tricky character, and it requires greater depth than what it would initially appear beyond beauty and intelligence. I think Thandie Newton has that something extra that would be really great in the part.
Balian -- Bradley Cooper
**I love this character and would not change anything about it.**
I just love how skeevy this character is in the story...and I also love the thought of casting nice guy Bradley Cooper as a complete jerk.
Silhara- James PurelyMartise- Allison Scagilotti (her eyes are coppery to me and that is a descriptive quality that really stuck with me)
Gurn- Andre the Giant (imposing and could be sweet and friendly)
Anya- Eva Green.
I love Claire's idea of casting Rufus Sewell as Silhara! For Martise, I keep picturing Jennifer Lawrence (with dark hair). Normally she's too pretty for the part, but she can make herself look very "drab" too... and I think she could voice the part.
Malin wrote: "Mia Wasikowska or Saiorse Ronan are young talented actresses who can do plain but striking really well. They're good candidates for Martise, in my opinion."Mia Wasikowska definitely is someone I can picture being Martise. I think Saiorse Ronan is too young.
Nicole wrote: "I would cast Oded Fehr as Silhara"
Oh yes, please. Especially looking like this: http://bestof.provocateuse.com/show/o...
The two actors I picked to play Silhara and Gurn are both primarily known for playing villains.Silhara - Michal Wincott (Top Dollar from the Crow.)
I picked him because he's one of those actors I feel has the commanding presence to play an enigmatic, powerful mage who can also show vulnerability and be charming.
Gurn- Arnold Vosloo (Impothep in The Mummy and The Mummy returns.)
Gurn needs to be both intimidating and yet display tenderness, and devotion. Vosloo portrayed all those qualities in The Mummy.
Anya Mila Kunis
She's got the captivating, exotic beauty and the warmth ton play the houri with a heart of gold.
Balian - Wil Wheaton
If you've seen him on the Guild than you know he can play a smarmy jerk.
Cumbria - Patrick Stewart
Enough said.
Martise - Dina Myer
This is tough because of the voice. I think the appearance issue isn't such a big deal, because make up and how the actress portrays the character can covey a woman who thinks of herself as (and is perceived as) plain. But I hear the voice has to be something striking and captivating.

Someone in the spoiler thread mentioned Rodney A. Grant (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002110/) for Silhara, which I thought was an excellent choice.
I kept thinking of Daniel Day Lewis in Last of the Mohicans for Silhara and Samantha Morton (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119404/) from the Jane Eyre that had Ciaran Hinds) as Martise. For Anya, I immediately thought of Morena Baccarin from Firefly/Serenity.
I'm not sure about Gurn, though. Any suggestions?
Oh and I always picture Cael as an Irish Wolfhound.
