Not that i appreciate smoking, mind ... :P

message 6: by Scribble (new)

Scribble Orca (scribbleorca) No, it's for chewing and spitting. It has a similar effect to chewing coke plants. But...ah...yeah. Weird is an option - hyperactive hallucinations.

It gave me the jitters and made me throw up. But that's what the cool Habesha and Farange did on Saturday afternoon/evenings - chewed chat and chatted, before heading to the bar and getting rat-faced.

Great, pls keep us tidy, we do tend to ramble off in weird directions lol. I love the energy, but if this is going to be a serious forum, you need to keep us in check.
The Railsea detour is cute tho, perhaps rename it and start a new Railsea thread?

Hmm....gonna be difficult to keep the China Girl's appreciation of hotness in check...

Ok, i'm trying to work out a nice structure where members can participate by adding threads like Aloha's picture threads, because i hate those kind of groups where the mods are clones of Hitler and where you can't really express yourself.

But i don't want it to get too out of hand, so i'd like to perhaps demarcate a specific arena for it. It will be a folder where you guys can create threads and knock yourselves out with your own brilliance and/or your uberfandom of His Chinaness.

I was thinking of perhaps calling it 'Member's Arena'*(1) but would appreciate if someone could come up with a more imaginative name.

I would also want to encourage members to post links to articles in the online section, but please don't start yet, since i'm still thinking of a name for a folder where we can do that. Maybe just "Online Articles" will do. When that thread appears, please start posting. :D

On the group area in general (outside the member's arena) I do want keep the function of adding folder/threads for the 2 mods rather, (well, i'm doing it all myself atm for this exact reason) because we want to keep the structure of the folder hierarchy congruent.

But i want this to be YOUR group too, and so, if there is anything you want to see added- i'm still working on the non-fiction area, for instance, and was thinking of somewhere mentioning his comic book and videogame writing contributions.

I want to make the structure such that it will be easy to navigate through it all though, so this is why i'm dithering with it a bit, i'm still figuring out group structure options.

That's one of the things i'd like to explore in the online section - but even if there is one, we can create a thread for that here- would you like to have one in the Bas-lag section? Coming up!

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Does anyone know if one can create sub-folders in GR groups? I'm pulling my hair out my head here with only one tier to work with.

Miéville showed that bald is sexy. It's been a while since I've been a mod, but I'm not sure about subfolders. I recall folders, then threads under each folder.

We'll simply have to work around that obstacle then... :( What a pity.

*goes to store to buy wig*

message 17: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 63 comments Traveller, I went to Sword & Laser to check their set up, and there is no subfolders. It's folders, then threads within each folder. You can arrange folders so they'll go in order. You can also hold a thread to remain the top thread, since GR rearranges the threads according to last posting.

Go Miévillian and stay bald. Baldness should be a requirement to be in this club.

message 18: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments LOL, at least I won't have to dry my hair then.

Thanks for feedback. Yes, i know of the sticky function, but i think it only allows you to put one thread on top. You can't order threads in an indefinite hierarchy. (Like sorting them to show alphabetically)

If there is, i need to know.

message 19: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 63 comments I think it is only sticky one thread. I'm afraid that's about all you can do with the threads.

Thanks, i went to have a look, and the problem with that set-up is that you end up having to scroll down and scroll down forever in a huge unending page just to be able to see what the main topics are about.

That was exactly what i was trying to avoid, by creating a hierarchy of folders, but it seems that we'll just have to live with using our scroll wheel ad infinitum.

Thanks for your trouble.
Btw, you picture gallery isn't gone, it's now in 'Contibutor Palimsest' ;)

I hate you too. Mine got a sort of a grey streak on the one side when i was very stressed a year or two ago, and i started wearing my hair to one side to hide it. Amazingly, it seems to have abated a bit though. Have you ever heard of someone going less gray as they got older? :P

Maybe i'm just imagining it, but it really seems less to me.

message 25: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Ha!! Don't hate Aloha and Trav, as I'm getting older I'm changing back to my baby shape lol. And yes external is an illusion, so unimportant.

And I guess it's possible Trav. I'll send natural colour thoughts to you over the ether.

I need to vent somehow, so please excuse any drunken self-indulgent rambling that may follow.

This is the weird mess-hall after all. Excuse any messes i might make.

Aloha | 63 comments You ladies are making feel full of pathos. How about a celebration of a fruitful and inspiring life, of someone who inspired Traveller. We can all hope that when we die, someone will miss us enough to want to drink to us. Vivaldi's Four Seasons is appropriate for a beautiful life cycle.

LMAO! Aloha Jr. said that the ending of the movie was stupid. She decided to jump off the life boat to be with him, thereby impeding his focus on sustaining his own life. That piece of wood could have been his, but instead he's in the icy water, freezing his butt off while she won't let go.

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments But there is always anger as well at this kind of loss. This guy was still relatively young, and he had inspired a generation.

That bastard cancer had him in its grip and he beat it. This was a remission, and it hit him hard when everyone thought it was all over.

I freaking hate cancer. You have no idea how much i hate cancer.
First it took my beloved grandfather when i was a mere 12 years old, and he still much too young to go. That was my first brush with this hateful destroyer.

After that came many more. It reduced my father from a tall strong man to a shuffling mess. He managed to survive it, but the chemo destroyed his bone structure and his back.

This damn monster takes anybody and anything. It took my swimming coach in his prime--one of the strongest fittest men i had ever known.

He also thought he had this bastard beaten but it laughed right back at him and cut him down when his oldest son was a mere 13 years old.

And the bad thing is how it makes people suffer. It makes you suffer before it cuts you down like a piece of straw. Even my most beloved fucking dog had to suffer because of this damn thing.

Her whole belly rotted up with it. Had it cut out and it just came back again. She started to get gangrene and stink. I had to have her killed right there in my arms. Watched the light go out in her eyes.

My little niece at 2 years old, lying bald and emaciated in her hospital bed with tubes stuck in all over her tiny little body--after 2 years she beat it, but only after the terrible suffering of herself and her family who had to watch this tiny little thing's struggle.

Had to watch my partner's mother and my aunt suffer terrible pain before it took them as well. And so on. A close friend, a vet still in his prime--got cut down while his little daughter was only 2 years old. Nice. School friend died of breast cancer at age 26. Her mother had died of the same thing when she was about 15. Another uni friend died of liver cancer at age 28- just like that. One day she was still there, alive and bubbly, 2 months later got a phone call that she was dead.

The list just goes on and on.

I don't get it. We can walk on the moon, but we can't beat this piece of shit damn disease that cuts us down like we were ripe strawberries.

Erm...it was actually because it was Celine Dion singing beautifully. I've never seen the movie. I just think that Celine Dion has a majesty and grace and since 'going on' would seem to be what Trav will have to do...

My sister is battling breast cancer right now. She was only 40 years old when she found out she had breast cancer, and the mother of two young boys. In fact, she had just given birth to the second son and delayed getting a mammogram for a year. She opted for a double mastectomy because the doctor said that the chance of cancer developing in the second breast was high. A year ago, she went through a double, then chemo. I spoke to her two days ago, and her hormone level was high. Women with high female hormone level have a higher chance of the cancer coming back. I think they might have to do something to change that.

Cancer is a nasty illness.
