Agreed, I wish for half stars as well!

I thoroughly enjoy Lehane's Mystic River and will read The Given Day very soon. As for Gillian Flynn, hmm. I do't know. I did read Dark Places. While it was entertaining, I didn't take anything from it. So I passed on Sharp Objects. I saw the promotions at Barnes for Gone Girl, but didn't read the back.

As for recently read...
You Think That's Bad Ugh! don't waste your time.

The Moviegoer OK
Play It as It Lays Enjoyed
Rabbit, Run I have not yet acquired a vocabulary strong enough to describe my thoughts and feeling for this one.

Michael (mikedecshop) I have such mixed feelings about the Moviegoer, felt like I should have enjoyed it more than I did being a New Orleanian. It left me flat. Yes Percy writes in a style that can be haunting but the content just didn't move me. I suppose I should revisit with older eyes.

Taryn (tarynthegreek) | 11 comments Michael you described it better than I could agree very much with that statement!

Michael (mikedecshop) Just finished Live by Night gave it 5 stars. I have been a big fan of his since I read Mystic River quite some time back.

This is the Godfather, casino and Scarface rolled into one.

Taryn (tarynthegreek) | 11 comments I plan on giving Live by Night a chance. I loved Mystic River. Certainly one of my favorites!

Michael (mikedecshop) I loved Live By Night.

Just recently read The Yellow Birds a well written novel made Esquire's top ten ( not that means much but it seems I get a good one every year). If you are a reader who is not happy knowing from the get go this ain't going to end well. Then this one is not for you.

Taryn (tarynthegreek) | 11 comments I am currently reading Girl with Curious Hair by David Foster Wallace outside of my book club upon recommendation from another club member. There are stories in there that completely floor me and others I could do without.

Also the Bard's Midsummer Night for a book club (not looking forward to discussion on that one.)

And trying to finish Batman and Psychology. A friend gave me a signed copy to coincide with my Dark Knight love.

Jan | 16 comments just read The Fish That Ate the Whale: The Life and Times of America's Banana King biography of Sam "the Banana King" Zemurray. Sam came to U.S. as a penniless Russian immigrant and made millions selling bananas, overthrew Central American governments, donated lots of $$ to Tulane University, ran United Fruit and lived long enough to see its decline. Of course, there is a New Orleans connection. (i.e.Sam's buried in Metairie Cemetery) This is where the term "banana republic" originated. Wonderful read for anyone interested in that part of the world's history or U.S. history or anyone who just wants a good read, something different. Highly recommend!

Wendy (fuzzarilly) | 26 comments Hi everyone, I just joined this wonderful New Orleans/Metairie group although I'm from Jefferson. LOL Right now I'm on a Patty Friedmann kick. I just finished reading "No Takebacks" and "The Image of Mother". I haven't been disappointed in any of her books yet. I'll be reading "Odds" and "Secondhand Smoke" next. I ordered them and received them in the mail a few days ago. If anyone else has read any of her books please let me know what you think about them, good or bad and if you can recommend some good New Orleans authors I'd really appreciate that also. Thanks!

Wendy (fuzzarilly) | 26 comments Jan, I read Gone Girl when it came out then l ended up reading her other two novels. I remember that I liked all three of them but two of them were much better than one,I just can't remember which two I liked the most. I think it's old age, I can't remember anything anymore. LOL
