AndrewP (andrewca) | 2667 comments Has anyone else seen this, and what did you think?

I went into this with low expectations but was very surprised that it was half way decent. I didn't know that is was made in South Africa, by the same studio that made District 9. That would have been reason enough for me to go check it out anyhow. Certainly, it's way way better that the Hollywood version with Silvester Stallone.

If you are a fan of the comics then you will probably like this movie. It's very dark, gritty and violent and has the overall feel of the comic. It's nothing like any of the Marvel movies that's for sure.
Any yes, true to the stories, Dredd never takes off his helmet :)

Neither did I. Loved that film.

Saw Dredd a couple of days ago and thought it was very good. Much better than the Stallone one. I actually liked the Stallone one when it came out (I was young and didn't know any better) but this one just blows it away. I've not read any Dredd comics but think I will start picking some up after seeing the film.

Paul Perry (pezski) | 493 comments I have to say, I really enjoyed it (and I'm a fan from way back when, the days before even the Megazine).

Initially I had a few problems with the look (the Judges' Lawmaster bikes, for example, I thought looked a bit cheap and tacky) but I think they had to do something different than the look of that other movie; the visual design of which was superb, for all everything else about it was a steaming pile of grud.

That said, the near future feeling of the setting, with so much of it being recognisable tech (most of the vehicles) made it feel relevant; except for the hundred story blocks, it could've been set in a bad part of any big city. It made me think of the excellent French thriller District 13.

I also loved the moral ambiguity. As well as Dredd fitting the the old description "Everybody's Favourite Fascist", Ma-Ma's backstory made her somewhat sympathetic. I thought the use of the Slo-Mo was superbly well done.

I've heard it's bombing in the US, but hope it still makes enough for another instalment. I'd love to see more of Mega City One.

Joe Informatico (joeinformatico) | 888 comments I really liked it. I only read a few classic Dredd stories years ago, so I can't judge how faithful it is to the spirit of the comics. But on its own merits it's a good film. Great pacing with nice tension, great photography, (view spoiler). And well-spotted Paul: it does feel a lot like District 13, except that film is extremely kinetic and chaotic while Dredd is tense and methodical.

And before anyone brings it up: Yes, the plot has almost the same set-up as the Indonesian film The Raid, but after that starting point both films very clearly become their own creatures.

Lena Horn (lenahorn) I'm a huge fan of the old one :) I love cheese.

I haven't seen the new one, but I want to see it. I heard it's much more like the comics and I thought the trailer looked pretty awesome.

Leesa (leesalogic) | 675 comments I thought it was excellent. I didn't want to go; my husband dragged me. It was a 3D showing, and I don't like 3D (it makes me physically sick).

I don't know the mythology, the comic, and never saw the Stallone version. I just know that my husband is a comics expert and disdained the Stallone version because he took his helmet off (for one thing). (And my husband loves cheesey movies, especially based off of comics or sword-and-sorcery themes.)

I thought Urban was fantastic, and Headey was sublimely perfect. I don't know how she can make a character look disgusting, pathetic, sad, evil, scary, and sexy all at once, but she does it. The 3D was well done.

Daran | 599 comments I thought it was refreshingly straightforward. I think they set the plot up in under 15 minutes. That said, the action drove the movie in a way that seemed natural.

What surprised me most was how really beautiful the visuals were. The cinematography really good, and the set was bang on. I have to agree about the 3D. I usually hate live action 3D, but some of the shots in this made good use of it.

Karl Urban is becoming one of my favorite action stars.

I wouldn't mind another Dredd movie in a few years.

Tim | 380 comments I loved it, but then I've been a big Dredd fan since I bought my first copy of 2000AD back in 1980-something.

To my mind it seemed very true to the original comic. One of the few films this year I'd give a straight 10 to. Everything that the awful Total Recall remake wasn't!

Tim | 380 comments So why did nobody go to see it? :baffled:

message 10: by AndrewP (new)

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2667 comments Good question. I know that here in the USA it was not promoted much, but that seems to be the norm for any non-hollywood non-blockbuster. Unless you go to the movies a lot and see the trailers, you will probably not see any plugs on TV or magazines until about 2 weeks before release.
Name recognition might also be an issue in this case, as only comic geeks would know who Judge Dredd is. There might also be some people who see the name and think that it's a remake or sequel to the terrible Stalone movie.

message 11: by Daran (new)

Daran | 599 comments I think it was a combination of a lot of those factors, plus the time of year. It's hard for movies to get traction when the come out between summer and Christmas.

I planned to wait till I could rent it personally.

Stephen (conuladh) | 5 comments Best movie I've seen in the cinema this year, was very pleasantly surprised by how true to the comics it was and what a great Dredd Urban was.

The entire movie was basically a day in the life of Dredd so it's very open to further movies.

message 14: by Mark (new)

Mark | 64 comments It was a good show, nothing spectacular but a solid 2000AD kinda story. Pretty bad distribution up here (in Canada) ... in my home town of ~1,000,000 people, it was showing on TWO screens (not two theatres, two screens).

Hopefully makes enough internationally to warrant another ...

message 15: by Joe (new)

Joe Marion | 7 comments I saw it in 2D and 3D both in theatres and I'd recommend it easily up there with Avengers and Dark Knight Rises. I'm here in the States and yeah it seems to have been kind of flat in terms of viewership, but as mentioned, the cinematography, pacing, and action were all great. People ask me about Looper, my response is See Dredd First.

message 16: by Procrastinador (new)

Procrastinador Diletante I liked it a lot and it's a shame it's getting such crappy results, cause the director had plans for 2 more movies. My brother and I were the only ones in the room, in the opening night :(

Gordon (daftyman) | 34 comments I too really enjoyed it and did anyone else spot the "Chopper" graffiti tag? I saw that and I knew that there were people working on it that knew the world of Mega City One.

Hope they get to do a couple more. Finish with Judge Death.

message 18: by Keidy (new)

Keidy | 525 comments I'm really surprised that the advertising didn't really back up the praise that this movie is getting. I'm a huge comic book and video game geek and in all of the blogs or news sites that I often look into, they've heavily advertised the movie, especially ign.com. So when I told my dad about the movie (a closeted geek himself), he looked at me like I had three heads. He had NO idea that the movie even existed. He saw no TV advertisements nor any other advertisements that would lead him to believe they were making a Judge Dredd reboot.

But thankfully, even with the media being lacking (except for a few places online), the movie seems to be doing well. And that's good. A good remake like this should get it's due. It could've been better if the movie got better advertisements but it could've been worse too.

This is a quote that I got from wikipedia:
"As of 3 October 2012, the film has earned so far over $30 million."

That's not bad at all. ^_^v

I don't know if your emoticon denotes sarcasm, but a worldwide take of $30 million is pretty horrible. It will needs another 50% of that to just match the cost to film it. John Carter was considered a massive flop after getting 30 million in its opening weekend, although it had a budget that was 10 times that. :)

message 20: by Tim (new)

Tim | 380 comments On 11 October, US box office was just $10.1 million and worldwide $23.1 million. The film's budget was $45 million and the producers say they need to make $50million in the US before a sequel can be on the table. (Wikipedia)

Real shame :(
