Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Here's where we discuss the classic nomination for this month, The Hobbit. Enjoy!

This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I read it several times before we read it in 6th grade. We went on to create a play out of it & I got to be Bilbo, so I have many, many fond memories.

Mat (matclaxton) | 2 comments Also one of my favorites. Im looking forward to seeing the upcoming film.

Michael (michaeljsullivan) | 88 comments This was the book that got me reading in the first place...not just my introduction to fantasy, but a love of all reading...and eventually writing. So yeah, it has a special place in my heart.

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments I have to say Michael that I also name the Hobbit as one of the few books that got me into reading!

Who is interested in the upcoming movie?

J.D. Hallowell | 75 comments "Who is interested in the upcoming movie?

I'm interested in it, but also dreading it. My family is still subjected to a huge rant about how The Lord of the Rings was cut and altered every time we watch the movies (which is often - they are magnificent, and if I didn't know the real story, I might never have any quarrel with them.) I hope The Hobbit gets treated a little more faithfully.

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Well my entire family knows how the real story goes and we all still love the films. I for one never wanted to see Tom Bombadil on the screen that much although he worked in the book. (view spoiler) But that said I liked the movies. I'm a little nervous about there being three films and hope Peter Jackson hasn't bit off more than he can chew. Still I think I'll like it. I'm not looking for the same story on the screen as in the book because I want to see someone else's vision when I watch film adaptations.

J.D. Hallowell | 75 comments Jonathan, I think we may agree. (view spoiler)

S.C. (savagesc) | 21 comments Everyone needs to watch the extended editions of LOTR they add so much to Tue movies and make them much closer to The book

David Adams | 3 comments I though the extended editions of LOTR were much better as well. I'm nervous about The Hobbit movie...not because of what Jackson did to LOTR (which I loved), but what he did with King Kong (which I was laughing at while watching). The book itself I read every few years and have never grown tired of it. Fantastic story.

King Kong was a one off weird film. The thing I am worried about is the fact that he's split it into three films. And yes J.D. I think we agree on that!

I
I thought the hobbit was only going to be 2 movies? Anyway I heard Peter Jackson was going to make quite a few changes but considering the great job he did on LOTR I am not worried. Besides I liked the LOTR books better than the Hobbit so if Peter Jackson thinks he can make it better then by all means I give him the go ahead to try it. I think if the hobbit movie is anywhere near as good at LOTR movies, he will be successful

David Adams | 3 comments I thought it was only going to be two movies as well. I don't want to wait until Dec 2014 to see Smaug!

message 14: by L.M. (new)

L.M. (lmsherwin) | 6 comments I know! I'm kind of bummed about the whole three movie thing. Isn't Benedict Cumberbatch playing Smaug? Did I spell that dude's name right? LOL. SO excited about this book!

David Adams | 3 comments I checked...it is three movies. Apparently going to fill in a lot of what happened between the lines and between The Hobbit and LOTR.

message 16: by James (new)

James (theadventurousbookreader) There putting the book in three parts? I read the book for the first time year and completed it. I hope Peter Jackson doesn't bite more than he can chew for this wonderful classical fantasy novel.

Buck up then, the third installment is set for Summer 2014! (Still way too long to wait!)

S.C. (savagesc) | 21 comments Wow i thought two movies was ok but The Hobbit isn't a very long book so I think Peter Jackson will be adding a lot of stuff. I hope he can pull it off.

message 19: by Bev (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bev (greenginger) | 116 comments I read LOTR before the Hobbit and I was supremely upset when I realised that Hobbit was a kids book. I have come to terms with it some decades later but still prefer LOTR and would not want to re read the Hobbit.

message 20: by Jonathan , Reader of the fantastic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments I think the story is often undersold as just a kid's book. It's not as dark or mature a tale for sure, and yes Tolkien didn't love the story as much as 'Rings, but it's a fine story still. I read it again earlier in the year and picked up a lot of elements that I never had before...

harshini (watchmeread) I LOVE The Hobbit, one of my all time favourites! I love it as much as the trilogy! I read it before the LoTR , so ofcourse it was so awesome that I read the trilogy

Bev (greenginger) | 116 comments There is no getting around the fact that it is still a children's story. It is a fine story but the style of writing was aimed at younger folk. I have encouraged my oldest to read it ( she is 9) and I am sure that the films will be popular with them ( my kids) but it is not something that I want to revisit as I have so much new stuff to go at!

Fair enough! It's often not worth revisiting books you don't care about as much.

I was merely pointing out that I've seen a lot of people criticising them as only kids stories. And I think that you can't ever do that with a fine story...
Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia may be 'kids stories' but they can be read as well by adults.

Agreed it is not that it is a kids book as there are many great kids books. It is that the Hobbit is not LOTR.

S.C. (savagesc) | 21 comments I have a feeling with all of the changes Peter Jackson will be making with the movie, it will be made to appeal to children as well as adults. He wants the LOTR fans to love the three hobbit movies too.

message 26: by Stefan (new) - added it

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 136 comments I don't think that the films will be aimed at children any more than the Lord of the Rings films were. I think that Jackson makes these films so that they appeal to him and (because he is such a fan of Tolkien) the residual effect is that they then appeal to most other fans of Tolkien.

No it certainly isn't Lord of the Rings...

Jolea Harrison (joleamharrison) I think The Hobbit will be presented in such a way that it will appeal to kids and adults. The trailers I've seen seem to point that way - something for everyone. As to the additional material, I think we may see more Gandalf adventures from the appendices of LOTR. There will probably be things I don't like, additions I don't feel are necessary, but there will certainly be things I absolutely adore. Can't wait for Dec. 14th!!!!

Stef | 56 comments As a kid I liked The Hobbit more than LOTR. It is a wonderful book written with a lot of humor. I am not sure that the movie will respect Tolkien's intentions.

message 30: by Phil (new) - rated it 5 stars

Phil J | 329 comments I love the Hobbit in a different way than I love LotR. It's not weak- just different.
