Happy Banned Books Week! I'm starting The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle soon so I can be done in time to read Sherman Alexie's new book, Blasphemy: New and Selected Stories, when it comes out. The Twelve by Justin Cronin also comes out this month and I am way too excited for it.
I'm finishing up The Virgin Suicides and then moving on to Princess Bride and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
Ahhhh - already October! I was not prepared to post this month's reading list, but all set straight now.Starting with my October book club book, Leaving Van Gogh (not really excited because I am not a fan of art but we'll see). Then finishing up Santa Cruz Booktopia books (so I can be there in spirit): Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, The Orphan Master's Son, Swim Back to Me, and South with the Sun. Will probably finish up the first of the audios/narrators, The Passage of Power: The Years of Lyndon B. Johnson, and start Bring Up the Bodies, but if Bring Up the Bodies is anything like Wolf Hall, it will probably take months as I have to replay everything I can't keep straight. The I will read the 10th oldest book on my TBR, Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire and the 10th oldest book physically on my book shelf, Caramelo. And...I'll have to read Emotional Intelligence for my MBA class. I anticipate a huge challenge fitting these all in this month, but I really hope I do because I REALLY want to get to The Casual Vacancy!!!
Just finished The Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York. Incredible book about science, politics, and murder in the 1920s. Couldn't put it down. I've now picked up The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks as a follow on read.
Completed
and
. Recieved my Goodreads First Reads copy of
which I started last night. Next on the list is
. Then I' ll see where my whims will lead me.
Still pushing through The Pale Blue Eye, but I'm finding it a bit dull. I'm going to have to work hard to get it done by book club tomorrow night. I'm also paging through various things for Halloween- I've started Needful Things (but it is wicked long), Misery (much more do-able, length-wise), The Lottery and Other Stories, and I've started re-listening to Poe's Children: The New Horror: An Anthology.
@ becky,i'm not too far into it, but i have been swept away with june's character. and this is the same timeline of my own life, so i feel i am going to really identify with the pop culture references.
also, i did volunteer work with AIDS patients in my junior and senior year of high school, so that's hitting close to home too.
After a three week "reader's block" induced by the exceptionally dull book The Florist's Daughter (an utterly ghastly book club chore read), I think I am finally seeing light at the end of the "reading funk tunnel" by getting into A Fine Balance, a book I've owned for over 12 years and have been meaning to read all that time. Well, this time the book club is doing me a favour, so bring it on. 125 pages in, and I am LOVING it so far.
My first novel will be called "The Utterly Ghastly Book Club Chore Read". Thanks, Kats!
I'm reading
and am fascincated so far. I thought I was adding the book cover picture to this but that didn't happen. will try again next time.
Happy October! I am just starting Boy's Life by Robert McCammon, The Casual Vacancy by You Know Who, and Tricked (book 4 Iron Druid series) by Kevin Hearne.

Yes very much, it just takes me so long to read these books, so much info!!

Yes I was asking you-sorry :0
I really enjoyed the audio versions of these books. For some reason they helped me keep the storylines straight.
I'm making my way through the books I picked up at Booktopia 2012 --- Just started The Great Northern Express! I am SO enjoying it. It makes me want to explore the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont!
Veronica wrote: "Hello everyone! This month I'm reading The Casual Vacancy and Cloud Atlas :)"Absolutely LOVED Cloud Atlas. Enjoy!
I'm reading The Devil in Silver and am surprisingly having a hard time getting through it. I'm 100 pages in and I just keep getting pulled out of the story by the out-of-nowhere remarks about race. Like describing something rare as "as unlikely as a Korean marrying a black person" and several parenthetical statements describing why something may or may not be racist. It seems like it's not actually necessary to the development of the character and is just really clunky. Does the story get better after the first 100 pages?
Balancing three books:
,
and
. Put
onto the dnf pile. I read 94 pages and didn't want to read any further.
I started October by finishing
for book club. And then moved into
. I also plan to read
, as I have heard a lot about it lately. I also want to pick up
and
. Lets hope I can get it all done.
A Casual Vacancy appears to be the clear winner for many this month. I read Dora: A Headcase which turned out to be a page turner for me... not exactly sure why but fantastic character development is one factor. Now I'm finding myself with what Kats referred to as "readers block"
I'll be seeing Mary Alice Monroe on October 14 at a "literary throwdown" on Daufuskie Island (the place where Pat Conroy taught school for a year and resulted in his writing The Water is Wide) so I've just reread The Beach House The Beach House and Beach House Memories Beach House Memories; enjoyed each one more than I did the first time, especially the sea turtle info! I've just started the Art of Hearing Heartbeats on Ann's recommendation, and am liking it very much so far.
By the way, several more of my favorite authors will be at the Daufuskie event: Dorothea Benton Frank, Patti Callahan Henry, Sallie Ann Robinson, and Roger Pinckney, who will be launching his new novel, Blow the Man Down. It looks to be a fun-filled day, and the hour-long ferry ride in each direction just adds to the excitement! I'll post a recap afterwards . . .

Was not thrilled by 12.21: A Novel. 2 stars. Review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...Currently reading Graceling on my nook, and listening to Gone Girl.
I've started The Forgotton Garden by Kate Morton. It's been a while since I've started a book I have trouble putting down.

Listening to The Night Strangers and reading The Poe Shadow. Very captivared by The Night Strangers so far. Can anyone explain how you put the pictures of books up when you are talking about a book or maybe direct me to directions. Thanks
Currently listening to The Book of Lost Things and reading A Slave No More: Two Men Who Escaped to Freedom, Including Their Own Narratives of Emancipation which I will probably finish tonight. Next on the audio line-up is Nemesis and In the Kitchen. I'll most likely start reading Invisible Manafter "Slave no more"
