Actually, it was the Andals. First it was the First Men (no pun), then the Andals, then the Valyrians. Clearly, Martin was going for the successive waves of people who conquered Britain in real life, since Westeros is such an apt allegory for the British Isles.

I can't speak for the group, but I think we're mainly doing questions about the stories, not the tv adaptations. Not that there's anything wrong with them, it's just there are differences between the two and that could open up a lot of debate.

Yes, he did it once Ned Stark was dead and he took control of the Dreadfort. But before that happened, it was banned for a 1000 years. And it was a specific ruler who put a stop to it.
