Meghan Dee, I just read in Entertainment Weekly (where I pretty much get all my entertainment news) that Bruce Willis said he knew nothing about acting when he first did the Die Hard movies. He was just breaking out in Moonlighting, so he said that McClane is a lot of him. But I think that's what makes the movies so good.

message 52: by Sera (new)

Sera Meghan, I am an EW junkie, too! I have been a proud subscriber since the mid-90s. Don't ya just love the year-end issue for 2007?

message 53: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) We just got back from seeing National Treasure II. It was lots of fun. Just as good as the first one and definitely left open for a third.

message 54: by Beth (new)

Beth | 173 comments Dee, I went through a Bette Davis phase, too, last summer I think. I watched Jezebel, Dark Victory, The Little Foxes, All About Eve, and Now, Voyager. I love her! The scene in Jezebel where she is wearing that white dress, and she sinks down on the floor in front of Henry Fonda - is that awesome or what? She was so gorgeous!

message 55: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Stirrat | 201 comments In addition to a huge stack of books that I am just dying to get into, my P just gave my both volumes of the Bette Davis Collection and a vintage window card poster from Mr. Skeffington, so I am in Bette Davis heaven.

message 57: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Sera - yay! You're not only wise, but really really cool too. (heh)

I have yet to be able to open my issue yet, but it is in my possession. I didn't think to stop my subscription while I was in China, so I'm still trying to catch up on 7 months-worth of back-issues. But it's funny to read them now because people will mention something now and I can pop in a quote or something I just read.

Even though it's not a book, I would have to put EW on my top list of things I love to read list.

message 58: by Arctic (last edited Dec 26, 2007 10:23AM) (new)

Arctic | 571 comments EW is always soliciting me to subscribe to them. that's probably the main reason I haven't yet. it is tempting though.

Amy, Wordplay was great, wasn't it? I had no idea crosswords had such a cult following. and Deadwood is pretty great too. :)

message 59: by Summer (new)

Summer | 34 comments I have trouble assigning comparative values to things I enjoy, so these are in no particular order. Also, I wasn't sure if the music was supposed to be released this year. I just listed some things I've been frequently listening to lately. I hope that's alright.

Top 5 Favorite Books you read this year:
Bryson's Dictionary of Troublesome Words: A Writer's Guide to Getting It Right by Bill Bryson
Ida B: . . . and Her Plans to Maximize Fun, Avoid Disaster, and (Possibly) Save the World by Katherine Hannigan

Stranger than Fiction Directed by Marc Forster

Top 5 Favorite Songs:

Top 5 Favorite TV Shows:
I don’t even watch 5 TV shows regularly. Here are some I tolerate:
Big Love* (HBO)
Planet Earth (Discovery Channel)
Stargate Atlantis (Sci-Fi)
What Not to Wear (TLC)
The Wire (HBO)
*Although the last episode I saw, I didn’t like and probably will no longer watch.

message 60: by Amy (new)

Amy | 74 comments Arctic: Wordplay was fantastic! I was fascinated when they showed how a crossword puzzle was created. The NYT puzzle appears in one of the local papers and a couple weeks ago I noticed Trip was the creator! Yay!

I cried after I watched the last episode of Deadwood because I knew there weren't going to be any more. I don't watch tv shows anymore because too many great ones that I love are killed in their prime (Everwood, Joan of Arcadia, Deadwood, Dead Like Me). Don't even get me started on Everwood and how I sobbed throughout the two-hour series finale.

message 61: by Amy (new)

Amy | 74 comments Summer: I also loved the movie Water. I learned so much from that movie. Absolutely amazing.

message 62: by Sera (new)

Sera I'm looking forward to Wordplay as it is next in my Netflix queue. I've heard great things about it, and those of you who have seen it have confirmed that it will be good movie to watch.

message 63: by Summer (new)

Summer | 34 comments I took many promising recommendations from this thread. I already updated Goodreads; now, I’m on to Netflix! Thanks!

message 64: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Ooh, Stranger Than Fiction was a great movie! I forgot about that one.

message 65: by Beth (new)

Beth | 173 comments Geez, I forgot about the Rilo Kiley album. That should've been on my top five list. I loved Wordplay, too! I am a NY Times crossword fanatic, so I loved to see how the crosswords were created. It's neat to see how crosswords appeal to people from different walks of life.

message 66: by Beth (last edited Dec 26, 2007 05:00PM) (new)

Beth | 173 comments I loved Deadwood, too. I didn't watch the last season, because I was angry that it was being cancelled. So many great characters! I think Al Swearengen may be one of the greatest TV characters ever. (Now there's a good future thread: your favorite TV characters of all time...starting with Rory Gilmore!) The sexual tension between Sheriff Bullock and the Molly Parker character...wow. I added quite a few more colorful profane expressions to my repertoire courtesy of this show. Calamity Jane, was she great, or what?! I kind of had trouble understanding that flowery Victorian language, but once I kind of got into the groove, it was neat.

message 67: by Beth (new)

Beth | 173 comments Oh, and speaking of Deadwood and David Milch, did anyone watch John from Cincinnati? What the heck was that all about?

message 68: by Amy (new)

Amy | 74 comments Beth, you must see season three of Deadwood. Al has THE best lines. There's a few episodes where not much happens, but the last three are chock full of drama goodness. I didn't think I could love Al more, but my heart grew three sizes when he shows his protective nature towards Alma (Molly Parker). SO GOOD.

message 69: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I just downloaded a few more albums. I don't know if they're the best of 2007, but I think they're fun:

Colbie Caillat
Plain White T's
Sara Barielles

message 70: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Oh, and for you Bette Davis fans, check this out:

I'm catching up here. My mom bought me a subscription to EW in 1991 (or 1990) when Dances with Wolves was on the cover. And I read every issue until I finally had to let it lapse, like this year. They come every freakin week, and I just couldn't keep up with them. I currently check out the EW website for their "greatest hits." I did however just buy the year end issue at B&N. Is there no "yearbook" this year? It just says best and worst of 2007. Usually they do this giant yearbook.

Anyhoo, I got Pillars of the Earth & The Alchemist at B&N, among others (had to put back three just before checking out)! Thanks to all for your recommendations. And I currently have Now, Voyager at my house via Netlfix. Just wondering when I'll watch it! I may have to pull an all-nighter, just to keep up with all of you pop culture junkies!! Wish you were here! There will be pizza rolls!

My only experience with Flight of the Conchords is via YouTube...but I hear I need to see the series. Consider it on the list!

message 75: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments Beirut is fantastic! glad you mentioned them, Savannah. And if I had HBO I'd be all about Flight of the Conchords too.

mmm....pizza rolls.

message 76: by Sera (new)

Sera Alison, I just read 4 issues of EW this week, because I had fallen behind. I don't see cancelling in my near future, because that's where I stay on top of things. It's also helpful to find out what's good to see in regard to TV and books, because the reviewers aren't too bad and there's plenty of info to indicate how the general population feels about certain things.

However, I do not like the movie critics at all. They can be so phoo-phoo, or is it foo-foo?. I usually ignore what they say and go with word of mouth - which is another reason why I love this group.

I think that I'm going to start Pillars of the Earth after I finish my current book. I've been putting it off, because I know that I will love it, and figure that I won't be doing much else through the new year.

message 77: by Alison, the guru of grace (new)

Alison | 1282 comments Mod
We should start a Pillars of the Earth thread, too. Just in case people choose not to read our selected book, or want to read POTE alongside it. I bought it too. :)

message 78: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I just posted on another thread that I finally bought it. And the %#&@! Oprah sticker won't come off!

I want to finish the book I'm reading now and find out when the January selections are for this club before I start it though. And I have a HUGE stack of books I've bought but haven't read yet. I really need to stop buying them, but that's so not gonna happen. LOL

I have a huge stack of books, too. This group is killing me.

message 80: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) My to-read-own list has 106 books on it. Oy.

message 81: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Sarah, I meant to tell you I found at B&N a non-Oprah bookclub version of Pillars. It was the exact same cover as hers too, which I thought was funny. Must have been an older addition. But what I found truly funny, was that the 20% B&N sticker was placed over the Oprah sticker on every single copy in the store (yes, I really did check them all). I wonder if they'd been getting complaints or something?

But I was wondering is there a club in this place that just discusses books? Like each thread would on a book you wanted to discuss? Not to take away from this club (which I love and like the goals), but sometimes I just want to talk about a book that I'm reading or want to read and don't want to necessarily join a club in order to do so. So I'm all over a Pillars thread. Let me know where it gets started! Oy. I'm going to have to dig up my copy. I think it's been over a year since I last read it.

message 82: by Alison, the guru of grace (new)

Alison | 1282 comments Mod
Meghan: If you pull up the book (search for it, then pull it up), there's a place that says Discuss this Book. And there are usually some postings there. But not alot.

message 83: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments Sarah, I'll see your 104 and raise it to 110 own-but-unread. Soon to be 113 - thanks for posting about the B&N sale. :)

I too now require a Pillars thread. I think it would do well in this here general folder. Otherwise maybe we need a 'non-GG books and movies' folder.

also, Netflix has White Castle on the way for me.

Arctic | 571 comments Jondice77, you have great taste. :)

I'm a huge Elliott Smith fan, and you're absolutely correct about the sadness of his untimely death. Either/Or is probably my favorite of his followed by XO, though really I love listening to anything by him.

I'm hoping to read The Road this year (2008), so I'm glad to see that you liked it. Also happy to see Family Guy on someone's list here. :)

another note on music that i wanted to mention somewhere: KEXP and NPR both have their music lists up for 2007 if anyone is interested. Radiohead topped both lists. haven't heard it yet myself.

message 91: by Sera (new)

Sera Family Guy is the best, and I just finished The Road last week. I really enjoyed it, but I have a difficult time recommending it, because of how bleak it is.

1. The Hours
2. Blonde
3. The Virgin Suicides
4. Water for Elephants
5. The Time Traveler's Wife

message 96: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 74 comments Sera - I know what you mean about recommending The Road. It's one of my "favorite" books, but I don't even really want to call it that because of the content. I have recommended it to a few people at work and one lady told me today she read it, but she never wants to read another book like it. She knew what she was getting into because I told her a lot about it and warned her. It's such an emotional read that I'm just not sure how people will react to it.

Tiffany when I read The Virgin Suicides I was living in Italy and reading whatever book in English I got my hands on. (I don't think I ever would have read it otherwise.) I was so surprised, therefore, at how fantastic it was. One of my top choices for sure. The title of his other book, Middlesex, has done the same for me... not much interested. But I have a feeling when I finally pick it up, I will love it as well.

message 98: by Sera (new)

Sera Becky, I hear your struggle, because I feel the same way. I couldn't give it 5 stars, because it's a tough book, and when I finished reading it, I thought that I did not want to live after an apocalypse. That's an uncomfortable feeling for someone who loves life and tries to get the most out of it. But I guess that that's what also makes the book great, because it brought out a different perspective in me.

Beth, I WANTED to love Pan's Labyrinth so badly... but it was too intensely gory for me. I mean her step dad, of course. I loved the dark beauty of it in the more fantastical sequences, and considered it when thinking of films for this list. But the unadulterated brutality made me physically ill. The story is touching, though... and the girl is amazing in it.
