Isabella We are Witnesses: Five Diaries of Teenagers Who Died During the Holocaust.

José Luis "El cuaderno de Rutka" (I am sure there must be an English version) by Rutka Laskier. A 14-year-old Polish girl. It is very short diary but very intense. I highly recommend it to all those who read Anne Frank´s books.

Sarah Foley unruh Zlata's Diary, this is about a young girl living through the war in Sarajevo in the 1990's. Very good.

Becca Marianne wrote: "I don't remember the name, but it's a real diary of a young girl from the time of Yugoslavia's wars."

Zlata's Diary by Zlata Filipovic. Very captivating read, though I haven't read it since I was 12. Definitely recommend it :)

Sara Niles Mochaspresso wrote: "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It's not about the holocaust, but it is about a young girl that deals with the hardships of growing up in poverty."

That is an excellent choice, Mochaspresso-A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith is a wonderful book and the theme is about the psychological survival of a young girl whose external environment is like the concrete that the 'tree of Brooklyn' grows through. It is a testament to the human spirit and one of my favorites.A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Janet "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak is set in that period and time.

I am reading this book, now. I agree.

Try the above book - it is phenomenal.

Chanwoo Lee I think Schindler's List is a book that is similar to The Diary of Anne Frank because it involves Jewish concentration camps and a helping hand for the Jews. Just like Elli Vossen and Miep Gies, who help the Franks and the Van Daans secretly, even as to risk their lives, in Schindler's List, Oskar Schindler is a similar figure. He is a SS-Nazi officer who is an individual of good life and heavy drinking. Later on, he realizes the injustice conducted upon the Nazi-occupied Poland Jews, and secretly begin to help them to escape from this inevitable misery. Schindler outwits and defies the SS and risks his own life to become the legend and savior to the Jews who lost their peaceful lives to his own ruthless party. I believe this story is so beautiful because of the fact that a Nazi is supporting the cause of the Jews and it is a true story.

Schindler's List is a great book and wonderful movie-however, the writing style is not as easy to get into emotionally as the Diary of Anne Frank. But you are right, the subject matter is astounding.

Pourna I haven't read anything as good as The Diary of Anne Frank but I do suggest that you read I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced or a book, I can't remember its title, by Farah Ahmedi.

Geoffrey Original poster

Would you please change the original question in your first post to make it grammatically correct?

Anita Marianne wrote: "I don't remember the name, but it's a real diary of a young girl from the time of Yugoslavia's wars."

It was called zlaka 's diary do not have the authors name

Anita there is also schindlers ark Tom kennally sorry for the wrong spelling of name it was made into movie schindlers list by steven speilburg

Valerie Ormond I highly recommend The Year of Goodbyes by Debbie Levy by Debbie Levy. It is different in others in that it is written in verse and she based it on interviews with her mother and entries from her "posiealbum," similar to a diary. Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I hope you gain as much from it as I did.

Lisa The Hiding Place and the The Nazi Officer's wife are both great books. I personally HATED The Book Thief.

message 67: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa One of my fav. books about this subject is "Number the Stars" I first read it when I was in 4th grade. Another book I would suggest is a true story called "Girl in the Green sweater"

message 68: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Adcock For the Holocaust, Elie Wiezel's "Night" is powerful and unforgettable. If you are looking for something told from a female perspective, then it has to be Maya Angelou's "I know Why The Caged Bird Sings" or, to a lesser extent, Slyvia Plath's "The Bell Jar"

message 69: by Mary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mary Zidik It's not like other books because it's about a young Jewish girl who went into hiding and the details about what happened while in hiding.

Wendy Kalthoff Night is one of my favorites

Wendy Kalthoff all green gables books are excellent as is the little women series

Leonardo Carvalho There's a book co-written by Miep Gies, " Anne Frank Remembered: The Story of the Woman Who Helped to Hide the Frank Family".

It's a good read too.

message 73: by Isa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Isa Cerqueira 'Hanna's suitcase', read it, seriously !

Wendy Kalthoff That was a good book, the miep gies book

Henry As other people have been saying, Night by Elie Weisal is detailed as heck and it has actually given me some nightmares. Night When he describes the life in snow and if I remember correctly when he explains his sights. It is as if you are right there with him. I also like Number The Stars by Louis Lowry. It is historical fiction, but it is interesting.Number the Stars

Wendy Kalthoff I loved night.

Eva The Upstairs Room by Johanna Reiss. It's a novel about a Dutch Jewish girl who spends a couple years hiding in an attic room during WWII.

Henry Nasar wrote: "I don't think there are any books like this. Its about a girl writing in the holocaust and manage to survive for a period of time. Anne Frank's diary is an exquisite, inspiring book that makes me w..."

You bring up a good point. Her diary is when she was in hiding. Elie Weisal's Night is from the perspective of a male who is an Auschwitz concentration camp survivor. From that, they both had different opinions.

Molly Dessources Definitley read The Book thief

Cathy There is a book called Yellow Star. My daughter enjoyed the Diary of Anne Frank and was looking for something along the similar lines. She found Yellow Star and loved it. Hope you like it as well!

message 81: by Ciara (last edited Jan 25, 2014 07:00PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ciara A diary by Helene Berr, a young French jewish girl who was in France when the Nazis invaded. She documented all she saw and heard.' The Journal of Helene Berr.

Ashley I didn't read all comments but The Book Thief, Between Shades of Grey and Night are really fantastic.. However if you want like a Jewish/Prisoner view, you won't get that with the book their (still a good read though!)

Jeanne The Journal of Hélène Berr

message 84: by kate (new) - rated it 5 stars

kate In Our Hearts We Were Giants by Yehuda Koren. It is about a family of ten --including seven little people and their time in a concentration camp. Amazing story.

Esther Bradley-detally google memoirs from Holocaust?

Anthony Zepperi I really good book that is similar to this is Night by Elie Weisel

Dennis "Mademoiselle Gigi" is about a Jewish girl and her family who struggled to survive the Nazi occupation of France. They lived in a garden shed from 1940 to 1944.

Fiona Some Holocaust books I enjoyed that are similar to "Diary of Anne Frank" are "Hidden Like Anne Frank" and my all-time favorite "The Book Thief".
"Hidden Like Anne Frank" is more for readers who are 12-15 whereas "The Book Thief" is for readers 13 and up. They both are great reads and if you're looking for one on concentration camps "Rose Under Fire", the companion novel to "Code Name Verity", is excellent. It gives a look at the home front and inside Ravensburk, women's concentration camp.

No, I never came across any book like this one.

Raynebow facing the lion
its about a young girl and her experience with the Holocaust

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, Is she a real girl ?

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

Night by ELi Weisal is a fantastic book. I wouldn't say it is the same. I would say it has a lot of similar themes. A lot more than "A tree grows in Brooklyn " Poverty is different than hiding from the Nazis. No offense.

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

The question was asked. Therefore, I think it is fair for me to say i think this book was so unique that I don't feel that any book is really "like " it. If you want to phrase the question in a different way than maybe I would have a answer for you. " Unless you ask the right questions every answer seems wrong ". I don't what the person who posted this ? was shooting for. No harm intended.

Kukil Kashyap Number the stars?

Patry Salvador If you liked this one, I you would like to read Notes From The Warsaw Ghetto. Notes from the Warsaw Ghetto

April Margot by Jillian Cantor is a fictionalized account of Anne's sister, the quiet one. You might want to check it out. I really enjoyed it.
Margot by Jillian Cantor

Raynebow Jill wrote: "Oh, Is she a real girl ?"

The one in facing the lion is, she survived and wrote about her experience

Shoshi "The boy with the striped Pajamas."
Books like that are hard to come by, since most papers were destroyed.
There is also the book "Young writers of the Holocaust".l
I forgot the name of the author. But it has section from diaries, from letters from children 10 up. Most of them perished. Those are selections found later on from surviving relatives and other sources. The author did a fine job, in writing it all down. Very touching and heart breaking book ! But should be read.
