I loved the book, but hated the film. The book was brilliant and made me cry so much. The film was totally different - left me cold.

I felt the same way. I cried and laughed with Holly & friends. I read it a few years after I became a widow. I wished my deceased husband could have been like Gerry. I could only wish. I had read the book about 3 to 5 years before the movie came out, and I fell in love with the book and have my favorite parts. I saw the movie about a year or so after it came out, and it stunk in my eyes. Instead of keeping it Irish, they had to mix it up and take the charm out of a wonderful book.

Madie I abolutly loved both of them. They both made me cry. I think it is ok they were so different from each other.

Neva I first read the book and some months later watched the movie, I obviously prefer the book! I really enjoyed it and I was really moved by it. I must say I did not like the movie at all, it was sooooo diferent from the book! I couldn't believe it.

message 105: by Sarah (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sarah Blaha i read the book before the movie and i have to say they were really different! But i thought the book was WAY better than the movie.

message 107: by Rachael (new)

Rachael Dewhurst Hi, I read the book and then watched the film and have to say that it is one of the extremely rare times where I thought the film was so much better than the book. I can't put my finger on why I thought this but something about Jodie Picoult's writing style really annoyed me and I struggled to finish reading. The characters in the book annoyed me, again I am not sure why but I think it was down to the fact that she simply displayed the same two, three emotions at tops, all the way through the story. let me clarify, I understand that this is a book and a story line about the death of her husband and how she copes with that and therefore you expect sadness and grief to be at the forefront. However, her emotions seemed to be on a cycle - Sadness, anger, tiny window of hope and happiness and then it began again. I thought the emotions wen't so much deeper in the film and better explored how her emotions effected those around her. This is why I enjoyed the film and became thoroughly bored with the book.

Sorry, if the review was vague due to me being unable to put my finger on the reasons behind me disliking the book so much. Maybe someone shares this view and could give me a hint?

message 108: by Mara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mara Pemberton My feeling has always be that people who've become widowed would understand the book more than the movie.

All widowed people react differently to death. How she reacted maybe was natural for her.

message 109: by Kelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kelly The book is amazing, it had me in tears from start to finish. The movie however has much as I like it; you have to see it has separate from the book because they are nothing alike and the movie totally ruined Daniel's character in it. Plus the movie didn't pull at the heartstrings as much as the book did, well for me anyway.

Anethemba not me

book far better than movie, u wil love i ,

Chelsey The movie is loosely based on the book.
However, I loved them both.

Regina I absolutely LOVE the book. The movie was okay.

Kathy Nicole wrote: "I read the book before I saw the movie, and I have to say that they're almost entirely different. The biggest difference is the location of the book, and the letters that she got. I loved the book ..."

I totally agree. I was excited to see the movie after having read the book, but I hated the movie because it changed an awesome story. I have to say that if I hadn't fell in love with the book before seeing the movie and if I thought of it as a completely different story then I would have liked the movie. The book was so much better though.

message 117: by Becky (new) - rated it 4 stars

Becky Rodriguez I fell in love with the movie version and had watched it repeatedly before getting a copy of the book from my local library. The movie is different as well as it is similar; you have to read the book and watch the movie to know what I mean. It is my opinion that they are both enjoyable medias in their own way.

message 118: by Susan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Susan I read the book first and absolutely loved it. There was laugh out loud moments and moments of tears and sadness.
The movies didn't quite do it for me. It wasn't the same and didn't have the same emotions for me that I had expected.
And as an Irish person, don't even get me started on the Irish accents .... truly awful.

message 119: by Mara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mara Pemberton I have a couple favorite parts. The one Gerry goes to the travel agency. The one where Holly spilled the red wine on her dress and Gerry made the comment about not wearing a white dress. I have some others, I can't remember them.

I'd love if Ms. Aheren would write a sequel and let us know how Holly is doing some years doing some years down the road.

the book was much better .i was caught up in a whirlwind of emotions while reading the book.the movie was ok

message 121: by Puteri (new) - rated it 5 stars

Puteri Zulaikha The book is way better, the movie is not that bad though

message 122: by Becky (new) - rated it 4 stars

Becky Rodriguez I read the book only after falling in love with the movie. Granted, the movie differs a bit from the book; however, I found both medias entertaining in their differences as well as in their similarities.

message 123: by Ashley (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ashley I thought the ending of the book could have been better. It dragged on for so long. And you could definately guess what would happen next. I didn't cry once( thought I would), I finished the book but the author I felt could not grasp the tear jerker writing like other authors are able to do.

I haven't seen the movie but I completely agree that Holly in the book was not a "likeable" character. I'm guessing once I see the movie, I will categorize this book/movie combo with The Vow book/movie, where the movie is way better than the book.

message 125: by Karen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Karen Rodrigues The book was super good! Can't really say the same for the movie.

message 126: by Ananya (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ananya both are good..
I liked the movie cause of Gerard Butler ;)

message 127: by M (new) - rated it 5 stars

M I loved the movie, although I cry at everything except about 15mins of it (basically the Harry Connick Jr scenes which provides the only comic relief).
I LOVED the book. I'm a huge fan of Cecilia Ahern in general because her characters are warm, lovable, flawed and endearing. I found the character's voice to be so winning, and although the book is still sad (of course) it's not quite in such a heartbreaking way. At least I don't sob throughout the entire book like I do the movie ;)

message 128: by Mara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mara Pemberton I found Holly very likable. I find people who have not lost a spouse not liking this book or not liking Holly. Being a widow and the emotions she felt, I was right there with her.

Ellaine P. Made me teary eyed and it feels like my heart's being squeezed.

message 130: by Sakshi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sakshi Agarwal Book is lot more better than the movie........provides a wider canvas and depth of emotions......loved it more while reading.....

message 131: by Mara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mara Pemberton I'd live an update book or novella as to how life is treating Holly & Co.

Marilyn Saw the movie first. Loved it. Bought the book and was surprised the only thing the two had in common was the title. The book is on a whole different playing field than the movie - i.e.: the movie is fun but the book's story is far more superior.

Ipshita I saw the movie first and then read the book 3 years later.

Victoria I read the book before i saw the film. It is safe to say that the book was so much better than the film, don't get me wrong i love Hilary Swank and Gerald Butler, but it just didn't live up to the high expectations that the book had set.

message 135: by Raksha (new) - rated it 4 stars

Raksha Book is way better than movie.
So reading it will be better than watching it.

Annabel Beales I think (in my opinion) if you read the book you picture your own images of what the characters are like. When the movie came out I was disappointed, but I'm sure it's because I'd imagined the characters different to how they were portrayed in the film.

I try not to watch films that are from books that I've read, it's a bit of a let down for me :(

I'm with you on how we perceive characters in books we've read and how they are portrayed on in movies or TV.

Had I not read P.S. I LOVE YOU a few years after I became a widow myself, and understood exactly what Holly felt after Gerry died. I don't think I would have had such a negative reaction to the move.

Annabel Beales I'm sorry x

message 139: by Mara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mara Pemberton It's okay! I just had a string reaction to the book, and it became one of my favorite books.

Annabel Beales I can imagine it brings out all the emotions xxx

message 141: by Sheila (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sheila I agree with you Annabel. I also have certain images to the characters when I read the book.
But I also put myself in their situation. What it would be like if it was me. I really felt more with the characters from the book than the film. I never feel that way watching any film. I guess the books are personal to me.

Samantha Chapman Try When All Else Fails by LJ Burnley, you wont be able to put it down, give it a try you will be glad you did.Cant miss it with the red rose on the cover. When All Else Fails

message 143: by Steffi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Steffi Berlin I read the book first.....and then watched the movie like i guess almost everybody.
I love the book (love all Cecelia books9 .... The movie was not bad but so different that it was a little confusing.

Jane Peskara / Audrey Valentine The book is soooo great i loved it, i was so happy when they made the movie and then? i bought it and watched it on the same day and i was disappointed, its the worst movi based on a book that i have ever seen, not only because i hate hilary swank but everything was different it sucks biiig time!

Suzanne I've never liked the movie, but I really like the book.

message 146: by Lorraine (last edited Dec 01, 2013 10:49AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lorraine Farrow I loved this book. The movie for me was not as good as the book I felt, but ding dong! Gerard Butler! woohoo!

message 147: by Tanya (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tanya Jain This novel is truly amazing same as the movie. i just loved both :)

message 148: by Sohini (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sohini Chatterjee The book is infinitely better than the movie. As is always the case with book lovers!

message 149: by Rose (new) - rated it 3 stars

Rose I agree with Sohini! I just finished the book and I thought it was way better than the movie, but I was kind of let down by the ending of the book. Did anyone else REALLY want her to be with Daniel? I thought it was also out of character for Daniel to suddenly get back with his ex-girlfriend. Anyway, I still liked the book better than the movie and will probably read more by her in the future!

Adriana I read the book first and loved it more than the movie.
