First of all, this falls under the sci-fi genre, not techno-thriller.
Two major differences between sci-fi and techno-thriller genres: (1) Sci-fi can take place in the distant future and/or in an alternate timeline/alternate universe -- techno-thriller must take place in the present, recent past (generally 1914 or later -- because 1914 was the first time modern technology was used on a large scale in warfare), or near future; (2) Sci-fi can make use of unproven scientific theories, or even outright violate the laws of nature -- techno-thriller cannot, but must make do with existing technology (including technology which is currently in development or proof-of-concept), or at least technology which is plausible with today's scientific knowledge.
Thanks for the explanation, but I do not see any contradictions in the plot of the novel correlated with the requirements of the genre.
That's a very interesting point, Dennis. So SF actually CAN "violate the laws of nature"? Because I was under the impression that it could stretch them sort of (like with wormholes) but not violate outright. Or am I wrong?
@Alex: I see at least TWO contradictions between your novel and the requirements of techno-thriller genre: (1) Your novel occurs in the distant future, which is an attribute of sci-fi rather than techno-thriller; and (2) Erasing people's memories is NOT possible with today's level of scientific knowledge.
@Smilla's Sister: There are plenty of examples of outright violations of laws of nature in sci-fi writing -- teleportation, time travel and faster-than-light travel being just the best-known examples.
Thanks! That's true even though I prefer to call them "unproven scientific theories" :-)But you're right of course. I just never looked at it that way.
Well, wormholes fall into the "unproven theories" category -- teleportation and FTL travel, on the other hand, are clear-cut violations of fundamental laws of nature (the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the special theory of relativity, respectively).
I'd love to disagree - would be so nice to think that teleportation and FTL travel are possible. But alas, it doesn't look as if they are, so I have to agree with you :)
